Chapter 5: The Man Behind the Mansion
Marcus didn't speak for almost a full minute.
He stared at the photograph in Malcolm's hand.
Robert Hayes.
Twenty-two years of business partnership.
Twenty-two years of shared victories, difficult negotiations, and late-night conversations.
Marcus had trusted Robert with information he had never shared with his own family.
And now his former business partner was standing beside Vanessa in a photograph connected to an attempted takeover.
"When was this taken?"" Marcus asked.
"Three weeks before your accident," Malcolm replied.
"Where?""
"Outside the headquarters of Whitmore Capital.""
Vanessa's face tightened.
"That proves absolutely nothing.""
Malcolm placed the photograph on the table.
"Then perhaps you can explain why Robert Hayes was meeting with a representative of the company attempting to purchase Reed Holdings.""
Vanessa shrugged.
"Businesspeople meet. That's what they do.""
"Of course.""
Malcolm removed another document.
"But the meeting wasn't recorded as a business consultation. It was billed as a private acquisition-planning session.""
Marcus slowly turned toward Vanessa.
"How long have you known Robert?""
"Not long.""
"How long?""
She glanced at Daniel.
"About a year.""
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
"A year?""
Daniel looked at her.
"You told me you met him through a charity event.""
Vanessa said nothing.
Malcolm opened his folder.
"Robert Hayes was not simply advising the buyer. He was providing internal financial projections and information about the company's ownership structure.""
Marcus shook his head.
"Robert retired. He has no authority to share confidential company information.""
"That is correct," Malcolm answered.
Denise suddenly sat down.
Her beige-gold dress rustled against the chair.
"I don't understand why we're still talking about this. Robert was always ambitious. Marcus, you know that.""
Marcus looked at her.
"Do you?""
Denise avoided his eyes.
Malcolm placed a second photograph beside the first.
This one showed Denise entering the same office building.
Marcus stared at it.
"Denise?""
She immediately stood.
"That photograph is misleading.""
"When did you meet Robert?""
"I don't remember.""
"Try.""
She pressed her lips together.
"Perhaps six months ago.""
"Six months?""
"Yes.""
Marcus looked at Malcolm.
The attorney nodded.
"That meeting also appears in the review.""
Denise's voice rose.
"Robert said he could help us protect the family.""
Marcus almost laughed.
"Protect us from what?""
"From losing everything.""
Marcus looked around the mansion.
"Everything?""
He gestured toward the room.
"Do you know how much of this house I have already placed beyond the reach of ordinary creditors? Do you know how much money I set aside for every member of this family?""
Denise's face changed.
"What are you talking about?""
Marcus turned toward Malcolm.
"Show her.""
The attorney removed a separate folder.
"Three years ago, before the accident, Marcus established several family trusts. The documents were designed to protect the family's long-term interests.""
Denise stared.
"I never heard about that.""
"You weren't supposed to manage them," Marcus said.
Malcolm continued.
"Daniel was named as a beneficiary. Denise was also included. Vanessa was not a direct beneficiary, but certain provisions would have provided for her through Daniel.""
Vanessa gave a bitter laugh.
"How generous.""
Marcus looked at her.
"You were going to inherit more than you could have earned in twenty lifetimes.""
"I didn't marry Daniel for money.""
Marcus looked at the documents.
"Then why did you spend so much time trying to get mine?""
She said nothing.
Malcolm continued.
"Under the original trust arrangement, the beneficiaries were protected. However, any attempted unauthorized transfer of company assets would trigger a review and temporarily suspend certain distributions.""
Daniel looked up.
"So the trusts are still there?""
"Yes.""
"Then why did Vanessa say they were empty?""
Marcus turned slowly.
"What?""
Daniel looked toward his wife.
"She told me there was nothing left in the trusts. She said the company was heavily leveraged and that we had to act before the banks took control.""
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
"Daniel, you are making things worse.""
"How much did you tell me?""
"Enough to keep you from panicking.""
"You told me Dad had lost almost everything!""
"I was trying to make you understand the situation.""
Marcus leaned forward.
"Who told you the trusts were empty?""
Vanessa looked at Malcolm.
Then at Marcus.
Finally, she answered.
"Robert.""
Marcus nodded slowly.
There it was.
The name kept appearing.
Robert Hayes had been feeding them information.
But why?
"What did Robert want?"" Marcus asked.
Denise looked down.
Daniel answered.
"Control.""
Marcus waited.
Daniel continued.
"He said the company had too much money tied up in property and old investments. He wanted to sell certain divisions and reorganize everything.""
"That isn't unusual.""
"He also said the old land acquisitions were worth far more than the public records showed.""
