Chapter 8: The Enemy Who Smiled

I didn’t believe Daniel at first.

Not completely.

Because believing him meant accepting something impossible.

That the man who had helped my wife.

The man who claimed he was protecting us.

The man everyone kept mentioning…

Was actually the person destroying us.

I took the flash drive home.

I didn’t tell Tasha.

Not yet.

I needed to know the truth without anyone guiding me toward it.

I opened the files on my laptop.

The first document was an email.

From Andre.

To someone named Victor.

The message was short.

*The pressure is working. Marcus is questioning her. Keep the brother involved. It will accelerate the collapse.*

My hands went cold.

The brother.

Daniel.

He had been part of Andre’s plan.

But not as a criminal.

As a weapon.

I opened another file.

Financial records.

Transfers.

Payments.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Victor.

My father’s former partner.

Andre’s father.

Then I found something worse.

A recording.

I pressed play.

Andre’s voice filled the room.

“Tasha, you need to understand. Marcus will never accept the truth unless everything falls apart first.””

My breathing stopped.

Her voice answered.

“What are you saying?””

Andre replied:

“I’m saying sometimes people need to lose everything before they see who is loyal.””

I closed the laptop.

My hands were shaking.

Tasha walked in.

“What happened?””

I looked at her.

“Did Andre ever say he wanted us to separate?””

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“Marcus…”

“Did he?””

She sat down.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

“When?””

“Months ago.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t believe him.””

I stared.

“But you kept seeing him.””

“Because I needed his help.””

“For what?””

She looked at me.

“For evidence.””

I froze.

“What?””

She took a breath.

“I knew something was wrong with Andre.””

“Since when?””

“Since he started asking questions about you.””

“What kind of questions?””

“Your finances. Your job. Your relationship with Daniel.””

I looked at the laptop.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because every time I tried, something happened.””

“What?””

She counted on her fingers.

“The house investigation. The legal threats. The messages.””

“You thought someone was watching you.””

“Yes.””

I believed her.

Because suddenly everything connected.

Andre wasn’t creating chaos.

He was controlling it.

That night, we met Daniel.

The three of us sat in my father’s old storage building.

The place where Daniel had kept everything after leaving.

He opened a box.

Inside were documents.

Photos.

Old records.

“I spent five years proving I wasn’t guilty,” he said.

I looked at him.

“Why didn’t you come back?””

He smiled sadly.

“Because nobody wanted the truth.””

That hurt.

Because he was right.

I had chosen a comfortable lie.

Daniel handed me another file.

“This is the final piece.””

I opened it.

A property transfer.

The house.

My house.

The signature wasn’t mine.

It wasn’t Tasha’s.

It was Victor’s.

And beneath it…

Was Andre’s.

I looked up.

“He planned to take our house?””

Daniel nodded.

“Not just your house.””

“What else?””

“Everything your father left behind.””

I looked at the documents.

Then I saw the date.

The agreement had been created six months ago.

The exact time Andre became close to Tasha.

I felt sick.

“He used her.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“He used all of us.””

The next day, Andre called me.

I answered.

“Marcus.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“You found something.””

It wasn’t a question.

“How did you know?””

A small laugh.

“Because you’re predictable.””

My grip tightened.

“You planned this.””

“No.””

“Don’t lie.””

“I gave your wife choices.””

“You tried to destroy my marriage.””

“I tried to reveal what was already broken.””

My anger exploded.

“You don’t know anything about my marriage.””

Andre became quiet.

Then he said:

“You’re right.””

A pause.

“That’s why I’m sending you the video.””

“What video?””

“You’ll understand why Tasha could never tell you.””

The message arrived seconds later.

One video file.

I opened it.

And my blood ran cold.

Because the person in the video was my father.

May you like

Alive.

Five years after everyone thought he died.
