Chapter 3: The Account She Hid

“Marcus, you need to listen carefully because if Tiana finds out I contacted you, she’s going to destroy the evidence.””

The first thing I noticed was his voice.

Not the words.

The voice.

Daniel didn’t sound like a man trying to start drama.

He sounded scared.

I sat up on the edge of the bed, holding the phone tighter against my ear.

“What evidence?””

There was a pause.

Long enough for me to hear my own breathing.

“Are you alone?””

I looked around Devin’s guest room.

The dark walls.

The half-open closet.

The box of clothes I had brought over two weeks ago.

“Yeah.””

“Good.””

I heard him exhale.

“Marcus, how long were you and Tiana together?””

The question irritated me.

Not because it mattered.

Because everyone suddenly wanted to know details about my relationship after they had already stepped on it.

“Two years.””

Another pause.

“Two years.””

The way he repeated it made my stomach tighten.

“What?””

“Nothing.””

“No. Say it.””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he said quietly, “She told me she had been single for almost a year.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course she did.

Of course that was the story.

Everyone got their own version of Tiana.

I got the girlfriend who said she was tired of fighting.

Ethan got the woman who said she was finally free.

Daniel apparently got something else.

“How long have you known her?”” I asked.

“Six months.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Six months.””

“Yes.””

“And when did she tell you about me?””

“She didn’t.””

The room felt colder.

“She didn’t tell you I existed?””

“No.””

I stood up and started pacing.

“So what exactly are you calling me about?””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“The apartment account.””

I stopped.

“What about it?””

“Did you and Tiana have a joint savings account?””

My throat tightened.

“Yes.””

“How much was in it?””

I didn’t answer immediately.

Not because I didn’t know.

Because I already knew I wasn’t going to like where this conversation was going.

“About eighteen thousand dollars.””

Silence.

Then Daniel said something that made my entire body go still.

“That money is gone.””

I stared at the wall.

“What?””

“It’s gone, Marcus.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

“No, that’s not possible.””

I grabbed my phone and opened my banking app.

My fingers moved faster than my thoughts.

The account appeared.

The balance loaded.

And for a few seconds, I couldn’t process what I was seeing.

$42.18.

That was it.

I refreshed.

Same number.

Again.

Same number.

My mind started racing.

I remembered the last conversation Tiana and I had about that money.

Three months ago.

We were sitting at the kitchen table, planning our future.

A house.

A wedding.

A life.

She had rested her chin on her hand and smiled.

“We’re actually doing this.””

I smiled back.

“Doing what?””

“Building something.””

I believed her.

That was the worst part.

I believed her.

“What happened to it?”” I asked.

Daniel was quiet.

Then:

“She moved it.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Moved it where?””

“I don’t know everything yet.””

“You called me and you don’t know?””

“I called because I know enough.””

I hated how calm he sounded.

Because I wasn’t calm.

I was trying not to break something.

“Tell me.””

Daniel sighed.

“I met Tiana six months ago. She told me she was going through a breakup. She said she was trying to get away from someone controlling.””

I almost laughed.

Controlling.

That word.

The word people used when they wanted to make themselves the victim.

“What else?””

“She told me she needed help getting her finances organized.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What?””

“She said her ex had access to her accounts. She said she was afraid you would take her money.””

I felt something heavy settle in my chest.

“I never touched her money.””

“I know.””

“How?””

“Because I checked.””

I stopped walking.

“You checked?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Another pause.

Then Daniel answered honestly.

“Because I started realizing some of her stories didn’t add up.””

That was the first thing he said all night that made sense.

“How did you find me?””

Daniel hesitated.

“I saw your name.””

“Where?””

“In a document.””

“What document?””

A silence.

Then:

“A transfer form.””

My heart started pounding.

“What transfer form?””

“Marcus, before I explain, I need you to understand something.””

“What?””

“I’m not calling because I care about getting involved in your breakup.””

