I Only Came for My PS5 / Chapter 10 / 10

Chapter 10: The Truth My Father Protected

The man standing in front of us looked nothing like the villain I had imagined.

That was the first thing that bothered me.

I expected someone intimidating.

Someone angry.

Someone who looked like the kind of person who would spend years destroying lives.

Instead, he looked tired.

Like he had been carrying a secret for too long.

Tiana’s hand was still wrapped around my arm.

Not because we were close.

Not because everything was forgiven.

Because, for the first time in a long time, we were both afraid of the same thing.

“Who are you?”” I asked.

The man looked at me.

“My name is Samuel.””

I stared at him.

“Samuel what?””

He hesitated.

Then:

“Samuel Carter.””

The name meant nothing.

But Tiana reacted.

Her face changed.

“You.””

Samuel looked at her.

“Yes.””

“You were supposed to be gone.””

The room became silent.

I looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Samuel didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he reached into his coat and pulled out a small envelope.

He placed it on the table nearby.

“Your father trusted me.””

I almost laughed.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Samuel looked at me.

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“My father trusted people who betrayed him.””

His expression softened.

“That’s what he believed too.””

“What?””

Samuel looked down.

“Your father’s greatest mistake was thinking everyone could be saved.””

I didn’t speak.

Because I knew that sounded exactly like him.

My father always believed there was another option.

Another solution.

Another chance.

Even when people didn’t deserve one.

“What is this?”” I asked.

Samuel pushed the envelope toward me.

“Open it.””

I did.

Inside was a single document.

A legal agreement.

At the top were two names.

My father.

And Richard.

But this wasn’t a loan agreement.

It wasn’t a partnership.

It was something else.

My eyes moved down the page.

And then I saw it.

*Beneficial Ownership Transfer Agreement.*

I looked up.

“What is this?””

Samuel took a breath.

“Your father discovered Richard was hiding assets.””

“Assets?””

“Companies. Accounts. Properties. Investments.””

I stared at the document.

“And?””

“And your father built a legal structure to protect those assets from being stolen.””

I frowned.

“By who?””

Samuel looked at me.

“By Richard.””

That didn’t make sense.

“If my father protected them, why does Richard want them?””

“Because your father changed the ownership.””

My heartbeat increased.

“To who?””

Samuel didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

I already knew.

I looked back at the paper.

My name was there.

Not a signature.

Not an accident.

My name.

“The ownership was transferred to me?””

Samuel nodded.

“Years ago.””

I stared at him.

“But I was a kid.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Richard couldn’t take something from someone he didn’t know existed.””

I looked at Tiana.

She looked down.

And suddenly, I understood.

The lies.

The relationship.

The money.

The documents.

Everything.

Tiana wasn’t just a person Richard found.

She was a way in.

“How did he know about me?””

Samuel looked at her.

“Tiana.””

She closed her eyes.

“I told him.””

My chest tightened.

“You told him?””

“Not at first.””

Her voice shook.

“When my father started asking questions about you, I didn’t understand why.””

“Then?””

“Then I found your old documents.””

I stared at her.

“You had my documents.””

“I know.””

She looked ashamed.

“I gave him information because I thought I was protecting myself.””

“And you never thought about what it would do to me?””

She looked like she wanted to answer.

But couldn’t.

Because there was no answer that fixed it.

“I was wrong.””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

Samuel sat down.

For the first time, he looked less like a threat.

More like a witness.

“Your father spent years collecting evidence against Richard.””

“Why didn’t he expose him?””

“Because Richard had protection.””

“From who?””

Samuel looked away.

“People with influence.””

That answer didn’t surprise me.

Power always protected itself.

“But your father found something.””

“What?””

“A record.””

“What record?””

“The original agreements Richard used to hide everything.””

I frowned.

“Where is it?””

Samuel looked at me.

“Your father hid it.””

“Where?””

A small smile appeared on his face.

“You already found it.””

