Chapter 9: The Name Written in the Darkness
"Nobody move!""
Malcolm's voice cut through the darkness.
The emergency lights illuminated the mansion in a dim red glow.
Guests stumbled away from the tables.
Someone knocked over a champagne glass.
The security guard rushed toward the entrance.
Marcus immediately looked at the table.
The original will had disappeared.
So had the old handwritten letter.
"Where is it?"" he demanded.
Malcolm searched the floor.
"It was here.""
"Who touched it?""
Nobody answered.
Vanessa stood beside Daniel.
Denise was near the staircase.
Robert remained seated, his briefcase open.
Olivia stood near Evelyn.
Marcus looked at the security guard.
"Lock the doors.""
The guard nodded and hurried away.
Malcolm turned toward the guests.
"Nobody leaves until we establish what happened.""
Vanessa laughed.
"You're kidding.""
Malcolm looked at her.
"Do I sound amused?""
She folded her arms.
"This is a private family matter. You cannot detain everyone.""
"Nobody is being detained. But the document is missing, and everyone here witnessed where it was placed.""
Daniel looked toward his wife.
"Vanessa, did you take it?""
She stared at him.
"Are you insane?""
"Answer me.""
"No!""
Marcus stepped between them.
"Enough.""
He looked at Robert.
"Did you see anyone near the table?""
Robert shook his head.
"No.""
Marcus studied him.
"You're not a very convincing liar tonight.""
Robert looked away.
Malcolm bent down and picked up a small object near the table leg.
A silver cuff link.
He held it under the emergency light.
"Does this belong to anyone?""
Robert glanced down.
His expression changed.
Marcus noticed.
"Robert?""
The former business partner reached toward his sleeve.
One cuff link was missing.
Marcus stared at him.
"Why?""
Robert swallowed.
"It must have fallen.""
Malcolm placed the cuff link in a small evidence envelope.
"Then we will document it.""
Vanessa suddenly moved toward the staircase.
Marcus turned.
"Where are you going?""
"To the bathroom.""
"Wait.""
She stopped.
"Now what?""
Marcus looked at the security guard.
"Please accompany her.""
Vanessa's expression exploded.
"You cannot treat me like a criminal!""
Marcus's voice remained calm.
"Then stop behaving like someone who has something to hide.""
The guard stepped forward.
Vanessa glared at Marcus but didn't move again.
Meanwhile, Olivia approached the table.
"Marcus?""
He turned.
"Yes?""
"I think I know where the letter is.""
Malcolm looked up.
"What do you mean?""
Olivia opened her handbag.
She removed a small envelope.
It was not the original will.
It was another letter.
"My grandfather gave this to the attorney who handled my mother's adoption records. He told her to give it to me if I ever found the family.""
Marcus looked at the envelope.
"Why didn't you show us earlier?""
"I didn't know what it was.""
She turned it over.
There was a handwritten note.
For the day when the truth becomes too dangerous to keep hidden.
Marcus looked toward Malcolm.
"Open it.""
Malcolm carefully removed the letter.
Inside was a short message.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Marcus, if you are reading this, someone has already attempted to take what belongs to Olivia. Do not trust the person who tells you your father's death was an accident.
Marcus felt his chest tighten.
He read the sentence again.
Then he looked at Evelyn.
His mother was crying silently.
"Mother?""
She shook her head.
"I didn't know.""
Marcus held up the letter.
"Did you know your husband was afraid someone would hurt him?""
Evelyn nodded slowly.
"He told me someone had been following him.""
"Who?""
"I never knew.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
She covered her mouth.
"Because I thought if I kept quiet, I could protect you.""
Marcus looked at her.
"From the truth?""
Evelyn nodded.
Daniel approached.
"Dad, we need to call the police.""
Malcolm agreed.
"Yes. Given the missing document and the new information, I will contact the appropriate authorities.""
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
"No!""
Everyone turned.
She realized what she had said.
Daniel stared.
"Why are you saying no?""
Vanessa looked toward Robert.
"Because this is getting out of control.""
Robert stood.
"She's right.""
Marcus turned.
"Sit down, Robert.""
"I've been patient with you for years.""
"Then you can be patient for another five minutes.""
Robert slammed his hand against the table.
"Your father was going to destroy everything!""
Evelyn gasped.
Marcus went completely still.
"What?""
Robert looked around.
He seemed to realize he had revealed more than he intended.
Marcus stepped closer.
"Explain that.""
Robert rubbed his face.
"Your father discovered the company was being used to hide assets. He wanted to expose everything.""
"Whose assets?""
Robert looked at Denise.
"Your sister's.""
Denise began crying.
Marcus turned.
"What did you do?""
She shook her head.
"Robert is twisting the story.""
Robert laughed bitterly.
"Am I?""
He reached into his jacket and removed a folded piece of paper.
"Here. Look.""
He handed it to Malcolm.
The document was a financial ledger from nearly two decades earlier.
Malcolm scanned it.
Then looked at Marcus.
"These are transfers from the original family trust.""
Marcus frowned.
"How much?""
Malcolm read the figures.
The total was substantial.
Marcus looked toward Denise.
"Did you take that money?""
Denise shook her head.
"Not for myself.""
"Then where did it go?""
She hesitated.
Robert answered.
"To the man who fathered Olivia.""
Olivia stared at him.
"What?""
Denise looked at her daughter.
"Please, sweetheart.""
Olivia stepped backward.
"Who was my father?""
Denise began crying harder.
"He was a good man.""
"Then why did you hide me?""
Denise covered her face.
Robert interrupted.
"Because your grandfather didn't approve of him.""
Marcus turned.
"That still doesn't explain the money.""
Robert opened another document.
