Chapter 3: The Account That Was Never Mine

The message on my phone kept glowing in the darkness.

*ADMIN ACCESS TRANSFERRED.*

Underneath it was my name.

Claire Bennett.

Owner.

Founder.

Primary administrator.

The title I had fought for.

The title I had earned.

The title that should have made me feel powerful.

Instead, it felt like a stranger had broken into my house and left my name on the front door.

The emergency lights flickered on, painting the office in a dim red glow.

Daniel stood across from me, frozen.

Marta looked like she had seen a ghost.

Nobody spoke.

Because we all understood the same thing.

Someone had just entered the system using my identity.

Someone had made it look like I had done something I never approved.

I looked at Daniel.

“Explain.””

His eyes moved toward the phone in my hand.

“I don’t know.””

The answer came too quickly.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“Claire, I’m serious.””

I laughed once.

A short, bitter sound.

“Daniel, an unknown person just accessed the entire resort system using my name.””

“I didn’t do that.””

“But someone did.””

He looked at Marta.

Then back at me.

“We need to figure out what happened.””

I stared at him.

That sentence would have sounded reasonable coming from anyone else.

But from Daniel?

It sounded like another escape.

For years, whenever something went wrong, he became the person who solved the problem.

The hero.

The fixer.

The man everyone trusted.

But I was beginning to understand something.

Sometimes the person who always offers to fix the fire is the person who knows where the matches are.

Marta walked toward the security panel mounted beside my desk.

“The backup system should never have accepted a remote transfer,” she said.

“Can you reverse it?”” I asked.

She shook her head.

“Not from here.””

“Why?””

“Because whoever did this locked us out.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What do you mean locked us out?””

Marta looked at him.

“You know exactly what I mean.””

The way she said it made my stomach tighten.

Not fear.

Suspicion.

“Marta,” I said quietly, “what aren’t you telling me?””

She hesitated.

Daniel immediately answered.

“Nothing.””

I turned to him.

“I wasn’t asking you.””

His mouth closed.

For once, he had nothing to say.

Marta looked down.

“Ma’am, there’s something else.””

“Tell me.””

She opened her bag again and pulled out another folder.

This one was thinner.

Older.

The edges were worn.

“I found this three weeks ago.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“You found what?””

She placed it on the desk.

“A maintenance access report.””

I opened it.

At first, it looked normal.

Employee login records.

System changes.

Security entries.

Then I saw the date.

Three weeks earlier.

And beside it was an access request.

*Authorization: Claire Bennett.*

I stared at the page.

“That’s impossible.””

Marta nodded.

“I know.””

My voice lowered.

“I was in London three weeks ago.””

Daniel looked away.

That tiny movement told me more than words.

“You knew about this.””

His head snapped back.

“What?””

“You knew.””

“No.””

“You recognized the report.””

“I recognized nothing.””

“Then why did you look away?””

He opened his mouth.

Stopped.

Then he sighed.

“Because I didn’t want to upset you.””

The anger that rose inside me was almost overwhelming.

“You didn’t want to upset me?””

“Claire—”

“You knew someone was using my name inside my own company.””

“I wasn’t sure.””

“You weren’t sure?””

He ran his hand through his hair.

“There were signs.””

“What signs?””

“Small things.””

“Like what?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

And for the first time, I realized something terrifying.

He wasn’t shocked.

He was scared.

There was a difference.

“What signs?”” I repeated.

He walked toward the window.

“When Lena joined the company, she started asking questions.””

“About what?””

“The resort.””

I frowned.

“That’s her job.””

“No.””

His answer was quiet.

“Not like that.””

I waited.

Daniel looked at the lagoon outside.

The water was still.

Beautiful.

Completely unaware of the chaos inside.

“She wasn’t asking about events.””

“Then what was she asking about?””

“Ownership.””

The room became silent.

My heartbeat slowed.

Because I understood.

“She wanted to know how much control I had.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“And?””

“And I told her I had enough.””

I stared at him.

“You told her that?””

