Chapter 9: The Man Who Owned the Past

Thomas Vale was not dead.

That was the first truth.

The second was worse.

He owned half of the secrets that had destroyed Daniel's family.

Reyes uncovered the history within hours.

Thomas Vale had been Daniel's father's closest business partner before disappearing after a corporate dispute.

Officially, he died in a boating accident.

Unofficially, there was no body.

No confirmed witnesses.

Just paperwork.

The same kind of paperwork Daniel had spent years trusting.

“He erased himself,” Reyes said.

Daniel stared at the files.

“Why?””

“Because someone helped him.””

“Who?””

The detective didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

Margaret.

Richard.

Vanessa.

Everyone connected to the Mercer family had been protecting a ghost.

That night, Sarah contacted them again.

This time, she gave them a location.

An abandoned farmhouse outside the city.

Daniel arrived with police.

But he went inside alone.

Sarah stood by the window.

Alive.

Older.

Tired.

Real.

For several seconds, neither of them moved.

Then Daniel crossed the room.

She broke down before he reached her.

“I’m sorry.””

He held her.

Not because everything was forgiven.

Because after four years, he finally had her back.

“You should have trusted me.””

“I wanted to.””

“Then why?””

She cried quietly.

“Because Richard found me first.””

Daniel pulled away.

“What?””

“He told me you were in danger. He said if I returned, they would kill you and Eli.””

“Who?””

Sarah looked toward the door.

“Thomas.””

Daniel went silent.

“He was never dead.””

Sarah nodded.

“Your father and Thomas built the company together. When they fought, your father tried to remove him. Thomas didn't leave. He went underground.””

“And my father?””

“Your father spent years trying to protect the family from him.””

Daniel thought of the letter.

The warnings.

The safeguards.

Everything suddenly connected.

“Then why did everyone think my father was the villain?””

“Because Thomas made sure they did.””

Sarah explained everything.

Thomas had manipulated Richard through ambition. He had convinced Margaret that control was the only way to protect the family. He had used Vanessa's desperation to create the fake pregnancy scheme.

Every lie had been connected.

Every betrayal had served one purpose.

Control.

“Why come back now?”” Daniel asked.

Sarah looked terrified.

“Because he knows you found me.””

A sound came from outside.

A car door closing.

Daniel and Sarah froze.

Reyes' team moved instantly.

Then the lights went out.

Someone had cut the power.

A voice echoed from the darkness.

“You two were always sentimental.””

Thomas.

Daniel turned.

A figure stood near the entrance.

Older.

Gray hair.

Calm.

The man from the photograph.

Thomas Vale.

“I should have known Sarah would ruin everything.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You destroyed my family.””

Thomas smiled.

“No. I revealed what your family always was.””

Police moved behind Daniel.

Thomas didn't react.

Because he knew something they didn't.

He raised a remote device.

A small screen lit up.

On it was Eli.

Daniel froze.

“No.””

Thomas smiled.

“Everyone has a weakness.””

The screen showed Eli sitting in a vehicle.

Safe.

Alive.

But terrified.

Thomas spoke softly.

“Your father had control.””

“Let him go.””

“He understood something you never did, Daniel.””

“What?””

“Family is leverage.””

Daniel's hands shook.

“You're nothing like him.””

Thomas smiled.

“I was the only one who understood him.””

He stepped backward.

Then he said:

May you like

“Tomorrow, you will choose between exposing the truth and losing your son.””

The screen went black.
