Chapter 7: The Man Who Thought He Could Escape

My father's voice sounded calm.

That was the first thing that scared me.

Not anger.

Not threats.

Calm.

People like Walter were most dangerous when they believed they were still in control.

"Claire.""

I didn't answer.

He continued.

"I know you're angry.""

I looked at Rebecca.

She nodded slowly, telling me to keep him talking.

"Where are you, Dad?""

A pause.

Then a small laugh.

"Still worried about me?""

"No.""

I looked at the recording evidence sitting on the desk.

"I'm trying to understand why you did this.""

Silence.

Then:

"Because I had to.""

The words made my stomach twist.

"You had to destroy my life?""

"I had to protect what was mine.""

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The truth.

Not regret.

Not guilt.

Ownership.

"You never thought of me as your daughter.""

"Don't say that.""

"You thought of me as something you could control.""

His breathing changed.

"Claire, you don't know the whole story.""

"Then tell me.""

He hesitated.

For the first time, he sounded uncertain.

"Come meet me.""

"No.""

"Please.""

The word shocked me.

My father had never begged.

"I need to explain.""

"You needed to explain before you dragged me onto the porch.""

Silence.

Then he whispered:

"I lost control.""

I laughed bitterly.

"No. You showed me who you are.""

He didn't respond.

I ended the call.

But I knew it wasn't over.

An hour later, Rebecca received confirmation.

Walter had withdrawn money, booked a flight, and attempted to transfer ownership of several assets.

"He knows the walls are closing in," Rebecca said.

Michael looked at the documents.

"How long before authorities act?""

"Depends.""

"On what?""

Rebecca looked at me.

"On whether we can prove intent.""

I knew what she meant.

The recording was powerful.

The financial evidence was powerful.

But my father had spent his life building a reputation.

People trusted him.

People believed him.

I needed more.

And then I remembered something.

The house.

Owen's study.

The place where Walter had dumped everything.

"I need to go back.""

Michael immediately shook his head.

"No.""

"Why?""

"Because it's dangerous.""

I looked at him.

"So is letting him run.""

Rebecca was quiet.

Then she said:

"She's right.""

Michael stared at her.

"Rebecca.""

"We need whatever Owen left behind.""

That evening, we returned to my home.

My home.

The words felt strange.

But they felt right.

The locks had been changed.

Not by me.

By Walter.

That alone made my blood boil.

The officer accompanying us opened the door.

The house smelled different.

Like someone else's life had been forced inside mine.

Tatum's perfume.

Walter's cologne.

Nothing that belonged to Owen.

We went straight to the study.

The room looked destroyed.

But then I noticed something.

The bookshelf.

One section was uneven.

I walked closer.

"Owen.""

Michael looked at me.

"What?""

I touched the shelf.

"He always kept this section organized.""

I pulled.

Nothing.

Then I pushed.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a small box.

Rebecca took a breath.

"That wasn't in the estate records.""

I opened it.

Inside:

A letter.

A USB drive.

And a photograph.

The photograph was of Owen and my father.

Together.

Before everything fell apart.

On the back, Owen had written:

"Proof that people can smile while holding a knife.""

My hands shook as I opened the letter.

Claire,

If you are reading this, I am sorry.

Not because I left.

Because I left you to discover this alone.

I trusted your father for too long.

I wanted to believe I was wrong.

But I wasn't.

The USB drive contains everything.

Everything he did.

Everything I found.

Everything I couldn't tell you yet.

I looked at Michael.

"He knew.""

Rebecca plugged in the drive.

Files appeared.

Hundreds of them.

Financial records.

Messages.

Photos.

Then one folder.

The name made all of us freeze.

"Accident.""

Michael opened it.

Inside was a video.

A security recording.

Date:

The night Owen died.

We watched.

The footage showed the highway.

Owen's car.

The SUV behind him.

Then the SUV moved closer.

Too close.

Michael whispered:

"That's not an accident.""

The video continued.

Then the SUV driver turned.

The camera caught the face.

Not clearly.

But enough.

Enough for me to recognize him.

I stopped breathing.

Because sitting behind the wheel...

was not my father.

It was someone else.

Someone I knew.

Someone who had been standing beside Walter the entire time.

My phone suddenly rang.

Tatum.

I stared at the name.

Then answered.

Her voice was shaking.

"Claire.""

"What?""

"I need you to listen.""

I said nothing.

She whispered:

"Your father doesn't know I found out.""

"Found out what?""

A pause.

May you like

Then:

"Who really killed Owen.""
