Chapter 4: The Second Agreement

"The money wasn't the real reason they wanted you in that wheelchair.""

Daniel's words hung in the mansion hall.

Marcus stared at his son.

For several seconds, he didn't move. The noise from the party had disappeared completely. Even the guests who had been whispering moments earlier seemed afraid to breathe.

"What did you just say?"" Marcus asked.

Daniel loosened his tie.

"I said there's something else. Something you need to know.""

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

"Daniel, stop.""

He pulled away.

"No.""

She stared at him.

"What do you mean, no?""

"I mean I'm tired of lying.""

Vanessa's expression changed instantly.

She stepped closer and lowered her voice.

"Think very carefully about what you're doing. You have no idea what happens if you tell him everything.""

Marcus watched them.

"Apparently, I'm the only person in this room who doesn't know what happens.""

Malcolm quietly closed the folder.

"Daniel, I suggest you explain the second agreement before this conversation goes any further.""

Daniel nodded.

He looked at his father.

"Do you remember when you were transferred from the hospital to the rehabilitation center?""

"Yes.""

"You were unconscious for almost two days after another complication. The doctors weren't sure how much mobility you'd recover.""

Marcus nodded slowly.

"I remember waking up. I remember you were there.""

"I was.""

"You told me everything would be fine.""

Daniel lowered his eyes.

"I lied.""

The admission struck Marcus harder than he expected.

"Why?""

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"Because Vanessa and Aunt Denise had already started discussing your estate.""

Vanessa laughed sharply.

"That's ridiculous. We were trying to protect the family.""

Daniel turned toward her.

"Stop saying that.""

She pointed a finger at him.

"You were part of it!""

"I know!""

His voice cracked.

For the first time, the guests saw Daniel not as the confident businessman who usually arrived at family gatherings in expensive cars, but as a frightened man who had run out of places to hide.

Marcus pulled out a chair.

"Sit down, Daniel.""

"I'd rather stand.""

"Then stand. But tell me the truth.""

Daniel took a deep breath.

"After your accident, Denise told Vanessa that you had never updated your estate plan. She said that if you remained unable to manage your affairs, the family could petition for a medical determination that would give someone else control.""

Marcus glanced toward Malcolm.

The attorney nodded.

"Such a petition can be filed under specific circumstances, but it requires proper medical evidence and judicial review.""

Daniel continued.

"They found a doctor willing to prepare a report.""

Vanessa immediately interrupted.

"That is not what happened!""

Daniel turned on her.

"You told me the report was already arranged.""

"I said we had spoken to someone!""

"You told me Dad would never regain enough independence to challenge it.""

Marcus slowly looked at his son.

"Who was the doctor?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Dr. Raymond Ellis.""

Malcolm immediately wrote the name down.

Marcus recognized it.

Ellis had been one of the physicians who had evaluated him shortly after the accident.

"That man examined me twice," Marcus said.

Daniel nodded.

"Denise contacted him through a private medical consultancy.""

Denise finally spoke.

"That's enough, Daniel.""

Her voice was no longer dismissive.

It was desperate.

"You have no idea how much work went into keeping this family together.""

Marcus turned toward her.

"Keeping it together?""

"Your father left us with responsibilities. You became obsessed with your businesses. You were always working. Someone had to think about the future.""

"My father left you a house and a trust. I built everything else.""

"And you never understood what it was like to be the one left behind!""

Denise's eyes filled with tears.

For a moment, her anger seemed genuine.

But Marcus wasn't finished.

"You were left behind?""

He leaned forward.

"Do you remember the night of the accident?""

Denise said nothing.

"I was driving home from your house. You called me because your husband had collapsed. I drove through a storm to get there.""

His voice softened.

"I found you sitting on the kitchen floor. You were holding his hand. You couldn't stop crying.""

Denise looked away.

"I remember.""

"I paid for the ambulance. I paid for the hospital. I paid for his treatment. When he died, I paid for the funeral.""

Marcus paused.

"And when I woke up after my own accident, I asked for you.""

Denise's lips trembled.

"I was there.""

"You visited twice.""

"Marcus—"

"Twice in six months.""

The room remained silent.

Marcus looked at his sister with an expression that was more disappointed than angry.

"I never asked you to repay me. I never asked you to spend your life thanking me. I only expected you not to treat me like a problem when I needed help.""

Denise wiped her cheek.

Then she did something unexpected.