“Then why?””

“Because I think Tiana used both of us.””

The words hung there.

Used both of us.

I looked down at the floor.

For two weeks, I had been replaying everything.

Every argument.

Every strange moment.

Every time she turned her phone away.

Every time she said she needed space.

I thought she was leaving me.

But what if she was preparing something?

“What transfer form?”” I asked again.

Daniel finally answered.

“A form transferring ownership of the apartment.””

My body went still.

“What?””

“The apartment.””

“That apartment is rented.””

“No.””

My heart skipped.

“What?””

“No, Marcus.””

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“She told me she owned it.””

I stared at the wall.

The apartment.

The place I had paid half the rent for.

The place where my name was on the utility bills.

The place where I had spent two years building a life.

“You’re saying she told you she owned the apartment?””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“I thought so too.””

My hand moved through my hair.

“Why would she lie about that?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

He didn’t have to.

Because I already knew.

Money.

Security.

Control.

The pieces were starting to connect.

But one piece still didn’t fit.

“Why are you helping me?””

Daniel didn’t speak.

Not for several seconds.

Then he said:

“Because I found out she was planning to marry me.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She asked me last month.””

My mouth went dry.

“She asked you?””

“Yes.””

I sat back down.

The room suddenly felt too small.

“Tiana was planning to marry you?””

“Yes.””

“And she was still with me?””

“Yes.””

I covered my face with my hand.

A thousand thoughts collided.

Then I heard Daniel say something else.

Something that made all of them disappear.

“She wasn’t planning to marry me because she loved me.””

I lowered my hand.

“What do you mean?””

“She needed my name.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She told me she was in trouble financially. She said she needed someone stable. Someone who could help her start over.””

I felt sick.

“Daniel…”

“I know.””

His voice cracked.

“I feel stupid.””

I didn’t respond.

Because I understood.

Not the same way.

But enough.

The worst part about betrayal wasn’t discovering someone lied.

It was realizing how much of yourself you had given to someone who was keeping score.

“What does she want with your name?””

Daniel took a deep breath.

“That’s what I was trying to figure out.””

“And?””

“And then I found the paperwork.””

“What paperwork?””

“The one with your name on it.””

My heart started pounding again.

“What paperwork?””

A pause.

Then:

“Marcus, I need you to meet me tomorrow.””

“Why?””

“Because I have copies.””

“Copies of what?””

Daniel went quiet.

Then he said:

“Your signature.””

I felt a chill move through me.

“My signature?””

“Yes.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“I know.””

“No. You don’t understand.””

I stood up again.

“I haven’t signed anything.””

Daniel’s voice became almost a whisper.

“That’s the problem.””

The rain outside got louder.

Or maybe I was just finally hearing it.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying someone signed your name.””

My stomach dropped.

“Who?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

And somehow, that scared me more than if he had.

Because whoever it was…

He already knew.

“Daniel.””

Finally, he spoke.

“I think Tiana has been preparing this for months.””

I looked at my phone.

At the time.

At the empty room.

At the life that suddenly felt like it belonged to someone else.

Then Daniel said the sentence that changed everything.

“Marcus, before you confront her, you need to understand one thing.””

“What?””

“She’s not afraid you’ll find out she cheated.””

I waited.

“She’s afraid you’ll find out what she did after that.””

The call ended.

I stood there holding the phone.

Unable to move.

Unable to think.

Then my screen lit up.

A new message.

From Tiana.

For the first time all night, she wasn’t apologizing.

She wasn’t asking me to listen.

She wasn’t pretending.

The message was only seven words.

*Tiana: We need to talk about the account.*

I stared at it.

Because I hadn’t told her I knew.

I hadn’t told anyone.

Except Daniel.

And suddenly, I realized something.

Daniel wasn’t the only person watching.

Someone had already warned her.

May you like

And whoever that person was…

They were much closer to me than I thought.
