Chapter 2: The Name Behind the Call

The name on Daniel’s phone stayed between us like a warning.

Marta Alvarez.

For twelve years, Marta had been one of the few people at the Mirador I trusted without question.

She had been there before the grand opening.

Before the luxury suites.

Before the celebrity events.

Before investors started shaking Daniel’s hand and calling him the face of the resort.

Marta had been there when the lagoon was nothing but a hole in the ground filled with construction equipment.

She knew every pipe beneath the water.

Every mistake we made.

Every sacrifice.

And now her name was flashing across my husband’s phone.

Daniel quickly picked it up and stepped away.

“Hello?””

His voice changed instantly.

The anger disappeared.

The confidence disappeared.

He sounded nervous.

I watched him walk toward the office window, turning his back to me as if that could somehow make his conversation private.

It couldn’t.

Not anymore.

Not after everything.

“I told you not to call me here,” he whispered.

A cold feeling moved through my chest.

Not because I heard the words.

Because I didn’t need to hear more.

People don’t whisper when there is nothing to hide.

I stood up slowly.

Daniel glanced back.

Our eyes met.

For a second, I saw the old version of him.

The man who held my hand during the first night we slept in an unfinished resort office because we couldn’t afford a hotel.

The man who ate cheap takeout with me on the floor because our dining room table hadn’t arrived yet.

The man who promised me that success would never change him.

Then the phone call ended.

Daniel placed the phone down.

Neither of us spoke.

Finally, he said, “Marta was calling about work.””

I looked at him.

“Really?””

“Yes.””

“You looked terrified.””

“I was surprised.””

“By a work call?””

“Yes.””

I nodded slowly.

The strange thing about betrayal was that sometimes the biggest lies came wrapped in the smallest explanations.

I picked up the bill again.

“Who approved this expense?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

That was his mistake.

A truthful person answers before they have time to build a story.

“I don’t remember,” he said.

I laughed quietly.

“You don’t remember approving a $48,000 charge?””

His face tightened.

“It was for a client event.””

“What client?””

“Claire.””

“What client?””

The room went silent.

Outside my office windows, the Mirador continued operating perfectly.

Guests walked through the lobby.

Staff members carried trays of champagne.

The fountain show from last night was already being cleaned and prepared for another performance.

Everything looked normal.

That was the cruelest part.

A place could look beautiful while everything underneath was collapsing.

Daniel walked toward my desk.

“Listen to me. I know you’re angry.””

“Angry?””

“Yes.””

I stared at him.

“You think this is about being angry?””

“What else is it?””

I looked at the man standing in front of me.

The man I had defended for years.

The man I had introduced to investors as my partner.

The man who now stood in my office trying to explain away a secret bill after being caught kissing another woman.

“This is about trust,” I said.

Daniel looked away.

Just briefly.

But I noticed.

“And you lost it,” I continued.

His expression hardened.

“You’re acting like I destroyed everything.””

“Didn’t you?””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

“No?””

“I made one mistake.””

“One?””

His eyes narrowed.

“Don’t do that.””

“Do what?””

“Turn this into some kind of trial.””

I looked at the bill.

“Then tell me the truth.””

Daniel stayed silent.

That silence was the answer.

Before he could say anything else, someone knocked on the office door.

Neither of us moved.

A second knock came.

Then the door opened.

Marta stood there.

She looked uncomfortable.

Older than she had the day before.

Her hands were folded tightly in front of her.

“Sorry,” she said.

“I didn’t know you were both here.””

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“Marta, we’re busy.””

But she didn’t look at him.

She looked at me.

That told me everything.

“Marta,” I said.

“Come in.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Claire—”

“No.””

One word.

And for once, he stopped.

Marta slowly entered the office.

I had seen her calm during emergencies.

A broken fountain valve.

A power failure.

A guest accident.

She never panicked.

But now she looked scared.

“Ma’am,” she said quietly.

“Tell me why you called Daniel.””

Her eyes moved toward him.

Daniel shook his head slightly.

A warning.

A command.

I saw it.

Marta saw it too.

And that was when I realized something.

Daniel wasn’t just hiding something from me.

He was controlling who else could speak.

“I called because…” Marta started.

Daniel interrupted.

“Marta, this isn’t necessary.””

I turned toward him.

“Why are you answering for her?””

He didn’t respond.

Marta took a breath.

Then she reached into her bag.

She pulled out a folder.

My stomach tightened.

“What is that?””

Marta placed it on my desk.

“Copies.””

“Copies of what?””

She looked at Daniel.

Then back at me.

“Records.””

Daniel moved forward.

“Marta.””

This time, his voice wasn’t angry.

It was a warning.

A serious one.

But Marta didn’t stop.

