Chapter 5: The Man Who Owned My Name

The countdown on the archive wall continued.

*09:42*

The numbers changed every second.

Slowly.

Calmly.

Like whoever designed this nightmare wanted me to watch every moment of my life being taken away.

I stared at the screen.

*TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP: PENDING*

Underneath it was a line of text.

*AUTHORIZED BY: CLAIRE BENNETT*

My name.

Again.

Always my name.

I turned toward Daniel.

He looked as shocked as I felt.

But I didn’t trust that anymore.

Not after everything.

Not after finding out he knew about my mother.

Not after learning he had been moving money from the resort.

Not after hearing his own recorded voice telling someone to stop me.

“Did you create this?”” I asked.

Daniel looked at me.

“No.””

“Then why is your voice on the recording?””

“I don’t know.””

I laughed softly.

“You don’t know a lot.””

His expression hardened.

“I’m trying to help you.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You’re trying to survive.””

The words hit him.

Because they were true.

For years, Daniel had been the person who always knew what to do.

The person who walked into a room and took control.

But now he was trapped with me.

And suddenly, he wasn’t the most powerful person there.

Marta moved quickly toward the security panel.

“There has to be a manual override.””

“Can you stop it?””

“I don’t know.””

That answer scared me more than anything else.

Marta knew the Mirador better than anyone.

If she didn’t know, then whoever built this system had planned for everything.

She removed the panel cover and examined the wires.

“Someone installed a private control layer.””

I frowned.

“A what?””

“A system inside the system.””

Daniel looked up.

“Impossible.””

Marta gave him a cold look.

“No. Expensive. Complicated. But not impossible.””

She pointed at the screen.

“Someone created a hidden administrator account.””

I stared at the countdown.

“Using my identity.””

“Yes.””

“Can we find who?””

Marta hesitated.

Then she looked at the screen again.

“Maybe.””

She typed quickly.

Lines of code appeared.

The countdown continued.

*08:55*

*08:54*

I watched every second.

My entire life was inside that building.

Every memory.

Every sacrifice.

Every dollar.

Every sleepless night.

And someone was trying to erase me with a button.

“Claire.””

Daniel’s voice was quieter now.

I ignored him.

“Claire, listen.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“There’s something I need to tell you.””

I almost smiled.

“Another secret?””

His jaw tightened.

“Yes.””

At least he admitted it.

That was new.

“What?””

He looked at Marta.

She stopped typing.

“Maybe she should hear this.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel took a breath.

“When I met your mother, I wasn’t trying to steal the Mirador.””

I stared at him.

“Then what were you doing?””

He looked ashamed.

A feeling I had almost forgotten he was capable of showing.

“I was trying to save it.””

I said nothing.

Because I knew better than to interrupt.

“I found out the resort was in trouble before we opened.””

I frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

“No. It isn’t.””

“You told me investors were excited.””

“They were.””

“Then why was it in trouble?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“Because of your mother.””

My entire body went still.

“What?””

“She borrowed money to build the first phase.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“I saw the documents.””

“You’re lying.””

“I’m not.””

I looked at Marta.

She looked uncomfortable.

That was enough.

“You knew?””

Marta slowly nodded.

“Some of us did.””

The betrayal felt heavier than Daniel’s affair.

Because this was older.

Deeper.

Everyone had been protecting me from a truth they thought I couldn’t handle.

Daniel continued.

“Your mother didn’t tell you because she knew you would try to fix everything.””

I swallowed.

“And you?””

“I found out after we were married.””

“So you decided what?””

He looked at me.

“That I could protect you.””

I laughed.

A painful laugh.

“Protect me?””

“Yes.””

“By lying?””

“I thought I was buying time.””

“For how long?””

He didn’t answer.

Because there was no good answer.

The countdown continued.

*06:30*

I looked at the screen.

“We can discuss your excuses after we stop whoever is doing this.””

Marta nodded.

She continued working.

Then suddenly, she stopped.

“I found something.””

We all moved closer.

“What?””

She pointed at the screen.

“There’s another administrator.””

“Who?””

She clicked.

A name appeared.

My breath caught.

*EVENLYN BENNETT*

My mother.

Except the spelling was wrong.

A small detail.

But important.

“Someone created a fake account using my mother’s name.””

