Chapter 9: The Person Behind Everything

The footsteps stopped.

That was the worst part.

Not hearing someone approach.

Not hearing the door open.

Just silence.

The kind of silence that told you someone was standing there, waiting to see what you would do.

I stood frozen in the storage unit office, my phone still pressed against my ear.

“Daniel.””

No response.

The call had dropped.

I looked at the screen.

No signal.

Of course.

I stared at the door.

The only entrance.

The only exit.

For the first time in days, I wasn’t thinking about Tiana.

Not the cheating.

Not the money.

Not the lies.

I was thinking about survival.

I grabbed the flash drive from the computer.

The letter.

The photograph.

Everything went into my pocket.

Then I moved.

Quietly.

The storage unit had a second exit through the back hallway.

I remembered because my father once showed it to me when I was a kid.

“Always know two ways out of a place,” he had said.

At the time, I thought it was just one of his strange life lessons.

Now I understood.

My father had spent years preparing for threats I never knew existed.

I reached the back door.

My hand touched the handle.

Then I heard a voice behind me.

“Marcus.””

I froze.

Not because I recognized the voice.

Because I did.

Richard.

I turned slowly.

He stood at the entrance of the office.

Calm.

No anger.

No panic.

Just the same controlled expression he had worn in the hallway.

The expression of someone who believed he already knew how the conversation would end.

“You really are your father’s son.””

I said nothing.

His eyes moved to my hand.

“You found the box.””

I tightened my grip.

“How long have you known about it?””

Richard smiled slightly.

“That’s the wrong question.””

“What’s the right one?””

He stepped closer.

“The right question is why your father never trusted you enough to tell you the truth.””

That hit harder than I expected.

Because it was the one thing I had been wondering myself.

Why didn’t my father tell me?

Why did he leave me clues instead of answers?

Richard noticed the hesitation.

And he used it.

“You see?””

He spread his hands.

“Even now, you’re defending him.””

“I’m not defending anyone.””

“Your father lied to you.””

I stared at him.

“So did you.””

His smile disappeared.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

“You think you understand what happened.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I think I’m finally understanding what you wanted me to believe.””

Richard looked at me carefully.

Then he laughed.

A quiet laugh.

“Smart.””

I hated that word coming from him.

“Where’s Tiana?””

The question surprised him.

Or maybe he wanted me to think it did.

“Why?””

“Because she warned me.””

His expression changed.

“What did she say?””

I didn’t answer.

Richard took another step.

“Marcus.””

His voice became softer.

“That girl has caused enough damage.””

There it was.

The shift.

The victim.

The disappointed father.

The person who had been forced into this situation.

I remembered my father’s warning.

*He will make himself look like the victim.*

“You mean the damage she caused while working for you?””

The silence afterward was my answer.

Richard’s face hardened.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“Then tell me.””

I stepped forward.

“Tell me why my signature is on fake documents.””

No reaction.

“Tell me why my money disappeared.””

Nothing.

“Tell me why my father wrote that you couldn’t be trusted.””

That one landed.

His eyes changed.

A flash of anger.

Gone almost instantly.

But enough.

“You found the letter.””

“Yes.””

“And the video?””

I said nothing.

He nodded slowly.

“So you know.””

“Know what?””

“That your father ruined everything.””

I almost laughed.

“You still believe that?””

“I know that.””

Richard’s voice became sharper.

“Your father took something from me.””

“What?””

He stared at me.

“Everything.””

I waited.

But he didn’t explain.

Because people like Richard never started with facts.

They started with emotions.

They wanted you to feel before you thought.

“He was my partner,” Richard said.

“And?””

“And he betrayed me.””

“How?””

Richard looked away.

For the first time, I saw something different.

Not anger.

Pain.

Real or fake, I couldn’t tell.

“He destroyed my company.””

I shook my head.

“My father exposed your company.””

Richard looked back at me.

“You believe that?””

“I believe the evidence.””

He smiled sadly.

“Your father always knew how to make himself look innocent.””

