Chapter 5: The Friend Who Held the Camera
Daniel watched the longer video three times.
The first time, he was too shocked to follow everything.
The second time, he listened for the voice behind the camera.
The third time, he noticed the reflection in the glass door behind the bench.
A man stood near the stairwell, holding a phone horizontally. He wore a black baseball cap and a white T-shirt. His face was partially obscured by the glare, but the angle of his shoulders and the silver watch on his wrist were familiar.
Daniel recognized the watch first.
Then the voice.
It was Devin, one of the part-time employees at the shipping shop.
Devin had been working there for six months. He was twenty-four, easygoing, and always ready with a joke. He and Daniel weren't especially close, but they shared lunch breaks and occasionally played basketball with coworkers.
That morning, Devin had stood beside Alicia at the counter and asked Daniel if he was okay.
He had looked genuinely concerned.
Now Daniel wondered whether the concern had been real or simply curiosity dressed up as kindness.
He replayed the video.
Marcus offered the cigarette.
Daniel refused.
Terrence mocked him.
Daniel refused again.
The camera shifted as Devin moved closer.
"Keep filming," Devin said quietly.
"Let's see how long it takes before he snaps.""
Daniel felt his stomach turn.
The video continued through the confrontation. It captured the repeated offers, the dismissive comments, and Daniel stepping backward.
Then came the slap.
The camera shook slightly, but it never stopped recording.
Afterward, the clip caught Daniel apologizing for hitting Terrence and admitting he had lost control. That portion was absent from the shorter video Marcus had shared.
The longer recording didn't excuse the slap.
But it showed what had happened before and after it.
It showed a person being pushed, a person losing control, and a person immediately acknowledging that he had done something wrong.
It showed a much more complicated truth.
Daniel sent Alicia a message.
*Daniel:* Are you sure Devin recorded this?
Her reply came quickly.
*Alicia:* I recognized his voice too. He sent it to me last night and said he wanted me to see the full context. I don't know why he didn't share it with everyone.
Daniel stared at the message.
*Daniel:* Did he say anything else?
A pause followed.
Then Alicia replied.
*Alicia:* He said Marcus asked him to cut it down to the part where you hit Terrence.
Daniel sat down on a low stool.
For several seconds, he couldn't think of anything to type.
Marcus had not simply shared an incomplete video.
He had apparently asked someone to remove the moments that complicated the story.
Daniel called Alicia.
She answered immediately.
"Hey," she said.
"Are you all right?""
"No.""
There was a pause.
"Okay," she replied.
"What do you need?""
"Did Devin tell you why he recorded it?""
"No. He said he was nearby and thought something might happen.""
Daniel looked at the phone.
"He knew something was going to happen?""
"That's how it sounded.""
"Did you ask him?""
"I did. He changed the subject.""
Daniel pressed his fingertips against his forehead.
"Why would he give you the full video and let Marcus share the short one?""
"I don't know, Daniel. Maybe he felt guilty.""
"Or maybe he wanted to see what would happen.""
Alicia didn't answer immediately.
Finally, she said, "I think you should talk to him before you decide what kind of person he is.""
Daniel knew she was right.
He also knew he didn't want to hear another explanation from someone who had already decided what the truth should look like.
After work, he went straight to the apartment complex.
He found Marcus alone on the bench, scrolling through his phone.
The cigarette from the previous afternoon was nowhere in sight.
Marcus looked up when Daniel approached.
"What now?""
Daniel held out his phone.
"Did you ask Devin to cut the video?""
Marcus's expression changed.
Only slightly.
But Daniel saw it.
"What are you talking about?""
"This video."" Daniel played the longer recording.
"Did you ask him to cut it down to the slap?""
Marcus looked at the screen, then away.
"I didn't edit anything.""
"That's not what I asked.""
Marcus stood.
"Why are you coming at me like this?""
"Because you shared a video that made me look like I attacked somebody for no reason. Then I found out you had access to a longer version.""
Marcus folded his arms.
"You did attack him.""
"I admitted that.""
"Then what's the problem?""
"The problem is that you left out everything that happened before it.""
Marcus shook his head.