"Your father discovered Denise had been secretly sending money to her former partner. He believed the money was being used to support the man and the child.""
Marcus looked at Denise.
"Was that true?""
She nodded.
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because I loved him.""
"Then why did you let everyone believe Olivia was dead?""
Denise looked at her daughter.
"Because he disappeared.""
Olivia's face changed.
"Who?""
Denise whispered a name.
"James Carter.""
Olivia stared.
She had heard that name before.
A name written on the back of the only childhood photograph she had kept.
"James Carter was my father?""
Denise nodded.
Olivia's eyes filled.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I thought he had abandoned us.""
Robert suddenly laughed.
"That's what you were told.""
Denise turned sharply.
"What are you talking about?""
Robert looked at Marcus.
"James didn't abandon Denise. He was trying to expose the theft from the family trust.""
Marcus's jaw tightened.
"Was he killed?""
Robert hesitated.
Then answered.
"He disappeared after meeting your father.""
Olivia covered her mouth.
Marcus stared at Robert.
"Did my father know what happened to him?""
Robert nodded.
"Yes.""
Evelyn began sobbing.
"Please, Robert. Don't.""
Marcus turned toward his mother.
"What else are you hiding?""
She looked at him.
Then at Olivia.
Finally, she spoke.
"Your father didn't die from a heart attack.""
The room became silent.
Marcus felt his legs weaken.
He gripped the back of a chair.
"What?""
Evelyn wiped her face.
"He was poisoned.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"What?""
Evelyn nodded.
"The doctors said his heart had stopped. But your father knew something was wrong before he died.""
Marcus stared at her.
"How do you know?""
"Because he told me.""
"Who did it?""
Evelyn closed her eyes.
"I never knew for certain.""
Robert interrupted.
"She knows.""
Evelyn turned toward him.
"Stop.""
Robert's voice became louder.
"Tell him!""
Denise began backing toward the staircase.
Marcus noticed.
"Denise?""
She stopped.
He looked at her for a long moment.
Then asked:
"Did you know my father was poisoned?""
Denise began shaking.
"No.""
Robert laughed.
"She arranged the meeting.""
Denise shouted.
"Because you told me he wanted to make peace!""
Robert stared at her.
"You knew what he was going to ask you to sign.""
"I didn't know he would die!""
Marcus stepped forward.
"Enough!""
His voice echoed through the mansion.
He looked at Robert.
"Did you poison my father?""
Robert's face became expressionless.
Then he gave a small nod.
"Yes.""
A woman screamed.
Daniel rushed toward Marcus.
Malcolm immediately took out his phone.
Robert continued.
"Your father had discovered the entire operation. He was going to expose Denise, me, and the people financing the land acquisition. I couldn't let him destroy everything.""
Marcus stared at him.
"You killed my father.""
Robert nodded.
"And I made sure everyone believed it was natural.""
Marcus's hands trembled.
For seventeen years, he had lived with the belief that his father had died peacefully.
For seventeen years, he had visited a grave and spoken to a man who had been murdered by someone he considered family.
Then Robert said something even worse.
"Your accident was supposed to finish what your father started.""
Marcus went cold.
"What?""
Robert looked toward Vanessa.
She immediately shook her head.
"Don't.""
Robert ignored her.
"Vanessa arranged the vehicle inspection. Denise provided the schedule. Daniel was supposed to keep the family occupied while the company was transferred.""
Daniel stepped backward.
"No.""
Robert continued.
"The brakes were supposed to fail on a quiet stretch of road. You were supposed to die before you could challenge the sale.""
Marcus stared at his son.
Daniel looked horrified.
"I didn't know they were going to kill you.""
Vanessa shouted.
"Robert, shut up!""
Malcolm stepped forward.
"Nobody move.""
But Robert suddenly reached into his briefcase.
He pulled out a small metal device.
The security guard rushed toward him.
Robert raised his hand.
"Stay back!""
The guests screamed.
Marcus stood between Robert and Olivia.
Then the front doors opened.
Two uniformed officers entered.
Behind them stood a detective holding a photograph.
"Robert Hayes," she announced, "we need you to come with us.""
Robert's face changed.
The detective continued.
"We have a warrant connected to the death of Thomas Reed and the attempted murder of Marcus Reed.""
Robert looked toward the exit.
Then toward Vanessa.
Then Denise.
He realized there was nowhere to go.
The officers approached.
But before they could take him away, Robert turned toward Marcus.
"There's one thing you still don't understand.""
Marcus stared.
"What?""
Robert smiled bitterly.
"Your father didn't leave everything to Olivia because he loved her more than you.""
Marcus said nothing.
"He left it to her because he knew she would eventually discover what happened to her real father.""
Olivia stepped forward.
"What happened to my father?""
Robert looked at her.
Then he answered.
"James Carter is alive.""
The entire room froze.
Olivia's eyes widened.
"Where?""
Robert glanced toward the detective.
But the detective had already opened her folder.
She looked at Marcus.
"Mr. Reed, there's another person waiting outside.""
Marcus felt his heartbeat quicken.
"Who?""
The detective looked toward Olivia.
"Someone who has been searching for this family for nineteen years.""
Olivia began to cry.
Then the front doors opened again.
A man stood in the doorway.
Older.
Gray at the temples.
One hand resting on a walking cane.
He looked at Denise.
Then at Olivia.
And finally at Marcus.
"Hello, sweetheart," he whispered.
Olivia took one step forward.
"Dad?""
The man nodded.
And as the officers led Robert away, the detective handed Malcolm a final document.
It contained a statement that would change the entire case.
The person who had arranged Marcus's accident wasn't Robert.
It was someone who had been standing in that mansion all evening.
May you like
Someone who had just heard the truth.
Someone who was now trying to escape through the back entrance.