She pointed toward Daniel.

"He wanted the money too.""

Daniel flinched.

Marcus turned.

"Is that true?""

Daniel didn't deny it.

"I made mistakes.""

"What kind of mistakes?""

Daniel stared at the floor.

"My company was failing. I had debts. Vanessa said we could use the family assets temporarily, just until things improved.""

"How much did you take?""

"About two hundred thousand.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

He had suspected financial trouble.

He hadn't expected this.

"Your mother and I paid for your education. We helped you start your company. I gave you a place in the family business.""

"I know.""

"You had every opportunity I could give you.""

"I know, Dad.""

"Then why?""

Daniel's eyes filled.

"Because I wanted to live like you without having to work like you.""

Nobody moved.

It was the most honest thing Daniel had said all evening.

Vanessa looked disgusted.

"You're making yourself sound like some helpless victim.""

Daniel turned toward her.

"You were the one who suggested the second agreement.""

She shook her head.

"Don't.""

"You told me Dad's recovery was inconvenient.""

"Daniel!""

"You said the longer he stayed dependent on us, the easier everything would be.""

Marcus gripped the edge of the table.

"Explain the agreement.""

Daniel reached inside his jacket and removed a folded document.

He handed it to Malcolm.

The attorney opened it carefully.

His eyes moved across the pages.

Then he stopped.

"This is a proposed transfer of controlling interest in Reed Holdings.""

Marcus looked up.

"My company?""

Daniel nodded.

"Vanessa wanted to sell the controlling shares to a private investment group.""

"Without my permission?""

"Yes.""

Malcolm turned the document toward Marcus.

There were signatures.

One belonged to Daniel.

Another belonged to Denise.

The third was supposed to be Marcus's.

But the signature had been copied from an old corporate filing.

Marcus stared at it.

"Who organized this?""

Daniel answered quietly.

"Vanessa.""

Vanessa threw her hands up.

"This is unbelievable! I was trying to save the business.""

"By selling it?"" Marcus asked.

"It was struggling!""

"It made more money last year than it had in the previous five years.""

"That's what you think!""

Marcus stared at her.

Then he looked at Malcolm.

"Did you know about this?""

"I discovered the proposed sale during the review. The buyer was scheduled to receive the documents next week.""

Marcus slowly sat back.

"Next week?""

Malcolm nodded.

"There is another complication. The proposed buyer has already paid a deposit into an escrow account.""

Daniel covered his face.

Vanessa's expression turned cold.

"You have no idea what you're doing, Marcus.""

He looked at her.

"Perhaps you should explain it.""

She straightened her purple silk dress.

"You think standing up changes everything? It doesn't. You're still an old man with a damaged family and a company that needs modern leadership.""

Marcus said nothing.

Vanessa continued.

"You've spent your entire life believing money makes people loyal. It doesn't. People stay because they have something to gain.""

"Is that why you stayed?""

She smiled without warmth.

"I stayed because Daniel was worth marrying.""

Daniel stared at her.

"Was I?""

For the first time, Vanessa had no immediate response.

Malcolm placed the agreement back inside the folder.

"There's one more matter. The proposed sale includes a provision that would transfer control of the company's private archives to the buyer.""

Marcus frowned.

"What archives?""

Malcolm looked at him.

"The original Reed Holdings acquisition records. The documents concerning the land purchases made twenty years ago.""

Marcus's expression changed.

"Those records are not part of the sale.""

"According to this agreement, they are.""

Marcus slowly turned toward Daniel.

"Son, do you know why Vanessa wanted those records?""

Daniel swallowed.

"No.""

But Vanessa had already begun moving toward the exit.

Malcolm noticed.

"Vanessa, I wouldn't leave just yet.""

She stopped.

"You're not my attorney.""

"No. But I have something you should see.""

He removed a photograph from the folder.

It showed a man standing outside a private office building.

Marcus recognized him immediately.

The buyer's representative.

And beside that man stood Vanessa.

But there was something else.

A third person.

Someone Marcus had trusted for more than twenty years.

Marcus leaned closer.

Then he whispered a name.

"Robert?""

Malcolm nodded.

"Your former chief financial officer.""

Marcus looked at the photograph again.

Robert Hayes had retired five years earlier.

May you like

He had been Marcus's closest business associate.

And according to the date printed beneath the image, Robert had met Vanessa just three weeks before Marcus's accident.
