Chapter 1: The Christmas Secret

My seven-year-old son exposed my wife’s secret without realizing he had just shattered our family.

It happened on Christmas morning, under the warm glow of the tree lights, while I was still believing I had the perfect life.

I thought the biggest surprise that day would be Ethan’s excitement over his presents. I thought the biggest problem would be cleaning up wrapping paper before my mother arrived for dinner.

I was wrong.

Ethan sat on the carpet surrounded by torn boxes, laughing as his new remote-control truck crashed into the legs of our coffee table. Tasha sat beside him with a smile that looked natural enough.

Almost.

“Careful, buddy,” I said, laughing.

“You’re going to destroy the house before breakfast.””

Ethan looked up at me with the same bright eyes he had inherited from his mother.

“Dad, look! It goes really fast.””

“I know,” I said.

“That’s why I bought it.””

He jumped up and wrapped his little arms around my waist.

“Thanks, Dad!””

I smiled and hugged him back.

Then he said something that made my smile disappear.

“Uncle Andre said I’d like this one too.””

At first, I thought I had misheard him.

I looked down.

“Who’s Uncle Andre?””

The room changed instantly.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just enough for me to notice.

Tasha’s hand stopped moving. Her smile faded. The cheerful expression she had worn all morning vanished like someone had switched off a light.

“Ethan,” she said quickly, “go play with your truck, okay?””

My son frowned.

“But I’m telling Dad about Uncle Andre.””

I looked at my wife.

“Who is Andre?””

She stood slowly.

“He’s just someone from work.””

“Someone from work knows what toy our son likes?””

Her eyes moved away from mine.

“He’s been around the office. Ethan has met him a few times.””

Ethan pushed his truck forward.

“Mommy’s friend.””

I felt something tighten in my chest.

“What friend?””

Tasha crossed the room.

“Marcus, don’t do this in front of him.””

“Do what?””

She lowered her voice.

“Turn this into something it isn’t.””

I stared at her.

“I’m asking a simple question.””

Ethan looked between us.

Children notice everything.

Even when they don’t understand anything.

“When does Uncle Andre come over?”” I asked.

Ethan shrugged.

“When you’re at work.””

The Christmas lights blinked behind him.

Red.

Green.

Red.

Green.

Each flash felt like a countdown.

“When exactly?””

“Sometimes at night.””

Tasha moved quickly.

“Ethan, sweetheart, why don’t you show Dad your new game?””

“No,” I said.

My voice surprised even me.

I held up my hand.

“Let him answer.””

Ethan looked confused.

“Why are you mad?””

That question hurt more than anything.

Because he didn’t know.

He wasn’t hiding anything.

He was just a child describing his normal life.

“I’m not mad at you,” I said softly.

Then I looked at Tasha.

“Keep going, Ethan.””

He sat down beside his truck.

“Uncle Andre came Friday too.””

My stomach dropped.

Friday.

I remembered Friday perfectly.

I had worked late because my team had a deadline. I had called Tasha around nine.

She had sounded tired.

“I’m exhausted,” she had told me.

“I’m going to shower and go straight to bed.””

I had believed her.

I had even apologized for not being home.

“Friday?”” I asked.

Tasha’s face lost color.

“Marcus, you’re misunderstanding.””

“Was Andre here Friday?””

“He stopped by.””

“Why?””

“He needed something.””

“What?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Ethan continued playing.

“Mommy told me not to tell you because you would be surprised.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Tell me what?””

Tasha rushed forward.

“Ethan, honey, that’s enough.””

I stepped between them.

“No.””

The word came out colder than I intended.

“No more secrets.””

Ethan looked up at me.

“He slept in your room, Mommy.””

Silence.

The kind of silence where you can hear the refrigerator humming from the kitchen.

I stared at my wife.

My wife.

The woman I had loved for eleven years.

The woman I had built a home with.

“In our bedroom?””

She grabbed my arm.

“Marcus, please.””

I looked down at her hand.

Then at her face.

“Please what?””

“Let me explain.””

I slowly pulled away.

My son was still holding his toy truck, completely unaware that he had just opened a door that could never be closed again.

I looked into Tasha’s terrified eyes.

“Then start explaining who Andre really is.””

She didn’t answer.

And that scared me more than any confession could have.

Because my wife wasn’t trying to prove I was wrong.

She was trying to decide how much truth she could survive telling me.

Then her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

May you like

And I saw the name.

*Andre.*