Daniel stared.

“That’s not possible.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because your mother never had access.””

“Then why does the system recognize her?””

He didn’t answer.

Marta opened another file.

“This is the original administrator history.””

The screen filled with dates.

Old dates.

Before the Mirador opened.

Before Daniel became involved.

Before I knew anything was wrong.

The first administrator account belonged to:

*EVELYN BENNETT*

My mother.

The second belonged to:

*CLAIRE BENNETT*

Me.

The third belonged to:

*DANIEL CROSS*

My husband.

I stared.

“Daniel.””

He looked away.

“You told me you were added later.””

“I was.””

“When?””

He hesitated.

“After the first construction phase.””

“That’s not what this says.””

Marta zoomed in.

“He wasn’t added as an employee.””

She pointed.

“He was added as a co-owner.””

My heart dropped.

“No.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Claire, I can explain.””

“No.””

“It wasn’t what you think.””

“You were a co-owner?””

“Yes.””

“Without telling me?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing.

The silence answered.

I stepped away.

Every conversation from the past suddenly sounded different.

Every time he said, “We built this.””

Every time he said, “Our resort.””

Every time he told people he was my partner.

Maybe he wasn’t exaggerating.

Maybe he truly believed he owned it.

Because someone had given him that power.

Someone.

My mother.

“Why?”” I whispered.

Daniel looked at me.

“What?””

“Why would my mother make you a co-owner?””

He looked away.

And that was the moment I knew.

There was still more.

“You know.””

“Claire…”

“You know.””

His face tightened.

“I signed an agreement.””

“With who?””

“Your mother.””

“What agreement?””

He didn’t answer.

The countdown reached:

*04:00*

Marta suddenly shouted.

“Wait!””

We turned.

She pointed at the screen.

“The transfer destination changed.””

My stomach dropped.

“Changed to what?””

She looked at me.

Her face went pale.

“Not Daniel.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

Marta turned the monitor toward us.

The ownership transfer wasn’t going to Daniel.

It wasn’t going to Lena.

It wasn’t going anywhere inside the company.

The destination field showed:

*BENNETT FAMILY TRUST*

I stared.

A family trust.

My family trust.

A trust I had never heard of.

“Does that exist?””

Daniel went silent.

“Daniel.””

His eyes were fixed on the screen.

“Answer me.””

Finally, he whispered:

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“What is it?””

He looked at me.

And I saw something I had never seen before.

Regret.

“The trust your mother created before the Mirador opened.””

“Why?””

He swallowed.

“Because she knew someone would eventually try to take the resort.””

“Who?””

The countdown reached:

*02:45*

Daniel looked at the locked archive door.

Then back at me.

“The person who has been controlling everything from the beginning.””

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he walked toward the wall.

There was a hidden panel beside the archive shelves.

He pressed it.

A small compartment opened.

Inside was a key.

An old metal key.

I stared.

“You knew that was there?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His eyes met mine.

“Because your mother made me promise.””

I froze.

“My mother?””

Daniel picked up the key.

“She told me if the wrong person ever discovered the truth, I had to hide this.””

“What truth?””

He looked at the countdown.

*01:59*

Then he placed the key in my hand.

“Claire, your mother didn’t create the trust to protect the Mirador from outsiders.””

The lights flickered.

The countdown kept falling.

*01:40*

“She created it to protect the Mirador from me.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“Because she knew what I was capable of.””

The countdown reached:

*01:00*

And the archive speaker turned on again.

But this time, it wasn’t Daniel’s voice.

It wasn’t my mother’s.

It was Lena’s.

“Claire?””

I looked up.

Her voice echoed through the room.

“You should have stayed out of the files.””

My blood ran cold.

Daniel looked terrified.

Lena continued:

“But now that you know the truth…”

A pause.

Then:

“I think it’s time you met the real owner of the Mirador.””

The countdown reached:

*00:30*

The archive doors unlocked.

Slowly.

And standing outside the room was not security.

Not my mother.

Not anyone I expected.

It was Lena.

Holding a folder.

And smiling.

“Hello, Claire.””

She lifted the folder.

“I think you’ll want to see who actually signed the first ownership agreement.””

May you like

Then she looked at Daniel.

“And I think you owe your wife an explanation.””
