Chapter 2: The Secret Owen Left Behind

The ambulance arrived before my father could decide whether he was sorry.

That was the first thing I noticed.

Not his apology.

Not his panic.

The ambulance.

Because when people finally realize they crossed a line, they usually don't regret hurting you.

They regret getting caught.

I sat in the back of the ambulance while a paramedic checked my blood pressure.

"How far along are you?""

"Thirty-four weeks.""

"Any contractions?""

"Some.""

The paramedic looked at my face.

Then at my hands, scraped from the fall.

"Did you fall?""

I looked toward the house.

Walter stood in the doorway.

He looked smaller now.

Not like a monster.

Just a man who had finally realized the world could see him.

"Yes," I said.

The paramedic followed my eyes.

"Did someone push you?""

I didn't answer.

I didn't need to.

The silence did it for me.

Behind the ambulance doors, I heard Walter's voice.

"Claire, wait.""

I turned.

He walked toward me.

The same man who had dragged me outside.

Now suddenly gentle.

"Sweetheart—"

I almost laughed.

Sweetheart.

A word he hadn't used since before Owen died.

"Don't call me that.""

His face tightened.

"I made a mistake.""

"A mistake?""

Tatum stood behind him.

Watching.

"Your mistake was thinking I would let you steal my home.""

Walter lowered his voice.

"You don't understand the situation.""

"No," I said.

"I understand perfectly.""

The paramedic closed the ambulance door.

The last thing I saw was my father standing beside Tatum.

The two people who had destroyed my life standing inside the home they thought they owned.

At the hospital, everything moved quickly.

Tests.

Monitors.

Questions.

A nurse named Emily held my hand when I started shaking.

"You're safe now.""

I hated that those words made me cry.

Because I wasn't crying from pain.

I was crying because I realized I hadn't felt safe in my own home.

Not for days.

Michael arrived two hours later.

He looked exactly like he always did.

Dark suit.

Gray tie.

A leather folder under his arm.

Owen's best friend since college.

And the only person besides me who knew every detail of Owen's estate.

He sat beside my hospital bed.

"Claire.""

I looked at him.

"What did Owen know?""

Michael hesitated.

That scared me.

"Michael.""

He opened the folder.

"Your husband changed his estate plan six months ago.""

"Why?""

"Because he was worried about your father.""

My heart stopped.

"What?""

Michael looked down.

"Owen noticed things.""

I remembered.

The arguments.

The questions.

The way Owen once said:

"Claire, your dad doesn't love control because he cares. He loves control because he needs to feel powerful.""

I had defended Walter.

I had told Owen he was being unfair.

Now those words came back like a knife.

"What did Owen change?""

Michael pulled out a document.

"He created a protected trust.""

"For the house?""

"For everything.""

I stared at him.

"Everything?""

Michael nodded.

"Owen knew your father might try to challenge ownership after his death.""

I swallowed.

"Why didn't he tell me?""

"Because he hoped he would never need to.""

Michael placed another paper down.

"But he left instructions.""

My hands tightened around the blanket.

"What instructions?""

Michael looked at me.

"He said if anyone attempted to remove you from the house, threaten you, or pressure you into selling, I was to immediately contact the family attorney.""

I stared.

"And?""

"And freeze access to every account connected to Walter Voss.""

I felt cold.

"My father doesn't have access to my accounts.""

Michael gave me a sad look.

"Not yours.""

He tapped the paper.

"His.""

I sat there silently.

Michael continued.

"Your father has been using Owen's company connections for months. Owen discovered unauthorized withdrawals.""

My baby moved.

A tiny kick.

I placed my hand over my stomach.

"He was stealing?""

"We don't know if it was theft legally yet.""

Michael's expression hardened.

"But Owen believed it was.""

A nurse entered.

"Mr. Hayes, visiting hours are almost over.""

Michael stood.

Before leaving, he handed me a phone.

"Your father called me.""

"What did he say?""

Michael looked uncomfortable.

"He said he wants to talk.""

I almost smiled.

"Now he wants to talk?""

"Claire...""

"No.""

I looked out the window.

"No more conversations where he gets to rewrite what happened.""

Michael nodded.

Then he stopped at the door.

"There's one more thing.""

"What?""

"Owen recorded a message for you.""

My breath caught.

"What?""

"He left it with the attorney.""

"When?""

"Before the accident.""

I stared at him.

"Why?""

Michael looked at the folder.

"Because he knew there was something coming.""

That night, after the hospital lights dimmed, I watched Owen's video.

His face appeared on the screen.

My husband.

Alive.

Smiling.

For a second, I forgot everything.

Then he spoke.

"Claire, if you're watching this, something happened that I hoped would never happen.""

My hand covered my mouth.

"I need you to listen carefully.""

The video froze.

Not because it ended.

Because my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man's voice said:

"Mrs. Harper, you need to know what your father just did.""

I sat up.

"Who is this?""

The man paused.

May you like

Then he said:

"I'm the buyer your father found for your house.""
