Chapter 4: The Evidence Owen Hid
I spent the next morning trying to convince myself that the message was a lie.
Because the alternative was worse.
The alternative was that Owen knew something.
Something serious.
Something dangerous.
And he died before he could tell me.
Michael met me at a coffee shop near my hotel.
He placed a folder on the table.
"I didn't want to show you this until Rebecca confirmed everything.""
"What is it?""
"Owen's investigation.""
My hands froze.
Inside were printed emails.
Financial records.
Photos.
Notes written in Owen's handwriting.
I recognized it immediately.
His neat, careful letters.
The same handwriting that filled birthday cards and grocery lists.
One note said:
"Ask Walter about missing funds.""
Another:
"Do not confront him until Claire is protected.""
I swallowed.
"He was protecting me.""
Michael nodded.
"He loved you.""
I looked away.
Because that was the hardest part.
Owen had been preparing for a battle I didn't know existed.
And I had been angry at him for spending extra time at work.
I thought he was distant.
I thought he was distracted.
He was trying to save me.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Michael looked down.
"Because Owen made me promise.""
"What promise?""
"That if anything happened to him, I would wait until you were safe.""
A tear slipped down my cheek.
"I wasn't safe.""
Michael's face hardened.
"I know.""
At noon, we went back to the house.
Not to enter.
To watch.
A police officer stood nearby because Rebecca had arranged for a civil standby.
Walter was waiting.
The moment he saw me, his expression changed.
Not guilt.
Anger.
"You brought lawyers?""
I looked at him.
"You brought a buyer.""
His face went still.
Tatum stepped outside.
She looked nervous now.
Good.
For the first time, she looked nervous.
Walter lowered his voice.
"Claire, this has gone too far.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"This went too far when you grabbed me.""
"You know I didn't mean—"
"You dragged your pregnant daughter across the floor.""
The officer looked at him.
Walter stopped talking.
Tatum crossed her arms.
"You are making everyone think he's a monster.""
I looked at her.
"You laughed while I was bleeding.""
Her face changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
She remembered.
"I was shocked.""
"No.""
I said it quietly.
"You enjoyed it.""
The front door opened.
A man stepped outside.
Daniel Cross.
The buyer.
Walter looked surprised.
"Why are you here?""
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
"I came to withdraw my offer.""
Walter's face turned red.
"What?""
Daniel looked at me.
"After learning the full situation, I no longer wish to purchase this property.""
Walter stepped toward him.
"You agreed.""
"I agreed based on information you provided.""
The officer moved slightly.
A warning.
Walter stopped.
But his eyes stayed on me.
"You think you've won.""
I stared back.
"No.""
My voice was calm.
"I think you finally understand.""
That night, Rebecca called.
"We found something else.""
"What?""
"A hidden recording.""
I sat up.
"From Owen?""
"Yes.""
My heart raced.
"Where?""
"In the house.""
"How?""
"Your father never found it.""
I held my breath.
"What did Owen record?""
Rebecca was silent.
Then she said:
"Claire, before I tell you, you need to understand something.""
"What?""
"The recording changes the entire case.""
I gripped the phone.
"Why?""
Her answer came softly.
"Because Owen didn't just know your father was stealing.""
May you like
A pause.
"He knew your father was planning something much worse.""