Marcus looked at Malcolm.
The attorney nodded.
"That is true.""
Marcus frowned.
"Explain.""
Malcolm placed a map on the table.
It showed several parcels of land across Georgia.
Marcus recognized them.
He had purchased most of the properties when the surrounding areas were undeveloped.
At the time, they had been inexpensive.
He had held onto them for decades.
"What about them?""
Malcolm pointed to a section near the interstate.
"Several of these properties are now adjacent to a major infrastructure development.""
Marcus stared.
"How major?""
"Large enough that the combined land value has increased substantially.""
Vanessa's expression changed.
Daniel looked at the map.
"I didn't know about this.""
"Because you never asked," Marcus replied.
Malcolm continued.
"Robert's proposed buyer has been negotiating with developers who need access to those parcels.""
Marcus slowly understood.
The company wasn't simply valuable because of its current operations.
Its land holdings were potentially worth several times what anyone outside the original board knew.
And the old acquisition records contained information about easements, mineral rights, and development restrictions.
Information that could make a buyer enormously wealthy.
"Robert wanted the archives," Marcus said.
"Yes," Malcolm replied.
"And he needed control of the company to obtain them.""
"Yes.""
Marcus turned toward Vanessa.
"Did you know?""
She remained silent.
"Did you know what was in those files?""
Vanessa lifted her chin.
"I knew they were valuable.""
"How?""
"Robert explained it.""
Marcus stared at her.
Then he looked at Denise.
"Did he explain it to you too?""
Denise began crying.
"I didn't know it would go this far.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
"That's what everybody says when they finally get caught.""
Denise approached him.
"Marcus, please. I made a terrible mistake.""
"You signed the agreement.""
"I thought we could fix it.""
"You authorized transfers.""
"I thought the money would be replaced.""
"You discussed having me declared mentally incapacitated.""
Denise covered her mouth.
"I never wanted you hurt.""
Marcus looked at her.
"Then why did you allow me to be treated like I was already gone?""
She couldn't answer.
Vanessa stepped forward.
"Enough of this. Denise, stop crying. It isn't helping.""
Marcus turned toward her.
"Interesting. You can humiliate me in front of forty people, but you can't tolerate watching somebody else experience embarrassment.""
Vanessa glared.
"You're enjoying this.""
"No.""
He stood.
"I'm finally understanding it.""
He walked toward the fireplace and looked at the family photographs arranged along the mantel.
One showed him holding Daniel as a baby.
Another showed Denise standing beside their father.
A third showed Marcus and Robert shaking hands at the opening of their first corporate office.
He touched the frame.
"Robert was there when I started this company with three employees and one rented office.""
Malcolm approached him.
"I know.""
"He was there when we almost lost everything in 2008.""
"I remember.""
"He was the first person I called when Daniel was born.""
Marcus slowly lowered his hand.
"And he was meeting my daughter-in-law three weeks before I crashed.""
Malcolm didn't respond.
The silence was answer enough.
Then a phone rang.
It came from Malcolm's briefcase.
He checked the screen.
His expression changed.
"That's interesting.""
Marcus turned.
"What?""
"Robert just sent me a message.""
Malcolm opened it.
The message contained only one sentence.
*Tell Marcus to stop looking into the land records. He doesn't know what he's about to uncover.*
Marcus read it twice.
Then he looked toward Vanessa.
She had gone completely still.
"Did you know Robert would contact Malcolm?"" he asked.
"No.""
"Then why are you frightened?""
She looked away.
Malcolm typed a response.
Before he could send it, another message arrived.
This time, it contained an attachment.
A photograph.
Marcus leaned over Malcolm's shoulder.
The photograph showed an old construction site, a rusted metal gate, and a small concrete building.
Marcus recognized the location immediately.
It was a property he had purchased in 1999.
A property that had been excluded from the public company records.
A property that, according to the original acquisition documents, had never been developed.
But the photograph showed something different.
A fresh excavation.
A locked steel container.
And a man standing beside it.
Marcus stared at the image.
"That's impossible.""
Malcolm looked at him.
"What is it?""
Marcus's voice dropped.
"Something was buried there.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"What?""
Marcus turned.
"The original deed.""
He looked at Malcolm.
"And if Robert found it, he knows the truth about who really owns that land.""
Then the mansion's front door opened again.
A security guard rushed inside.
"Mr. Reed, I'm sorry to interrupt.""
Marcus turned.
"What happened?""
The guard swallowed.
"There's a man outside asking to see you.""
"Who?""
The guard hesitated.
May you like
Then answered.
"Mr. Robert Hayes.""