“I thought she was just curious.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You wanted her to believe you controlled my resort.””

His silence answered.

I looked at Marta.

“She knew.””

Marta nodded slowly.

“She believed Daniel was the person behind the Mirador.””

A strange sadness washed over me.

Not anger.

Not yet.

Sadness.

Because I remembered all the moments when Daniel stood beside me during interviews.

When reporters asked who created the Mirador.

He always smiled.

He always said:

“We built it together.””

But somewhere along the way, he stopped meaning the word together.

My phone vibrated.

A new message.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

One line.

*You need to leave before you find out what your husband signed.*

My blood went cold.

Daniel saw my expression.

“What is it?””

I didn’t answer.

“Claire.””

I handed him the phone.

He read the message.

His face changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

“You know this number.””

I watched him carefully.

“No.””

“Daniel.””

“I don’t.””

“You do.””

He shook his head.

“You’re wrong.””

I stepped closer.

“Then why do you look terrified?””

He didn’t respond.

Marta moved toward us.

“Ma’am, we need to secure the physical records.””

I looked at her.

“What records?””

“The original ownership documents.””

A cold wave moved through me.

“They’re in my private office.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Marta looked at Daniel.

And again, she hesitated.

I followed her eyes.

“Why are you looking at him?””

No one answered.

Then Marta whispered:

“Because yesterday morning, Daniel requested copies.””

My chest tightened.

“Copies of what?””

“The original ownership agreement.””

I looked at my husband.

“What did you need my documents for?””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“I was preparing for expansion.””

“Without telling me?””

“It was business.””

“No.””

My voice sharpened.

“It was my business.””

He stepped forward.

“Claire, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“You’re thinking emotionally.””

I almost couldn’t believe what I heard.

After everything.

After the affair.

After the money.

After someone stealing my identity.

He still thought the problem was my feelings.

“You think I’m emotional?””

“I think you’re angry.””

“I think you’re right.””

That stopped him.

I pointed at the folder.

“At least one of us should be angry.””

Daniel looked away.

Then the office door opened.

A security employee stood outside.

“Mrs. Bennett?””

“Yes?””

“We have a situation.””

“What situation?””

He swallowed.

“The executive elevator is locked.””

“Okay.””

“And the system says you requested the lockdown.””

I stared at him.

“I did not.””

The employee looked uncomfortable.

“There’s more.””

“What?””

He held up a tablet.

“Your credentials were used to authorize it.””

My stomach dropped.

“Where does it lead?””

He hesitated.

“The executive archive.””

The archive.

The room where we stored the most important company records.

Contracts.

Legal documents.

Financial agreements.

Everything.

I looked at Daniel.

His face had gone completely pale.

“Why?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

Still nothing.

Then Marta whispered:

“Because that’s where the original ownership papers are.””

I walked out of my office.

Daniel followed.

“Claire, wait.””

I didn’t stop.

The hallway was filled with employees trying to understand the outage.

Phones were ringing.

Security teams were moving quickly.

Everyone looked nervous.

But nobody looked more nervous than Daniel.

The elevator doors waited at the end of the hall.

Locked.

A red light blinked above them.

ACCESS DENIED.

I placed my hand against the scanner.

Nothing happened.

Then the screen changed.

A message appeared.

*WELCOME, CLAIRE BENNETT.*

Everyone froze.

The elevator unlocked.

Slowly.

The doors opened.

Inside was darkness.

And on the floor of the elevator was a small envelope.

My name was written on it.

Not printed.

Handwritten.

I picked it up.

Daniel grabbed my arm.

“Don’t open that.””

I looked at his hand around my wrist.

Then at his face.

“Why?””

He released me immediately.

Because he knew.

He knew exactly what was inside.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

A photograph of Daniel.

Standing in front of a lawyer’s office.

Holding documents.

And beside him was the one person I never expected to see.

Not Lena.

Not Marta.

Someone else.

Someone who had been part of my life long before the Mirador existed.

May you like

On the back of the photograph were six words.

*Ask your husband about the first owner.*