"Nobody forced you to slap him, Daniel.""
"I never said anybody did.""
"Then why are you acting like you need the whole world to understand?""
Daniel stared at him.
"Because you're showing the world half a story.""
Marcus looked toward the parking lot.
For a moment, Daniel thought he might finally admit what had happened.
Instead, Marcus said, "Devin recorded it. That's on him.""
"And who asked him to cut it?""
Marcus said nothing.
Daniel stepped closer, then stopped himself before the distance became confrontational.
"Marcus. Did you ask him?""
Marcus rubbed his jaw.
"I told him to send me the clip.""
"Why?""
"Because I wanted proof of what happened.""
"Then why not share the whole thing?""
Marcus's face hardened.
"Because I was angry.""
The admission hung between them.
Daniel waited for more.
Marcus looked down at the pavement.
"Terrence was my friend. He'd just been hit. I wanted people to know what you did.""
"And what about what happened before?""
"I wasn't thinking about that.""
Daniel searched his face.
"You're telling me you didn't think about it?""
Marcus lifted his eyes.
"What do you want me to say? That I wanted everybody to think you were a monster? I didn't sit there planning some campaign against you.""
"But you knew the video didn't show the whole story.""
Marcus looked away again.
"Yes.""
The answer was quiet.
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
For all his anger, he had wanted Marcus to deny it. He had wanted a misunderstanding, a careless mistake, something that could be repaired with an honest conversation.
Instead, Marcus had knowingly shared an incomplete recording because he was angry.
"Did you know Devin was recording before the slap?"" Daniel asked.
Marcus hesitated.
"Yes.""
Daniel stared at him.
"How long?""
"I don't know.""
"Marcus.""
"A few minutes, maybe.""
"Did you know he was trying to get me to snap?""
Marcus's silence answered before his words did.
"Devin said you were always serious about everything," Marcus finally replied.
"He thought it would be funny if you got mad.""
Daniel felt a strange coldness settle over him.
"Funny?""
"Nothing was supposed to happen.""
"You kept asking me to smoke.""
"I was joking.""
"Terrence kept insulting me.""
"He jokes like that with everybody.""
"And Devin was filming.""
Marcus rubbed both hands over his face.
"Look, I know how it sounds.""
"Then say it.""
Marcus lowered his hands.
"I should have stopped it.""
Daniel waited.
"And I shouldn't have shared that clip without the rest.""
The apology sounded sincere enough to hurt.
But it came after the damage had already begun.
"Why didn't you tell me this yesterday?"" Daniel asked.
Marcus looked at the bench.
"Because I thought you'd just use it to blame us.""
Daniel shook his head.
"I didn't need a video to know what happened.""
"I know.""
"No, I don't think you do. I came to you because I thought you were my friend. You could have told me Devin recorded it.
You could have shown me the whole thing. Instead, you let me walk around thinking everybody had seen me lose control and nothing else.""
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
"You think this is easy for me?""
Daniel looked at him in disbelief.
"How is this hard for you?""
"Because Terrence is furious. People are asking me why I let you get away with hitting him. Now you're telling me I'm a liar.""
"I'm asking you to take responsibility.""
Marcus laughed bitterly.
"Same thing, apparently.""
Daniel felt the conversation slipping away again.
He stepped back.
"I can't do this right now.""
Marcus followed him with his eyes.
"You're just going to leave?""
"Yes.""
"After everything?""
Daniel stopped.
He had heard those words before, from people who confused loyalty with unlimited access to someone else's patience.
He turned around.
"After everything we've done for each other, I expected you to be honest with me.""
Marcus's face tightened.
For a moment, neither man moved.
Then Marcus said something Daniel hadn't expected.
"Terrence is talking about filing a police report.""
Daniel went still.
"Why?""
"Because he says you assaulted him.""
Daniel stared at him.
"I did slap him.""
"I know.""
"Then why are you telling me like it's some new revelation?""
"Because he wants to make it official.""
Daniel felt the blood drain from his face.
"Is he serious?""
Marcus nodded.
"He says he has the video.""
Daniel looked at the ground.
He had apologized. He had admitted his mistake. He had walked away instead of fighting again.
