Chapter 8: The Truth Behind the First Message
The following morning, Daniel arrived at work early and asked Jamal if he could take a longer lunch break to seek legal advice.
Jamal agreed without asking unnecessary questions.
Daniel spent the next hour speaking with a local attorney who explained the importance of preserving evidence and avoiding direct confrontations with Terrence. The attorney didn't promise that the complaint would disappear. Instead, he advised Daniel to document the incident accurately, retain the original video, and refrain from contacting anyone in a way that could be interpreted as intimidation.
Daniel followed the advice.
He didn't message Terrence.
He didn't post the full video.
He didn't ask coworkers to take sides.
He simply kept the evidence.
At noon, he sat in the break room with a sandwich he barely touched. Devin's confession kept replaying in his mind.
Someone had given Terrence information about his financial situation before the confrontation. Renee's message had been genuine, but it hadn't necessarily been the first message.
Daniel opened the folder on his laptop and studied the screenshot Devin had sent.
The visible message from Renee had no date attached to it.
He called her again.
She answered on the second ring.
"Daniel?""
"Can I ask you something about the message you sent Terrence?""
"Of course.""
"When did he first contact you?""
Renee paused.
"Maybe two weeks ago. He asked whether you were okay.""
"What exactly did he say?""
"I don't remember the exact wording. He said you'd been distant, that you weren't coming out with everyone, and that he was worried you were having trouble.""
Daniel opened a blank document.
"Did he mention my car repair?""
"Yes.""
"How did he know about that?""
Renee was silent.
Then she said, "He told me Marcus had mentioned it.""
Daniel felt his pulse quicken.
"Marcus told Terrence about the money I borrowed?""
"I assumed you'd told him yourself.""
"I told Marcus. I didn't tell Terrence.""
Renee exhaled.
"Oh, Daniel.""
"Did Terrence ask you how much money I had?""
"No. He asked whether you were behind on rent.""
Daniel froze.
"Behind on rent?""
"Yes. I told him I didn't know that you were behind. I said you'd been stressed about the deposit and the car repair, but I didn't tell him anything about your account.""
Daniel stared at the table.
He hadn't been behind on rent.
He had paid it on time.
He had been worried about the repair bill and the deposit because he didn't want to fall behind.
Terrence had taken an ordinary financial concern and turned it into a claim that Daniel was desperate.
"Did you correct him?"" Daniel asked.
"Yes. I told him you were paying your bills and working hard. I said he should stop making assumptions.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"And then you sent the message asking him to give me space.""
"That's right.""
He thanked her and ended the call.
For several minutes, he sat without moving.
The pieces were beginning to fit together, but the picture was uglier than he had expected.
Marcus had shared the information about the loan.
Terrence had used it to construct a story about Daniel's finances.
Renee had tried to defend him without realizing the information was being twisted.
And somewhere in the middle of it, Terrence had decided Daniel needed to be humbled.
Daniel's phone rang.
It was Marcus.
Daniel considered letting it go to voicemail, then answered.
"What's up?""
Marcus sounded exhausted.
"Terrence is telling people you threatened him.""
Daniel straightened.
"When?""
"He says you told him you'd ruin his life if he filed a police report.""
Daniel stared at the wall.
"I never said that.""
"I know.""
"Then why are you calling me?""
"Because people are asking me about it. Terrence says he has messages proving you threatened him.""
Daniel felt a chill move through his chest.
"What messages?""
"He hasn't shown me.""
"Did I send him any messages threatening him?""
"No.""
"Then what exactly are you asking me?""
Marcus sighed.
"I'm asking you not to make things worse.""
Daniel almost laughed.
"How am I making things worse?""
"By talking to people about the video.""
"I haven't posted it anywhere.""
"Devin has.""
"Devin corrected the edited version you shared.""
Marcus fell silent.
Daniel continued.
"Marcus, I need you to tell me something. Did Terrence ever say he wanted to make me look bad before the cigarette incident?""
Marcus's breathing changed.
"Why?""
"Because Devin says he did.""
Marcus didn't answer.
"Marcus.""
"Yes," he finally admitted.
Daniel gripped the edge of the table.
"What exactly did he say?""
Marcus lowered his voice.
"He said you needed to learn that you couldn't keep turning people down and expect them to treat you like nothing had changed.""
Daniel stared at the wall.
"Turning people down.""
"Yeah.""
"So this was about me not going out with you?""
"Partly.""
"Partly?""
Marcus rubbed his face.
"Terrence had another problem with you.""
"What problem?""
Marcus hesitated.
Then he said, "He thought you were trying to get promoted over him at work.""
Daniel frowned.
"What?""
"Last month, you told him you were thinking about applying for that warehouse supervisor position. He thought you were trying to act like you'd outgrown everybody.""
Daniel couldn't believe what he was hearing.
The position had been at a warehouse near the airport. Daniel had mentioned it during a casual conversation because he was considering ways to increase his income. Terrence had laughed and told him to go for it.
Daniel had assumed the conversation ended there.
"I didn't even apply," Daniel said.
"I know.""
"Terrence doesn't work there. Why would he care?""
Marcus's voice grew quieter.
"Because he thought you were trying to leave the group behind.""
Daniel leaned back.
"So he decided to embarrass me before I could?""
"I don't know if that's exactly what he thought.""
"But you knew he was angry about it.""
"Yes.""
"And you didn't tell me.""
Marcus exhaled.
"I thought he'd get over it.""
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"How many things have you been keeping from me?""
Marcus didn't answer.
That silence was enough.
Daniel ended the call without another argument.
He returned to work, finished his shift, and went home.
