Chapter 8: Sarah’s Last Truth

The investigation changed overnight.

The police confirmed the phone call had originated from a hidden relay system, making the location nearly impossible to trace.

Nearly.

Reyes refused to give up.

Daniel refused to sleep.

For the first time in four years, he had proof that Sarah was alive.

Not a memory.

Not a dream.

Proof.

Eli sat beside him in the quiet living room of a secured police residence.

“Dad?””

Daniel looked over.

“Yeah?””

“If Mom is alive… does that mean she left us?””

The question broke him.

“No.””

“Then why didn't she come back?””

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Because the truth was complicated.

Because sometimes people disappeared not because they stopped loving you.

Sometimes they disappeared because they were trying to protect you.

“I think,” Daniel said slowly, “your mom thought staying away was the only way to keep us safe.””

Eli looked down.

“I hated her.””

Daniel's heart tightened.

“I know.””

“I thought she abandoned me.””

Daniel moved closer.

“But she never stopped loving you.””

“How do you know?””

Daniel remembered the recording.

The letters.

The way Sarah had hidden evidence instead of running.

“Because your mother spent four years making sure we would find the truth.””

That evening, Reyes received the first breakthrough.

A hidden file had been recovered from Sarah's old phone.

Not audio.

Video.

Sarah appeared on the screen.

Older than Daniel remembered by only a few months, but tired.

She looked directly into the camera.

“If you're watching this, then I failed to stop them.””

Daniel covered his mouth.

Eli grabbed his hand.

Sarah continued.

“I need you to understand something. I didn't leave because I wanted to. I left because Richard found out I survived.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“He came back to finish what he started.””

The video showed Sarah sitting in a small room.

“I escaped because someone helped me.””

She paused.

“Someone inside the family.””

Daniel looked at Reyes.

“Margaret?””

The detective shook her head.

“Keep watching.””

Sarah continued.

“I thought Richard was the only threat. I was wrong.””

Her expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“The person behind him is someone who has access to everything.””

She leaned closer.

“Daniel, do not trust anyone with the Mercer name.””

The screen froze briefly.

Then Sarah said:

“Especially the person who raised you.””

Daniel went completely still.

Reyes watched him carefully.

“Your mother.””

He couldn't respond.

Because deep down, he had already known.

Margaret had not been manipulated.

She had been involved.

The next morning, police returned to question her.

But Margaret was gone.

Her room was empty.

Her passport was missing.

And on the table was a note.

For Daniel.

He opened it.

I wanted to protect you.

I know you won't believe that.

But someday you may understand that every choice I made came from fear.

Your father was not the monster you think he was.

He was trying to stop something much worse.

Daniel crushed the paper.

“She's still protecting him.””

Reyes nodded.

“Yes.””

Then another officer entered.

“Detective, we found something in Mrs. Mercer's abandoned car.””

He handed her an envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

A young Margaret.

A young Richard.

And another man standing beside them.

Daniel looked at the stranger.

He didn't recognize him.

Then Reyes turned the photograph over.

A name was written on the back.

*Thomas Vale.*

Daniel froze.

“Vale?””

Reyes looked at him.

“You know that name?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Thomas Vale founded the company with my father.””

The detective looked confused.

“But records show Thomas Vale died twenty years ago.””

Daniel stared at the photograph.

The man standing beside his family looked very much alive.

And then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

Daniel answered.

A man's voice spoke.

“Daniel Mercer.””

“Who is this?””

A quiet laugh.

“Someone who has been waiting for you to discover the truth.””

Daniel's grip tightened.

“Thomas Vale?””

Silence.

Then:

May you like

“You always were your father's weakest mistake.””

The call ended.
