Chapter 7: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Daniel stared at the frozen image.

The woman on the screen stood beneath the rain, her face partially hidden by the umbrella.

But he knew that posture.

That way of walking.

That slight tilt of her head.

“Impossible,” he whispered.

Reyes looked at the officer.

“Enhance the footage.””

The officer shook his head.

“We already tried. The image quality isn't enough.””

Daniel grabbed the tablet.

“No.””

His fingers moved across the screen.

“No, that's not possible.””

Eli stepped closer.

“Dad?””

Daniel barely heard him.

Sarah was dead.

He had watched the doctors stop trying.

He had signed documents.

He had buried her.

He had visited her grave every anniversary.

Dead people did not appear on security footage.

Richard spoke quietly.

“It's not her.””

Everyone turned.

Daniel looked at his brother.

“What did you say?””

Richard avoided his eyes.

“I said it's not Sarah.””

“How do you know?””

Richard's silence answered before his words did.

Daniel walked toward him.

“How do you know?””

“Because I know what happened.””

The room became still.

Reyes immediately stepped between them.

“Mr. Mercer, choose your next words carefully.””

Richard looked exhausted.

“I thought she was dead.””

Daniel froze.

“You thought?””

Richard closed his eyes.

“The accident was worse than you know.””

“Explain.””

Richard looked at the floor.

“Sarah survived the crash.””

The sentence destroyed the room.

Daniel couldn't understand it.

No.

His brain rejected it.

“She survived?””

“For a short time.””

“Then why was I told she died instantly?””

Richard's voice became quieter.

“Because that's what we needed everyone to believe.””

Daniel stepped back.

His mother covered her face.

“You knew,” Daniel said.

Margaret whispered, “Richard told me.””

The betrayal was almost impossible to process.

His wife had been alive after the crash.

His family had known.

And they had allowed him to mourn a version of events they created.

“Where is she?”” Daniel asked.

Nobody answered.

“Where is my wife?””

Richard looked toward Vanessa.

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Daniel turned.

“What does she know?””

Richard looked away.

That was enough.

Daniel moved toward Vanessa.

“What happened?””

She backed away.

“I wasn't there.””

“You were.””

“I didn't hurt her.””

“I didn't ask that.””

Vanessa's face crumpled.

“I found her after the crash.””

The words came out barely audible.

“She was alive.””

Daniel felt like the air had been taken from the room.

“What did you do?””

“I called Richard.””

“And?””

Vanessa started crying.

“He told me to leave.””

Daniel stared.

“You left my wife dying?””

“I was scared.””

“You left her?””

Vanessa covered her face.

“I thought she was going to die anyway.””

Daniel's voice became dangerously calm.

“And when she didn't?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Richard did.

“She disappeared.””

Reyes stepped forward.

“Where?””

Richard looked at the floor.

“I don't know.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I swear.””

“You lied for four years.””

“I thought she was dead.””

“But you knew she wasn't.””

Richard looked at him.

“For the first few days.””

The detective immediately reacted.

“Explain.””

Richard sat down heavily.

“Sarah escaped.””

Daniel felt a strange wave of relief.

A tiny, impossible hope.

“She escaped?””

Richard nodded.

“She contacted someone.””

“Who?””

Richard looked toward Margaret.

“She didn't trust us.””

Daniel almost smiled.

“She was smarter than all of you.””

Richard continued.

“She sent messages. Threats. She said she would expose everything.””

“And?””

“And then she vanished.””

“Because you killed her.””

“No.””

Richard's voice broke.

“No. Because someone else found her first.””

The room went silent.

Reyes leaned forward.

“Who?””

Richard looked at Daniel.

“Your father.””

Nobody moved.

“That makes no sense,” Daniel said.

“My father was dead.””

Richard nodded.

“I know.””

Daniel stared.

“Then explain.””

Richard swallowed.

“Your father wasn't working alone before he died.””

He looked toward the old wooden walls of the boathouse.

“There was another person controlling everything.””

“Who?””

Richard hesitated.

Then he said:

“Your father left behind a partner.””

Daniel felt a chill.

“Who?””

Richard's eyes moved toward the doorway.

“Someone who never stopped watching this family.””

A phone rang.

Everyone turned.

The sound came from Margaret's handbag.

She froze.

Reyes immediately reached for it.

“Don't touch it.””

Margaret slowly removed the phone.

The screen displayed one name.

*Sarah.*

Daniel stopped breathing.

The detective answered on speaker.

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a woman's voice spoke.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

“Daniel?””

His knees almost gave out.

“Sarah?””

Everyone heard the voice.

Everyone.

A long pause followed.

Then she whispered:

“I knew the only way to save you was to let you believe I was gone.””

Daniel couldn't speak.

“Where are you?””

“I can't tell you.””

“Why?””

“Because if I tell you, they will find me.””

“Who?””

Sarah's voice trembled.

“The person who planned everything.””

Daniel looked around the room.

At Richard.

At Margaret.

At Vanessa.

Then Sarah said the words that froze him.

May you like

“Daniel, the person you trusted most is not the person you think.””

The call ended.
