Chapter 8: The Secret in the Original Will

Marcus looked at Malcolm.

"You were involved in my father's estate?""

Malcolm nodded.

"Not as his primary attorney. I was a junior associate at the firm handling certain confidential matters.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I was instructed not to disclose the details until Olivia appeared and could establish her identity.""

Olivia looked between them.

"My grandfather knew I might come here?""

Malcolm nodded.

"He anticipated that someone might attempt to interfere with your inheritance.""

Vanessa laughed.

"Convenient story.""

Malcolm ignored her.

He placed his briefcase on the table and removed a thick envelope.

The paper was yellowed at the edges.

A red wax seal remained intact.

Marcus recognized the handwriting immediately.

His father's.

"That's the original?"" he whispered.

Malcolm nodded.

"Your father left specific instructions concerning this document.""

Marcus reached toward it.

Malcolm gently stopped him.

"Before I open it, I need to confirm something.""

He turned toward Olivia.

"Do you have identification and the original birth certificate?""

Olivia nodded.

She opened her handbag and produced a small folder.

Malcolm reviewed the documents.

Then he compared them with a copy of the old trust record.

"Thank you.""

He looked at Marcus.

"Her identity is consistent with the original estate records.""

Denise approached.

"Malcolm, please. Can't we discuss this without opening everything in front of strangers?""

Olivia looked at her mother.

"I'm not a stranger.""

Denise lowered her head.

Malcolm broke the seal.

Inside were several pages of handwritten instructions and a formal legal document.

He read silently for nearly a minute.

Then he placed his glasses on the table.

"Your father established two separate trusts.""

Marcus leaned forward.

"Two?""

"Yes. The first was created to provide for Olivia. The second was designed to protect a portion of the family property until she reached adulthood.""

Marcus looked at Olivia.

"How much property?""

Malcolm turned to the second page.

"Twenty-three acres, including the industrial site mentioned earlier.""

Marcus frowned.

"Only twenty-three?""

Malcolm nodded.

"But the land is not the most valuable part.""

He turned the page.

"The trust also holds the mineral rights, development easements, and controlling interests in a private company that was established to manage the property.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"What company?""

Malcolm answered.

"Reed Heritage Holdings.""

Marcus stared.

He had never heard the name.

"Who owns it?""

Malcolm looked at Olivia.

"According to the original trust, Olivia is its sole beneficiary.""

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

"That's impossible. The company is worth millions.""

"More than that," Malcolm replied.

He placed a valuation report on the table.

The figure at the bottom was substantial.

The room erupted in whispers.

Denise sat down.

Daniel looked stunned.

Vanessa stared at the document.

"How much?""

Malcolm repeated the valuation.

Vanessa slowly shook her head.

"That can't be right.""

Olivia looked at the report.

Then at Marcus.

"I don't understand. Why would my grandfather leave all this to me?""

Marcus looked at her.

"Because he loved you.""

Malcolm continued.

"Your grandfather also included a condition.""

Marcus frowned.

"What condition?""

"Olivia must be given the opportunity to decide whether she wants to maintain the property, sell it, or transfer management to another qualified trustee. Nobody else may make that decision on her behalf.""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"So she can sell it?""

"Yes.""

"And nobody can stop her?""

"Not if the trust remains valid.""

Olivia stared at the documents.

"I don't want to sell anything.""

Marcus smiled.

"You don't have to decide tonight.""

She nodded.

Then Malcolm turned another page.

His expression became more serious.

"There is an additional clause.""

Marcus leaned forward.

"What?""

"The trust was designed to activate a separate investigation if anyone attempted to obtain its assets through fraud, coercion, or misrepresentation.""

Vanessa's face changed.

"What does that mean?""

Malcolm looked directly at her.

"It means your communications with Olivia, the proposed release agreement, and the attempted transfer of company records are now relevant to a formal legal review.""

Vanessa looked toward Daniel.

"Say something!""

Daniel remained silent.

She stepped closer.

"Daniel!""

He looked at her.

"What do you want me to say?""

"Tell them this was your idea!""

Daniel shook his head.

"No.""

Vanessa stared.

"You signed the agreement!""

"I did.""

"You wanted the company!""

"I did.""

"Then don't act innocent!""

Daniel lowered his eyes.

"I'm not innocent.""

He looked toward Marcus.

"But I'm done helping you lie.""

Vanessa slapped him.

The sound echoed through the hall.

Several guests gasped.

Daniel touched his cheek.

He didn't retaliate.

He simply stepped away from her.

Marcus watched the exchange without speaking.

Then Malcolm removed another sheet.

"This is an authorization your father left concerning the family business.""

Marcus looked at it.

"What does it say?""

Malcolm read aloud.

"In the event that Marcus Reed is unable or unwilling to continue managing the family's primary holdings, the independent trustees may appoint a temporary administrator. However, no appointment may be made without the approval of the designated beneficiary of the heritage trust.""

