Chapter 2: Two Cakes and a Warning

Nobody moved.

Not when my father walked toward Daniel.

Not when Daniel raised his hands in confusion.

Not when Margaret’s smile disappeared.

Dad held the cake calmly, almost peacefully.

That was what scared everyone.

My father had always been a quiet man.

He wasn’t the type to scream.

He wasn’t the type to threaten.

But he was the type of man who could make an entire room silent with one look.

Daniel laughed nervously.

“Mr. Hayes, what are you doing?””

Dad stared at him.

“What did you do to my daughter?””

Daniel glanced around.

“It was a joke.””

Dad’s jaw tightened.

“A joke?””

“Yes.””

Dad looked at the cake in his hand.

“Interesting.””

Then, before Daniel could react, my father pushed the cake straight into his face.

The sound of frosting hitting skin was louder than anyone expected.

The room froze.

Daniel stumbled backward, covered in white icing.

The laughter was gone.

Completely gone.

Dad turned and picked up the second cake.

Margaret took a step back.

“Robert, don’t you dare.””

Dad looked at her.

“You laughed the loudest.””

Her face changed.

“I was just having fun.””

Dad walked closer.

“You watched my daughter get humiliated on her birthday and called it fun.””

Margaret’s mouth opened.

Then closed.

A second later, the second cake landed on her face.

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Nobody laughed.

Nobody even breathed loudly.

Dad placed the empty cake box on the table.

Then he looked at Daniel and Margaret.

“These cakes were not a joke.””

Daniel wiped frosting from his eyes.

“You embarrassed me in my own house.””

Dad’s expression didn’t change.

“Your house?””

He looked around.

“This is my daughter’s home too.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You can’t just walk in here and attack people.””

Dad smiled slightly.

“Funny.””

He pointed toward me.

“Your wife couldn’t say that when you attacked her.””

The room became uncomfortable.

Because everyone knew he was right.

I stood there watching the man who had spent my entire life protecting me finally defend me when I needed him most.

Dad turned to me.

“Emily.””

I looked at him.

“Are you okay?””

That simple question almost broke me.

Not “Why are you upset?””

Not “Can’t you take a joke?””

Not “You’re embarrassing everyone.””

Just:

Are you okay?

I nodded, but my eyes burned.

“I don’t know.””

Dad walked toward me.

“You don’t have to know yet.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“So this is what we’re doing? Making me the villain because of cake?””

Dad looked at him.

“No.””

He glanced at Margaret.

“The cake was only proof.””

Daniel frowned.

“Proof of what?””

Dad reached into his coat pocket.

My stomach dropped.

Because I knew that look.

Dad had come prepared.

He pulled out a folder.

Margaret’s expression changed.

“What is that?””

Dad placed it on the table.

“Something my daughter deserves to see.””

I looked at him.

“Dad?””

He nodded.

“Open it.””

My hands shook as I picked up the folder.

Inside were printed documents.

Bank statements.

Emails.

Property records.

At first, I didn’t understand.

Then I saw Daniel’s name.

My heart stopped.

“What is this?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Daniel.

His face had gone pale.

“Daniel?””

He didn’t speak.

Dad did.

“Ask your husband why he has been hiding money from you for the past eighteen months.””

The room erupted.

“What?””

I turned toward Daniel.

“What did he mean?””

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“Emily, listen—”

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

“Answer.””

He looked around.

The confident man who had laughed five minutes ago was gone.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

He swallowed.

“I just needed more time.””

Dad looked at him.

“More time before you left her with nothing?””

Daniel’s silence was an answer.

I felt the room spinning.

The cake on my face suddenly seemed like a small wound compared to the one opening inside my chest.

Margaret stepped forward.

“You’re misunderstanding.””

I looked at her.

“Are you involved?””

She didn’t answer quickly enough.

And that was all I needed.

My father closed the folder.

“Emily, there’s more.””

I stared at him.

“More?””

Dad looked at Daniel.

Then at Margaret.

“There’s something else they didn’t want you to know.””

Daniel’s face turned completely white.

May you like

Because whatever was coming next…

He was afraid of it.
