Chapter 8: The Choice Nobody Expected

For two days, I barely slept.

Everyone expected me to hate Daniel.

Maybe I should have.

He lied.

He betrayed me.

He helped his mother hurt me.

But hatred was simple.

And what I felt wasn’t simple.

Because underneath the anger was grief.

I wasn’t mourning my marriage.

I was mourning the person I thought I married.

On the third morning, my father found me sitting in the backyard.

“You haven’t eaten.””

I looked at him.

“I’m not hungry.””

Dad sat beside me.

“You don’t have to save him.””

I looked down.

“I know.””

“You’re allowed to choose yourself.””

I nodded.

But my mind kept returning to one thing.

Margaret wanted me to choose.

She wanted me trapped.

And I hated giving her that power.

That afternoon, I called Daniel.

“Meet me.””

When he arrived, he looked exhausted.

“I know what you’re thinking.””

I stopped him.

“No.””

He looked surprised.

“I’m not here to forgive you.””

His expression fell.

“I understand.””

“I’m here because I want to know everything.””

Daniel nodded.

So he told me.

Everything.

He told me how Margaret convinced him that I would never truly love him if I had more money than him.

He told me how she planted doubts.

How she made him believe I would leave him.

How she slowly turned his insecurity into betrayal.

And then he said the one thing I never expected.

“I hated myself before you ever found out.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because every day I looked at you and knew what I was doing.””

He wiped his face.

“I watched you make dinner. I watched you laugh. I watched you trust me.””

His voice broke.

“And I knew I was destroying it.””

I stayed quiet.

Because apologies were easy.

Actions were harder.

“Why didn’t you stop?””

He looked at me.

“I was afraid.””

“Of her?””

“Yes.””

That answer surprised me.

“She controlled you.””

“Yes.””

I looked away.

“And you let her.””

“I did.””

For once, he didn’t hide.

That mattered.

But it didn’t erase what happened.

I stood.

“I need you to understand something.””

He looked at me.

“I can’t fix what you broke.””

He nodded.

“But I can help you stop her.””

Daniel looked up.

“You’ll help me?””

“I’m helping myself.””

I took a breath.

“But if Margaret wants a fight, she’s going to get one.””

The next morning, my father’s attorney filed documents.

Not against Daniel.

Against Margaret.

Because Dad had discovered something.

Margaret had been using Daniel’s name in several illegal financial agreements.

She thought she was protecting herself.

Instead, she left evidence everywhere.

For the first time, she wasn’t controlling the game.

She was losing it.

That evening, Margaret called me.

I answered.

“You made your choice?””

I smiled.

“Yes.””

“Good.””

Her voice sounded confident.

“Then you’re signing?””

“No.””

Silence.

“What did you say?””

“I said no.””

Her tone changed.

“You don’t understand what happens next.””

“No.””

I looked at the documents on my table.

“You don’t understand what happens next.””

She went quiet.

Then she laughed.

“You think your father can protect you forever?””

I looked toward the window.

Dad was standing there.

Watching.

“No.””

I smiled.

“But I don’t need him to.””

Margaret’s voice became cold.

“You’ll regret this.””

“No.””

I paused.

“I regret the day I let you into my life.””

She hung up.

An hour later, my father received an email.

The sender?

Margaret.

The attachment?

A video.

We opened it together.

And within thirty seconds, my father’s expression changed.

“Emily.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He turned the laptop toward me.

On the screen was footage from my birthday night.

But it wasn’t the cake incident.

It was recorded before everyone arrived.

And in the video…

Margaret was talking to someone.

Someone I recognized.

Someone I never expected.

My heart stopped.

May you like

Because the person standing beside her was not Daniel.

It was someone from my own family.
