Chapter 8: The Secret Between Us
I read the message again.
And again.
My first instinct was to delete it.
My second was fear.
Because after everything I had learned, I knew one thing:
Secrets had a way of surviving.
I called the number.
No answer.
I texted back.
“Who are you?””
Nothing.
For two hours.
Then another message appeared.
*“Ask Daniel why he really didn’t take you to the hospital.””*
My hands went numb.
Because suddenly, I remembered that night differently.
Not just what happened.
What didn’t happen.
Daniel had looked at me.
He had seen my pain.
He had heard my fear.
And he had still stayed.
But why?
When Daniel returned to pick up Lily that weekend, I confronted him.
He immediately knew something was wrong.
“What happened?””
I held up my phone.
His expression changed.
“Where did you get that?””
“So it’s true?””
“Emily—”
“Answer me.””
He sat down.
Slowly.
“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””
My heart sank.
“Find out what?””
He was quiet for a long time.
Then he said:
“I was scared.””
I stared at him.
“Scared of what?””
“Losing everything.””
I didn’t understand.
“Daniel.””
He looked at his hands.
“That night, before you went into labor, I received a call from Mark.””
I froze.
“About the company?””
He nodded.
“He told me if I left the presentation unfinished, the deal would collapse.””
I laughed bitterly.
“So you chose the company.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I chose fear.””
Daniel explained.
Mark had convinced him that one missed presentation would destroy everything.
That the company would fail.
That everyone depending on him would suffer.
And Daniel believed him.
“I thought I was protecting our future.””
I stared at him.
“You were protecting your image.””
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
That honesty hurt more than an excuse.
Because I finally understood.
The money on the table wasn’t just cruelty.
It was the final result of years of choosing the wrong thing.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Daniel looked devastated.
“Because I was ashamed.””
I shook my head.
“You let me believe you didn’t care.””
“I know.””
“You let me think my pain meant nothing.””
“I know.””
The room became silent.
Then he whispered:
“I’m sorry.””
This time, the apology felt different.
Not because it fixed anything.
Because it came with the truth.
A week later, something unexpected happened.
I received another message.
This time, from Mark.
He wanted to talk.
I almost refused.
But curiosity won.
We met in a quiet park.
He looked older.
Tired.
“I owe you an apology,” he said.
I crossed my arms.
“You owe me more than that.””
“I know.””
He nodded.
“I destroyed a lot.””
“Yes.””
“But there’s one thing you don’t know.””
I waited.
Mark looked away.
“Daniel wasn’t the only person I manipulated.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
He reached into his bag.
And pulled out a folder.
“I found this after the investigation started.””
I opened it.
Inside were old emails.
Messages.
Documents.
And one name appeared repeatedly.
My name.
I looked at Mark.
“What is this?””
He swallowed.
“Proof that someone else was trying to destroy your marriage.””
My heart raced.
“Who?””
Mark hesitated.
May you like
Then said:
“Someone you trusted.””