But none of that meant Terrence couldn't report what had happened.
And none of it meant the situation would end with a conversation in the courtyard.
"Does he have the full video?"" Daniel asked.
Marcus hesitated.
"I don't know.""
Daniel looked up.
"Find out.""
Marcus shook his head.
"I'm not getting in the middle of this anymore.""
"You were already in the middle of it.""
"Daniel—"
"No."" Daniel held up a hand, stopping himself before anger could take over again.
"I'm not asking you to defend me. I'm asking you not to hide what happened.""
Marcus's face changed.
For the first time, he looked ashamed.
"I'll talk to him," he said.
Daniel nodded once and left.
That evening, Daniel sat at his kitchen table with his laptop open.
He had saved the longer video Alicia sent him. He also saved screenshots of the messages Marcus had sent and the messages Terrence had sent demanding that he publicly change his account of the incident.
He didn't post anything.
He didn't threaten anyone.
He simply kept the records in case he needed them later.
At 9:42 p.m., his phone rang.
It was Devin.
Daniel stared at the name before answering.
"Hello?""
"Hey, man," Devin said. His voice sounded different from the easy confidence Daniel knew.
"You got a minute?""
"Depends. Why are you calling?""
Devin exhaled.
"Alicia told me you saw the full video.""
"Yes.""
"I'm sorry.""
Daniel leaned back in his chair.
"For recording me?""
"For how everything happened.""
"That's not an answer.""
Devin was quiet.
Then he said, "Marcus told me you wouldn't care if we messed with you a little. He said you'd probably laugh about it later.""
Daniel felt his jaw tighten.
"So you decided to provoke me on camera?""
"No. I mean, not exactly.""
"Then explain it exactly.""
Devin took a breath.
"We were hanging out before you came downstairs. Terrence was talking about how you always say no to everything. Marcus said you were acting different lately. I made a joke about filming you if you got annoyed.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"And they agreed?""
"Nobody said it was a big deal.""
"You filmed me without telling me because you thought it would be funny to make me angry.""
Devin's voice dropped.
"When you say it like that, yeah.""
Daniel stared at the ceiling.
"Why did you send Alicia the longer video?""
"Because Marcus posted the short one, and people started saying things about you. I didn't think it would get so serious.""
"But you helped make it serious.""
"I know.""
The quiet sincerity in Devin's voice almost disarmed him.
Almost.
"Why didn't you share the full video yourself?"" Daniel asked.
"Because I was scared Marcus and Terrence would turn on me.""
Daniel let out a humorless breath.
"So you let me take the blame until you got scared, too.""
Devin didn't argue.
"Yeah," he said.
"I did.""
For several seconds, Daniel couldn't find an answer.
Then Devin spoke again.
"There's something else you should know.""
Daniel's shoulders stiffened.
"What?""
"Terrence didn't start talking about the police after the video went around.""
Daniel sat forward.
"What do you mean?""
"He was talking about it before that. He said if you ever embarrassed him in front of people, he'd make sure you regretted it.""
Daniel stared at the phone.
"Why would he say that?""
"I don't know. I thought he was just talking.""
"Devin, did he know you were recording?""
"Yes.""
"And did he know Marcus was going to share the video?""
Devin paused.
"I think so.""
Daniel felt the room grow very quiet.
"Why do you think that?""
"Because before you slapped him, Terrence looked straight at the camera and smiled.""
Daniel remembered the longer recording.
The way Terrence had exchanged a look with Marcus.
The laughter.
The sudden, deliberate pause before the insult.
He opened the video on his laptop and dragged the playback bar backward.
There it was.
Just before Terrence said Daniel was being dramatic, Terrence glanced toward the camera.
And smiled.
Not the careless smile of a man joking with a friend.
The knowing smile of someone who believed he was about to get exactly what he wanted.
Daniel's phone pressed against his ear.
"Devin," he said slowly, "I need you to tell me something, and I need you to be honest.""
"Okay.""
"Did Terrence want me to hit him?""
Devin didn't answer.
May you like
Daniel watched the frozen image on his laptop.
Finally, Devin whispered, "I think he wanted you to do something he could use against you.""
