Chapter 4: The Price of Leaving
The email said Daniel wanted shared custody.
I read it three times.
Not because I didn’t understand.
Because I couldn’t believe it.
The man who had missed doctor appointments.
The man who slept through Lily’s first fever.
The man who once told me babies were “mostly the mother’s job.””
Now wanted to fight for equal time.
I called Rachel immediately.
“He’s doing this because he’s angry,” she said.
“I know.””
“You have records, Emily.””
I looked at the notebook on my desk.
The one I had started months ago.
Every forgotten moment.
Every conversation.
Every broken promise.
Proof of a marriage that existed only because I kept carrying it.
The first court meeting was uncomfortable.
Daniel sat across from me wearing a suit.
He looked like the old Daniel.
The charming man everyone loved.
That was his talent.
Making people see the version of him he wanted them to see.
His lawyer spoke first.
“Mr. Carter wants to be more involved in his daughter’s life.””
I almost laughed.
More involved?
He had barely been involved at all.
The judge looked at Daniel.
“Why has your involvement changed recently?””
Daniel looked at me.
Then away.
“I made mistakes.””
The room was quiet.
“I want to correct them.””
For a moment, I almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
Then I remembered standing in that kitchen.
Alone.
After the meeting, Daniel followed me outside.
“Emily, please.””
I stopped walking.
“What?””
“I’m trying.””
I looked at him.
“Trying because you love Lily?””
“Yes.””
“Or trying because you lost control?””
His expression changed.
“That’s unfair.””
I smiled sadly.
“Is it?””
He had no answer.
Weeks passed.
The legal battle became exhausting.
But something unexpected happened.
Daniel started showing up.
Not for court.
For Lily.
At first, I thought it was an act.
But then I saw him sitting on the floor, helping her stack blocks.
I saw him learn how to make her laugh.
I saw him stay awake when she had a nightmare.
And that was the hardest part.
Because a small piece of me wondered:
What if he really changed?
What if the man I waited for finally arrived after I stopped waiting?
One evening, Daniel brought Lily back from a visit.
Before leaving, he stood at the door.
“Emily.””
I looked up.
“I know I don’t deserve another chance.””
I stayed silent.
“But I want one.””
The old me would have cried.
The old me would have remembered our wedding day.
The old me would have searched for any reason to believe him.
But I wasn’t that woman anymore.
“I hope you become a better father,” I said.
His eyes lowered.
“But?””
“But I’m not going backward to find out.””
He nodded.
Then he left.
I closed the door.
And for the first time, I didn’t feel guilty.
I felt free.
Three months later, I thought my biggest battle was over.
I was wrong.
Because one morning, I received a message from Daniel.
Just three words.
“Please come quickly.””
I almost ignored it.
Then another message arrived.
This time, there was a picture attached.
And when I opened it, I realized Daniel’s problem was much bigger than I thought.
May you like
Because the person who had betrayed him…
Was someone I knew.
