Chapter 7: The Night Everything Changed

I didn’t ask Tasha immediately.

That surprised me.

Five years ago, I would have demanded answers.

I would have raised my voice.

I would have wanted the truth instantly.

But after everything that happened, I learned something.

People reveal more when they think you’re listening.

Not when they think they’re defending themselves.

That night, I made dinner for Ethan.

Something normal.

Something familiar.

Mac and cheese.

The same meal I had made hundreds of times.

Ethan sat at the kitchen table watching me.

“Dad?””

“Yeah?””

“Are you and Mommy getting divorced?””

The question hit harder than anything Daniel had said.

I sat beside him.

“Why would you ask that?””

“Because Grandma said adults sometimes stop loving each other.””

I looked down.

Children hear everything.

Even whispers.

“I don’t know what will happen,” I said honestly.

His eyes filled.

“Did I do something wrong?””

“No.””

“Because I told you about Uncle Andre?””

I shook my head.

“Ethan, you did the right thing.””

“But Mommy was scared.””

I looked at him.

“How do you know?””

“Because she cried after you left.””

My chest tightened.

After dinner, I put Ethan to bed.

I waited until his breathing slowed.

Then I went downstairs.

Tasha was sitting alone.

The same place where we had started this nightmare.

“Tell me about the night before my father died.””

She closed her eyes.

I knew immediately.

She knew exactly which night.

“Daniel called you.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“He did?””

“You knew he would?””

Her face changed.

“Marcus…”

“Answer me.””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

I felt something break inside.

“How?””

“Because I was there.””

I stared at her.

“Where?””

“At your father’s office.””

The room became silent.

“You were there?””

She nodded.

“I was younger. I was scared. Your father had asked me to come.””

“Why?””

“Because he knew something was wrong.””

I stepped closer.

“What?””

She took a shaky breath.

“Your father discovered money missing from the company.””

“From Daniel?””

“No.””

Her answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

“Then who?””

She looked at me.

“The person who had access to everything.””

My mind raced.

“My father’s partner?””

She nodded.

“Andre’s father.””

I sat down.

The story I had believed for years began changing shape.

“My father blamed Daniel.””

“He thought Daniel did it.””

“But he was wrong?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did Daniel leave?””

Tasha’s eyes filled.

“Because your father confronted him.””

“What happened?””

“He told Daniel that he would never forgive him.””

I looked away.

I remembered Daniel crying that night.

I remembered him saying he didn’t do anything.

I remembered not believing him.

Because Dad believed he was guilty.

And I trusted Dad.

“He left because he thought everyone had abandoned him,” Tasha whispered.

I rubbed my forehead.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because your father made me promise.””

My head snapped up.

“What?””

“He said if I told anyone, he would make sure Daniel went to prison.””

I stared at her.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“It isn’t.””

She walked to the cabinet.

She pulled out an old envelope.

Inside was a letter.

A handwritten letter.

From my father.

I read it.

The words were short.

But they destroyed me.

*Tasha, protect my sons from each other. The truth will hurt them both.*

I looked at her.

“Why did you keep this?””

“Because I failed.””

“What do you mean?””

She cried.

“I thought I could fix everything.””

The next morning, Daniel came to meet me.

We sat in an empty parking lot.

For the first time in five years, my brother and I were face to face.

He looked older.

Tired.

But still like the person I remembered.

“You know now,” he said.

I nodded.

“I know some of it.””

He looked away.

“I didn’t betray Dad.””

“I know.””

His eyes lifted.

“You believe me?””

The question hurt.

Because I realized how long he had waited to hear it.

“Yes.””

He swallowed.

Then he handed me a flash drive.

“What is this?””

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

He looked at me.

“That Andre isn’t helping your wife.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He’s helping himself.””

I stared at the drive.

“What’s on it?””

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“Records showing Andre planned all of this.””

My hands tightened.

“All of what?””

May you like

Daniel looked directly at me.

“Your divorce.””