I thought about the flash drive.

The letter.

The storage unit.

“No.””

Samuel nodded.

“Yes.””

“The flash drive?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Samuel pointed at the document in my hand.

“The ownership agreement.””

I looked down.

Nothing seemed special.

Just paper.

A legal document.

“What am I missing?””

“Look at the signature.””

I did.

My father’s signature.

Richard’s signature.

Then another.

Samuel’s.

But underneath my father’s signature was something else.

A handwritten note.

I hadn’t noticed it before.

Because it was almost invisible.

I leaned closer.

Five words.

*The truth is inside.*

My heart stopped.

“Inside what?””

Samuel looked at me.

“Your name.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

“Your father knew Richard would eventually find the agreement.””

“Then why leave it?””

“Because Richard would only see ownership.””

I waited.

“But your father hid the evidence where Richard wouldn’t look.””

I looked at the document.

Then it hit me.

The signature.

The paper.

The agreement itself.

“Hidden ink?””

Samuel nodded.

I grabbed my phone flashlight.

Held it over the page.

At first, nothing happened.

Then slowly…

Words appeared.

A second message.

Written beneath the original document.

My father’s handwriting.

My hands started shaking.

*Marcus,*

*If you are reading this, then Richard has found a way to reach you.*

I swallowed.

The message continued.

*I need you to understand something. The ownership was never about money.*

I looked at Samuel.

Then back at the page.

*Richard spent his life chasing things he could possess. He never understood that the most valuable thing is the truth.*

My eyes burned.

*I didn’t leave you wealth. I left you proof.*

A tear fell onto the paper before I could stop it.

Because that sounded like my father.

Not perfect.

Not fearless.

Just a man trying to protect his son.

*Do not destroy Richard because he hurt you.*

I stopped.

The words surprised me.

*Expose him because people deserve to know who he is.*

The message ended there.

No dramatic warning.

No secret fortune.

No hidden treasure.

Just the truth.

Three months later, everything changed.

The investigation moved quickly once the evidence was released.

The forged documents.

The financial records.

The hidden companies.

The transfers.

Richard’s carefully built world started collapsing.

Not because of revenge.

Because the truth finally had somewhere to go.

Tiana cooperated.

That didn’t erase what she did.

It didn’t erase the pain.

Some wounds don’t disappear just because someone finally admits they caused them.

But she helped expose everything.

And for the first time, she stopped running from what she had done.

Ethan contacted me once.

He apologized.

Not for what happened between us.

But for believing a version of Tiana that hurt me.

I told him something simple.

“We were both lied to.””

And we were.

Different lies.

Same person.

Six months later, I went back to my father’s storage unit.

Not because I needed answers.

Because I finally had them.

I brought the old photograph with me.

The one of my father, Richard, and Samuel.

I looked at it for a long time.

My father had spent years fighting a battle I never knew existed.

And I spent weeks thinking my biggest problem was losing my girlfriend.

I smiled sadly.

Life had a strange way of showing you what mattered.

I still didn’t have everything back.

The money.

The apartment.

The relationship.

Some things were gone forever.

But I had something I didn’t have before.

Clarity.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Tiana.

I stared at her name.

Then opened it.

*Tiana: I know I don’t deserve an answer, but I wanted to say thank you.*

I looked at the screen.

Another message appeared.

*Tiana: For giving me a chance to tell the truth.*

I thought about replying.

For a long time.

Then I typed:

*Marcus: The truth was always going to come out.*

I paused.

Then added:

*It just took losing everything for us to finally see it.*

I put the phone away.

And walked outside.

The sun was setting.

The same world.

The same streets.

But I wasn’t the same person who walked into Tiana’s apartment looking for a PS5.

I went there thinking I was trying to get back something I lost.

A console.

A relationship.

A life.

But I was wrong.

I wasn’t there to get my PS5 back.

I was there to find out who I really was.

May you like

And in the end…

that was the one thing nobody could take from me.
