Chapter 7: The Name He Never Expected to Hear
For several seconds, Daniel couldn't hear anything except the blood rushing through his ears.
Renee.
His sister's name sat between him and Devin like a third person at the table.
Daniel had spent the previous night listening to her tell him to preserve the evidence, stay calm, and stop trying to repair a friendship with people who kept changing the rules. She had sounded protective. Practical. Honest.
Now Devin was telling him that she might have been the person who gave Terrence private information about his finances.
"Say that again," Daniel said.
Devin swallowed.
"I saw her name on the message.""
"What message?""
"The one Terrence showed us before you came downstairs. He said someone had told him you were struggling with money.""
Daniel pulled his chair back and sat down again.
"Did you actually see Renee's name, or did Terrence tell you it was Renee?""
"I saw it.""
"On what app?""
"Instagram, I think. It was a screenshot of a direct message.""
"Did you read the whole conversation?""
"No. Terrence only showed us the message.""
Daniel stared at him.
"Why would my sister send Terrence anything about my money?""
"I don't know.""
"Did she know you were planning to record me?""
"No. I don't think so.""
"Did she tell Terrence to provoke me?""
Devin shook his head quickly.
"I never heard her say anything like that.""
Daniel leaned back and pressed his hands together.
There were too many possibilities, and none of them made sense yet.
Maybe Renee had told Terrence something in confidence, believing he was a trusted friend. Maybe Terrence had taken an ordinary conversation and twisted it into something ugly. Maybe Devin had misunderstood the name.
Or maybe his sister had betrayed him.
He hated that the possibility existed at all.
"Show me what you have," Daniel said.
Devin unlocked his phone and opened a conversation. He scrolled through several messages, then turned the screen around.
A screenshot showed Terrence holding his phone in the courtyard the previous afternoon. The image was slightly blurry, but the name at the top of the message was visible.
Renee.
The message beneath it read:
Daniel's been under a lot of financial pressure lately. He won't admit when he needs help. Please don't make things harder for him right now.
Daniel read it once.
Then again.
The words didn't sound malicious.
They sounded exactly like Renee.
But the screenshot ended there. There was no timestamp, no preceding message, and no reply.
"Did Terrence show you anything else?"" Daniel asked.
"No.""
"Did he say what he planned to do with this?""
Devin shook his head.
"He said it proved you weren't as independent as you acted.""
Daniel looked at the screenshot again.
His sister had apparently told Terrence he was struggling financially. She had asked him not to make things harder for Daniel.
Somehow, Terrence had turned that into ammunition.
Daniel felt anger rise, but beneath it was a deeper hurt.
He had told Renee about the car repair because he trusted her. He had told her about the rent deposit because he needed someone to talk to. He had admitted that he was tired of feeling as though every unexpected expense could undo months of careful budgeting.
He hadn't expected her to keep every detail secret from every person in his life.
But he had expected her to protect him from people who might use those details against him.
"Send me that screenshot," Daniel said.
Devin did.
Daniel saved it, thanked him for meeting, and walked out into the cool evening air.
He didn't call Renee immediately.
He wanted to hear her explanation, but he didn't want to hear it while he was angry enough to mistake every pause for a lie.
Instead, he walked three blocks, found a quiet bench outside a closed office building, and called Marcus.
Marcus answered after five rings.
"What?""
"Did you know Terrence had a message from my sister about my finances?""
Silence.
Then Marcus said, "Who told you that?""
"Answer the question.""
"I saw the message.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"What did it say?""
"I don't remember exactly.""
"Marcus.""
"She said you were stressed about money and that we should give you some space.""
Daniel looked at the passing headlights.
"That's what Devin showed me.""
"Then why are you asking me?""
"Because I want to know what Terrence did with it.""
Marcus sighed.
"Terrence took it the wrong way.""
"How?""
"He thought you were telling people you were too good for us while secretly struggling.""
Daniel sat forward.
"Those two things aren't even related.""
"I know that.""
"Do you?""
Marcus was quiet.
Daniel continued.
"My sister asked you to give me space. Instead, you decided I was pretending to be better than everybody. Then you kept pushing me until I lost my temper.""
"I didn't make you slap Terrence.""
"I never said you did.""
"Then stop making it sound like everything is my fault.""
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"I am trying to understand why you all decided my private life was a joke.""
Marcus's voice softened slightly.
"Terrence felt like you were pulling away from us. He thought you were embarrassed by us.""
"So he decided to embarrass me first?""
"I don't know what he was thinking.""
"Did he tell you he wanted me to snap?""
Another silence followed.
This one was longer.
Finally, Marcus said, "He said you needed to be brought down to earth.""
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
"When?""
"Before the cigarette.""
"Did you know he wanted Devin to record me?""
"Yes.""
The honesty hurt more than another denial would have.
Daniel stared at the pavement.
"You knew.""
"I thought it was going to be a joke.""
"You knew he wanted to provoke me.""
"Daniel, nobody thought you were actually going to hit him.""
Marcus's voice rose in frustration.
"Terrence thought you'd yell, maybe walk away. He wanted a reaction. That's all.""
Daniel swallowed.
"And when I slapped him?""
"Everything got out of control.""
"No, Marcus. Everything changed.""
Neither spoke for several seconds.
Then Marcus said, "I'm sorry.""
Daniel waited.
"I'm sorry I shared the video," Marcus continued.
"I'm sorry I didn't tell you about Devin. And I'm sorry I let Terrence turn it into something bigger.""