I stared at him.

“And you always knew how to make yourself look like the victim.””

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then Richard reached into his jacket.

My body tensed.

But he only pulled out his phone.

He tapped the screen.

Then held it toward me.

A photo.

Tiana.

Sitting in a car.

She looked terrified.

My heart dropped.

“What did you do?””

Richard lowered the phone.

“Nothing.””

“Where is she?””

“She came to me.””

I didn’t believe him.

“You threatened her.””

His silence said enough.

“She tried to leave,” Richard said.

“She tried to fix what she did.””

“And you stopped her.””

“I protected my family.””

I stared at him.

“Family?””

I shook my head.

“You don’t protect people by destroying them.””

Richard’s face became cold.

“You’re young.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“I just spent two years with someone who learned everything from you.””

That angered him.

Finally.

“You have no idea what you’re saying.””

“Maybe.””

I looked at the phone.

“But I know what I see.””

I pointed at him.

“A man who uses people.””

His expression went blank.

“And a daughter who finally realized it.””

An hour later, I found Tiana.

Not because Richard helped me.

Because she had left clues.

Daniel and I tracked the location from the photo.

An abandoned office building on the edge of town.

The kind of place nobody visited unless they wanted to disappear.

When I walked inside, I found her sitting on the floor.

Alone.

No makeup.

No perfect appearance.

No confidence.

Just Tiana.

The person I remembered.

The person I missed.

And the person who hurt me.

She looked up.

“Marcus.””

I stopped several feet away.

“Are you okay?””

She laughed softly.

It wasn’t happy.

“No.””

I nodded.

“Good.””

Her eyes filled.

“I deserve that.””

I didn’t answer.

Because part of me agreed.

And part of me hated that I did.

“Your father was here.””

Her face changed.

“He found you?””

“Yes.””

She closed her eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked away.

“Stop saying that.””

“Why?””

“Because you keep using it like it fixes things.””

She looked down.

“I know.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I know I destroyed everything.””

“Why?””

She cried quietly.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

“My father.””

I waited.

“He controlled everything.””

She wiped her face.

“When I was younger, I thought he was just strict.””

She laughed bitterly.

“Then I realized he didn’t want a daughter.””

“What did he want?””

“A tool.””

The word stayed between us.

“I thought if I helped him, he would leave me alone.””

“And he didn’t.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“He just found more ways to use me.””

I believed that.

But belief wasn’t forgiveness.

Not yet.

“What was the plan?””

She looked confused.

“What?””

“The money.””

Her eyes dropped.

“I was supposed to transfer it.””

“To where?””

“I don’t know.””

I stared.

“Again?””

“I’m telling the truth.””

She took a breath.

“He told me there was something your father left behind. Something worth more than money.””

“The ownership.””

She looked at me.

“You know.””

“Yes.””

Her face changed.

“Then you know why he needed you.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because Richard couldn’t access it.””

“Why not?””

She looked terrified.

“Because your father made sure only you could.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What is it?””

“I don’t know.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because my father never told me.””

She stood slowly.

“But I know one thing.””

“What?””

She looked directly at me.

“He wasn’t after your money.””

I waited.

“He was after your name.””

Before I could ask what she meant, the lights in the building shut off.

Every single one.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Tiana grabbed my arm.

“Marcus.””

A sound echoed from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Coming closer.

Not Richard.

Someone else.

Then a voice spoke from the darkness.

A voice I had never heard before.

“Robert should have destroyed that evidence.””

My blood ran cold.

Because whoever this person was…

They knew my father.

And they knew exactly what we had found.

The figure stepped closer.

And when the emergency light flickered on, I saw the face.

The third person in the photograph.

The man who started everything.

He looked at me.

And said:

“Your father didn’t leave you ownership, Marcus.””

A pause.

“He left you a choice.””

I stared at him.

“What choice?””

The man smiled.

“The choice of whether you want the truth.””

He looked at Tiana.

“Because once you know everything…”

May you like

His expression darkened.

“You can never go back.””