At 7:30 p.m., Renee arrived at his apartment carrying a paper bag of food. She had texted first, asking whether he wanted company. Daniel had almost said no, but he knew that avoiding her wouldn't resolve anything.
He let her in.
She set the bag on the kitchen counter and looked at him carefully.
"You look exhausted.""
"I am.""
She took off her jacket.
"Do you want to talk?""
Daniel nodded.
They sat at the kitchen table, where Renee laid out containers of rice, roasted chicken, and vegetables. For several minutes, they ate in silence.
Then Renee set down her fork.
"I owe you an apology.""
Daniel looked up.
"I already know you're sorry.""
"No," she said.
"You know I feel bad. That's not the same thing.""
He waited.
"I shared something private because I thought I was helping. I assumed Terrence was worried about you, and I wanted him to understand that you were dealing with a lot. I didn't think about what would happen if he repeated it.""
Daniel looked at the food.
"I told you because I trusted you.""
"I know.""
"I wasn't asking you to solve anything.""
"I know.""
"And I didn't need you to protect me by talking to other people.""
Renee nodded.
"You're right.""
The simplicity of her answer made Daniel's throat tighten.
She reached across the table but stopped before touching his hand.
"Can I tell you why I answered Terrence's call?""
Daniel nodded.
"He told me you were pulling away from everyone. He said he thought you'd been depressed, that you weren't answering messages, and that he was worried you were dealing with something alone.""
Daniel frowned.
"I was working.""
"I know that now.""
"He knew I was working.""
"Maybe. But he sounded concerned.""
Daniel looked at her.
"Did he sound concerned when he asked whether I was behind on rent?""
Renee lowered her eyes.
"No.""
"Did he sound concerned when he told people I was pretending to be better than them?""
"No.""
"Then maybe we need to stop confusing curiosity with concern.""
Renee absorbed the words without arguing.
After a moment, she said, "I think you're right.""
Daniel felt the anger in his chest soften, though it didn't disappear.
"I don't want you to feel like you can't talk to people," he said.
"I just need you to ask me before sharing things I told you privately.""
"I will.""
"And if somebody comes to you with a story about me, ask me what happened before you decide what it means.""
Renee nodded.
"That's fair.""
They ate for a few more minutes.
Then Renee pulled her phone from her pocket.
"There's something else," she said.
Daniel looked up.
"When Terrence first contacted me, he sent a screenshot of a conversation. He said Marcus had told him you were borrowing money from people and pretending you were doing fine.""
Daniel's stomach tightened.
"What conversation?""
"I don't have the screenshot anymore. I deleted it because I thought it was just gossip.""
"Did it show my name?""
"I think so.""
"Did it show the amount?""
Renee nodded.
"He said you borrowed six hundred dollars.""
Daniel felt a wave of humiliation.
The amount wasn't enormous, but it was personal. He had borrowed the money because he needed it, then repaid it because he didn't want to owe anyone.
He had thought Marcus understood that.
Now he wondered whether Marcus had ever viewed the loan as a private favor or whether he had always considered it something he could use to establish a debt of loyalty.
Renee reached for his hand.
"I'm sorry, Daniel.""
He squeezed her fingers once.
"I believe you.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Thank you.""
"But I'm still hurt.""
"I know.""
They sat together until the food grew cold.
Before Renee left, she hugged him tightly.
"I love you," she said.
"I love you, too.""
After she had gone, Daniel washed the dishes and checked his phone.
A new message from Devin appeared.
*Devin:* I found the original message Terrence showed us. I asked him to send it again because I said I needed proof he wasn't making things up.
A screenshot followed.
Daniel opened it.
The message was from Marcus to Terrence.
*Marcus:* Daniel's been borrowing money and acting like he's got everything under control. He thinks he's better than everybody because he doesn't want to go out anymore.
Beneath it, Terrence had replied:
*Terrence:* Then let's see how independent he is when everybody sees what he's really like.
Daniel stared at the screen.
The message had been sent four days before the cigarette incident.
He read it again, then opened the next screenshot.
Marcus had replied to Terrence:
*Marcus:* Don't take it too far. He's still my boy.
Terrence's answer was the final message in the conversation.
*Terrence:* Relax. I know exactly how far to take it.
Daniel sat down slowly.
For the first time, he had something concrete showing that Terrence had discussed provoking him days before the confrontation.
It didn't erase the slap.
It didn't make Daniel innocent.
But it confirmed that the incident hadn't been the spontaneous joke Marcus and Terrence had described.
Daniel saved the screenshots.
Then he noticed something he hadn't seen at first.
The timestamp.
The messages had been sent at 11:47 p.m., four days before the confrontation.
And below them, Devin had added a message of his own.
*Devin:* Daniel, there's another part of the conversation. I didn't send it because I wasn't sure you were ready to see it.
Daniel typed back.
*Daniel:* Send it.
Three dots appeared.
Then a new screenshot arrived.
It showed a message Terrence had sent to Marcus the night before the courtyard incident.
*Terrence:* Tomorrow, don't let him walk away. If he gets mad, Devin records it. If he touches me, I've got him.
Daniel felt the room tilt around him.
He read the message again.
Tomorrow, don't let him walk away.
If he gets mad, Devin records it.
If he touches me, I've got him.
For a long moment, Daniel couldn't move.
Then he opened his notes, added the screenshot to his records, and called the attorney he had spoken with earlier.
The situation had changed.
He was still responsible for the slap.
But now there was evidence that Terrence had planned to provoke a confrontation and capture a reaction he could use against Daniel.
And Daniel finally understood why Terrence had been so determined to make him apologize publicly.
It wasn't enough for Terrence to be right about the slap.
He wanted Daniel to accept the story Terrence had built around it.
May you like
Daniel wasn't going to do that.
Not anymore.