The apology was better than the one Daniel had received in the courtyard.
It was specific.
It acknowledged choices.
But Daniel couldn't tell whether Marcus was apologizing because he finally understood what he'd done or because the full video had begun to surface.
"Why didn't you tell me yesterday?"" Daniel asked.
"Because I was embarrassed.""
"About what?""
"About being part of it.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
For years, Marcus had been the friend who showed up. The friend who answered calls, who remembered birthdays, who helped without keeping score.
Now Daniel was trying to reconcile that person with the man who had knowingly shared an edited video to make him look dangerous.
"I need some time," Daniel said.
Marcus's voice dropped.
"Are we done?""
"I don't know.""
"After everything we've been through?""
Daniel looked up at the darkening sky.
"That's exactly why this hurts.""
He ended the call.
Then he called Renee.
She answered almost immediately.
"Hey, little brother. How did the meeting go?""
Daniel's throat tightened at the familiar warmth in her voice.
"Did you message Terrence about my finances?""
There was a pause.
"Yes," Renee said.
"Why?""
Daniel had prepared himself for denial.
The simple admission left him momentarily speechless.
"You told him I was struggling?""
"I told him you were stressed and that he should give you some space. He'd asked me why you weren't going out with everyone anymore.""
Daniel stared at the empty sidewalk.
"Why were you talking to Terrence about my money?""
"He called me. He said he was worried about you.""
"And you believed him?""
"Daniel, he's been your friend for years.""
"So have you.""
Renee went quiet.
Daniel heard a door close on her end of the call.
"What's going on?"" she asked.
"Terrence used your message to convince people I was pretending to be better than them. He used it to justify provoking me. Devin says Terrence wanted me to snap on camera.""
"What?""
Daniel explained what Devin had told him. He described the recording, the edited clip, and the threat of a police report.
When he finished, Renee sounded furious.
"I never told him to do anything like that.""
"I know you didn't say that in the message.""
"Daniel, I was trying to protect you.""
"By telling Terrence I was struggling?""
"I didn't think he'd use it against you!""
Daniel looked down at his hands.
"How could you be sure?""
"Because I thought he was your friend!""
"So did I.""
The words came out sharper than he intended.
Renee fell silent.
Daniel immediately regretted the tone, but not the question.
"I trusted you with that information," he said.
"I didn't want everybody knowing how much pressure I was under.""
"I understand.""
"Do you? Because when I needed someone to talk to, I talked to you. I didn't ask you to fix anything. I just needed you to listen.""
Renee's voice trembled.
"I'm sorry.""
Daniel swallowed.
"I know you love me. I'm not questioning that. But you can't decide who gets to know my business just because you think they mean well.""
"You're right," she whispered.
"I should have asked you first.""
He rubbed his eyes.
"I need to go.""
"Daniel, please don't hang up angry.""
"I'm not trying to punish you. I just need to think.""
They ended the call gently, but Daniel still felt as if something important had shifted.
He walked home alone.
When he reached his apartment, a new message from Devin was waiting.
*Devin:* I sent the full video to everyone who got the edited version. I also told them I recorded it and shouldn't have.
A second message followed.
*Devin:* Terrence is furious. He's saying I'm lying because I'm scared of getting blamed.
Daniel sat on the edge of his bed and typed a reply.
*Daniel:* You did the right thing by correcting the record. Don't get into another argument with him.
He put the phone down.
For the first time since the slap, the truth was reaching people who had seen only the worst moment.
But the relief didn't last.
At 10:18 p.m., an unknown number called.
Daniel almost ignored it.
Then he answered.
"Hello?""
A man's voice spoke from the other end.
"Is this Daniel Brooks?""
"Who's asking?""
"My name is Officer Harris with the Atlanta Police Department. I'm calling regarding an incident reported by a Terrence Walker.""
Daniel sat upright.
"Yes?""
"We've received a complaint alleging that you struck Mr. Walker during an altercation at your apartment complex.""
Daniel's mouth went dry.
"I understand.""
"Are you willing to speak with an officer about what happened?""
Daniel remembered Renee's advice.
He remembered Jamal telling him not to let anger lead him into another confrontation.
He also remembered that he had already admitted what he'd done.
"Yes," Daniel said carefully.
"I'd like to cooperate, but I want to understand the process before giving a detailed statement.""
"That's reasonable," Officer Harris replied.
"You can arrange to speak with an officer. If you have video or messages relevant to the incident, preserve them.""
Daniel thanked him and ended the call.
For a moment, he simply sat there.
Then his phone vibrated again.
This time, it was a message from Terrence.
*Terrence:* You thought you could embarrass me and walk away. Now everybody gets to see what happens when you put your hands on somebody.
Daniel stared at the screen.
A second message arrived.
*Terrence:* And don't think that full video is going to save you.
Daniel set the phone down.
He was afraid.
He was angry.
He was ashamed of the slap.
But beneath all of it, something else was beginning to take shape.
A determination not to let Terrence turn his worst moment into the only truth anyone was allowed to see.
Daniel opened his laptop and created a folder.
He saved every screenshot, every message, and every version of the video he had received. He wrote down the dates and times of the calls. He made a note of what Devin had told him and what Marcus had admitted.
He wasn't building a story to make himself innocent.
He was preserving what had actually happened.
At the bottom of the document, he typed one final line:
Find out who first sent Terrence the message about my finances.
Because Renee had only told Terrence to give him space.
May you like
Somebody else had taken that private information and used it to start something.
And Daniel needed to know who.
