Chapter 5: The Secret Behind His Fall

The picture showed a document.

A company transfer agreement.

A signature.

A name.

I stared at the screen.

Because the name at the bottom made my stomach drop.

“Rachel.””

My sister.

I called Daniel immediately.

He answered on the first ring.

“Did you see it?””

“Yes.””

“Emily, I didn’t know.””

I sat down.

“What happened?””

His voice cracked.

“My business partner transferred company funds. Rachel helped him.””

I couldn’t breathe for a moment.

My sister.

The person who had held my hand when I cried.

The person who told me I deserved better.

How could she?

I met Daniel that afternoon.

Not because I forgave him.

Because I needed answers.

He looked broken.

“I know what you’re thinking.””

“What am I thinking?””

“That this is karma.””

I looked at him.

“Maybe part of it is.””

He nodded.

“I deserve that.””

For once, he wasn’t defending himself.

He wasn’t blaming anyone else.

He was simply accepting the damage.

When I confronted Rachel, she didn’t deny it.

That hurt more than anything.

“You knew?”” I whispered.

She looked away.

“I didn’t think it would get this bad.””

I laughed softly.

“You didn’t think?””

She crossed her arms.

“You left him anyway.””

“That doesn’t mean I wanted him destroyed.””

Rachel sighed.

“You don’t understand.””

“No. I understand perfectly.””

She had made a choice.

Just like Daniel had.

Just like everyone who thought my kindness had no limit.

Daniel and I sat across from each other later that night.

The irony wasn’t lost on me.

The two people who hurt me were now sitting in the same storm I had survived.

“I need your help,” he said.

I looked at him.

“You really do.””

“I know.””

The old Daniel would have demanded.

This Daniel asked.

That difference mattered.

But it didn’t erase the past.

He reached into his pocket.

“I know you hate what I did.””

“I don’t hate you.””

He looked surprised.

“I just finally understand that loving someone doesn’t mean saving them from every consequence.””

His eyes filled.

“I lost you because I thought you would always stay.””

I looked at him quietly.

“That was your biggest mistake.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

The next morning, I went to his office.

Not to save him.

Not to rebuild our marriage.

To help uncover the truth.

For Lily.

For myself.

For the woman I had become.

As we reviewed the documents, I noticed something strange.

One transaction didn’t match.

A payment had been made months before the company problems started.

A payment connected to someone outside the business.

I zoomed in.

And my blood ran cold.

Because the name attached to that payment wasn’t Rachel’s.

It wasn’t Daniel’s.

It was someone else.

Someone who had been watching our marriage fall apart from the beginning.

Daniel saw my expression.

“What is it?””

I slowly turned the laptop toward him.

His face changed instantly.

Because he knew the name.

And he whispered:

“No…”

The room went silent.

May you like

Because the person who destroyed his company…

Was the last person either of us expected.