“Ma’am, I should have told you sooner.””

I opened the folder.

Inside were printed documents.

Invoices.

Approval forms.

Email records.

My eyes moved across the first page.

A familiar signature appeared at the bottom.

Daniel’s.

Then another.

Lena’s.

My heart began beating faster.

“What am I looking at?””

Marta swallowed.

“Expenses from the last eight months.””

I flipped through the pages.

Luxury dinners.

Private transportation.

Hotel rooms.

Event deposits.

But these weren’t random.

They followed a pattern.

Every charge happened on days when Daniel told me he was traveling for business.

Every location was somewhere he claimed to be meeting investors.

My fingers tightened around the papers.

“He told me he was in Phoenix that weekend.””

Marta looked down.

“He wasn’t.””

The room felt smaller.

“How do you know?””

“Because I processed the resort access reports.””

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

Her face changed.

“I suspected.””

“Suspected what?””

Marta hesitated.

Then she said the words I didn’t want to hear.

“That Daniel and Lena weren’t just having an affair.””

The air disappeared from my lungs.

I stared at her.

“What?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“That’s enough.””

“No,” I said.

My voice surprised even me.

“No, she doesn’t stop.””

Marta looked at me.

Her eyes were filled with guilt.

“They were using Mirador funds.””

I looked at Daniel.

He didn’t deny it.

Not immediately.

That was all I needed.

“What kind of funds?””

Daniel finally spoke.

“Claire, this is being misunderstood.””

“Answer me.””

“It was temporary.””

My hands went cold.

Temporary.

Another word.

Another excuse.

“What was temporary?””

He looked frustrated now.

Like I was making things difficult.

“Some transfers.””

“Transfers to where?””

Silence.

Marta answered.

“To a company called Silver Horizon Events.””

I froze.

Because I knew that name.

Everyone in Las Vegas hospitality knew that name.

A small event company that had suddenly appeared six months ago.

A company that had been winning contracts from resorts all over the city.

A company owned by…

I looked at Daniel.

“No.””

He looked away.

“Daniel.””

He didn’t answer.

“Who owns Silver Horizon?””

Marta’s voice was barely above a whisper.

“Lena.””

I felt something inside me crack.

Not because of Lena.

Not even because of the money.

Because I finally understood.

This wasn’t a man who made a mistake.

This was a man who had been building something behind my back.

Something separate from me.

Something that could survive without me.

I walked to the window.

Below, the lagoon fountains started their afternoon test cycle.

The same water that had soaked Daniel and Lena the night before.

The same water I designed.

The same water that carried my dreams.

“How much?”” I asked.

No one answered.

I turned around.

“How much money did you move?””

Daniel rubbed his face.

“Claire—”

“How much?””

Finally, he said:

“Not as much as you think.””

I stared at him.

That was not an answer.

“How much?””

His eyes met mine.

And for the first time, I saw the person he had become.

Not my husband.

Not my partner.

Someone who had convinced himself he deserved whatever he took.

“Two hundred thousand.””

Marta closed her eyes.

I felt dizzy.

Two hundred thousand dollars.

From my resort.

From my company.

From everything we built together.

Daniel stepped closer.

“But I can fix it.””

I almost laughed.

“Fix it?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Then his phone buzzed again.

Everyone in the room looked at it.

Daniel reached for it.

I moved faster.

I picked it up first.

His face changed.

“Claire, don’t.””

I looked at the screen.

A message preview appeared.

One sentence.

One sentence that changed everything.

*The owner is asking questions. We need to move the remaining files tonight.*

I slowly lifted my eyes toward Daniel.

“Remaining files?””

He didn’t answer.

I turned the phone around so he could see it.

“Daniel…”

My voice was quiet.

Almost calm.

“Who is the owner?””

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Daniel looked toward the office door.

Toward the hallway.

Toward the entire resort that he thought he controlled.

And he whispered:

“She’s not supposed to know yet.””

My heart stopped.

“She?””

Daniel’s face went pale.

Because he realized he had said too much.

I stepped closer.

“Who is she?””

He looked at me.

And before he could answer, the office lights suddenly went dark.

The entire Mirador lost power.

Then, from somewhere outside my office, the emergency alarms began to sound.

And through the darkness, I heard Marta whisper:

“Oh no…”

I grabbed the edge of my desk.

“What?””

Marta looked toward the window.

Her face drained of color.

“The backup system.””

“What about it?””

She swallowed.

“Someone just shut down the entire resort’s security network.””

A second later, every phone in the room received the same alert.

A message from the Mirador system.

*ADMIN ACCESS TRANSFERRED.*

And beneath it was one name.

Not Daniel.

Not Lena.

May you like

Mine.

But I had never authorized the transfer.