Daniel looked confused.

"Meaning?""

Malcolm answered.

"Olivia has the right to approve or reject the appointment of anyone who attempts to take control of certain shared assets.""

Marcus turned toward Olivia.

"You have no obligation to get involved in our business.""

She nodded.

"I understand.""

"But your grandfather clearly wanted you to have a voice.""

Olivia looked down at the letter.

"He wanted me to have a choice.""

"Exactly.""

Denise finally approached her daughter.

"Olivia, sweetheart.""

Olivia didn't move.

Denise reached for her hand.

Olivia pulled away.

"Don't call me that.""

Denise began crying.

"I know I made mistakes.""

Olivia's expression remained calm.

"You made one mistake when you left me.""

Denise nodded.

"You made another when you ignored my letters.""

"I was afraid.""

"And another when you let people tell me you were dead.""

Denise covered her mouth.

Olivia took a breath.

"I spent nineteen years believing I wasn't wanted. Do you understand what that does to a child?""

Denise whispered, "I'm sorry.""

Olivia looked at her.

"I don't know what to do with your apology.""

Marcus stepped closer.

"You don't have to do anything with it tonight.""

Olivia nodded.

Malcolm continued reviewing the documents.

Then he stopped at a page marked with a handwritten note.

His expression changed.

"Marcus.""

"What?""

"I think we need to discuss the accident.""

Marcus frowned.

"What about it?""

Malcolm turned the page.

"Your father's original instructions included a warning about the industrial site. Specifically, he instructed the trustees to investigate any attempt to access the underground storage facility.""

Marcus remembered the photograph Robert had shown him.

The excavation.

The steel container.

The disturbed ground.

"What does that have to do with my accident?""

Malcolm hesitated.

"Your vehicle was involved in a collision near the same property.""

Marcus slowly stood.

"I was driving home from Denise's house.""

"Yes.""

"But the accident occurred several miles away.""

Malcolm nodded.

"According to the police report, the road was wet, and your vehicle lost traction.""

"That's what I was told.""

Malcolm removed a final document.

"This is a supplemental insurance investigation. It was never included in the original report.""

Marcus read the first paragraph.

Then his eyes narrowed.

"What is this?""

"An inspection of your vehicle after the accident.""

Marcus looked at the date.

It was two days after the crash.

The report mentioned damage to the braking system.

Not consistent with ordinary wear.

He looked at Malcolm.

"Are you saying my brakes were tampered with?""

"I'm saying the report raises questions that were never resolved.""

Vanessa immediately spoke.

"That's ridiculous.""

Marcus turned.

"Nobody asked you.""

She folded her arms.

"You're going to accuse everybody of trying to kill you now?""

Malcolm's voice remained measured.

"We're not making accusations. We're reviewing evidence.""

Robert finally spoke.

"The accident had nothing to do with me.""

Marcus turned toward him.

"Nobody mentioned your name.""

Robert looked uncomfortable.

"Because I know what you're thinking.""

Marcus studied him.

Then he asked quietly:

"Why were you at the property the morning after my accident?""

Robert froze.

The room went silent.

Malcolm looked up sharply.

Daniel turned toward the former chief financial officer.

"What?""

Robert adjusted his jacket.

"I was checking on the site.""

"At six in the morning?"" Marcus asked.

Robert said nothing.

Marcus stepped closer.

"You told me you were in Florida.""

Robert swallowed.

"Plans changed.""

Malcolm opened another folder.

"Actually, we have a security record.""

Robert's face tightened.

"The property gate recorded your vehicle entering at 6:14 a.m. the morning after the crash.""

Marcus stared at him.

"Why?""

Robert looked toward Vanessa.

Then Denise.

Neither woman spoke.

Finally, Robert sat down.

"Because I was looking for something.""

"What?""

"The original deed.""

Marcus frowned.

"Why?""

Robert's eyes dropped.

"Because your father left another document in that container.""

Malcolm looked sharply at him.

"What document?""

Robert took a long breath.

"The original instructions concerning the accident.""

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

"What accident?""

Robert looked directly at him.

"The accident that happened to your father.""

Marcus blinked.

"My father died of a heart attack.""

Robert shook his head.

"That's what the family was told.""

Evelyn suddenly grabbed the edge of the table.

"Robert, don't.""

Marcus turned toward his mother.

"Mother?""

Evelyn's eyes filled.

Robert continued.

"Your father discovered someone was stealing from the family trust. He confronted that person. Two days later, his car went off the road.""

Marcus stared.

"Who?""

Robert didn't answer immediately.

Then he looked toward Denise.

She began shaking her head.

"Stop.""

Robert's voice dropped.

"The person who arranged the meeting with your father that night was...""

Before he could finish, the lights in the mansion flickered.

Then went out.

A woman screamed.

May you like

The emergency lights came on several seconds later.

And when Marcus turned toward the table, the original will was gone.
