Chapter 4: The Page They Hid

The next morning, I woke up expecting everything to feel like a nightmare.

I expected to open my eyes and see Daniel beside me.

I expected the birthday disaster to be something we would talk about, apologize for, and somehow move past.

But his side of the bed was empty.

And for the first time in three years…

I was relieved.

My father was sitting in the kitchen when I walked downstairs.

Two cups of coffee were already waiting.

He looked tired.

Not angry.

Just tired.

“Did you sleep?””

I shook my head.

“Not really.””

He nodded.

“I figured.””

I sat across from him.

“Dad, what was on that page?””

He was quiet for a moment.

Then he opened his briefcase.

Inside was a copy of the missing document.

He placed it in front of me.

I read the first line.

And my hands went cold.

It was a life insurance policy.

My name was on it.

Daniel’s name was the beneficiary.

I looked up slowly.

“Why would you hide this?””

Dad looked away.

“I didn’t know how to tell you.””

My voice became quiet.

“How long?””

“Almost a year.””

I stared at the paper.

A year.

Daniel had been making plans while I was planning birthday dinners.

I had been buying him gifts while he was preparing an exit.

My father sighed.

“I found out when I noticed unusual financial activity.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I wanted proof.””

I looked at him.

“And you thought I couldn’t handle the truth?””

“No.””

His answer came immediately.

“I thought you loved him.””

That hurt.

Because he was right.

I did.

I loved him enough to ignore things I shouldn’t have ignored.

A week later, I met Daniel at a small café.

He looked different.

Less confident.

Less powerful.

Like someone who had finally realized his actions had consequences.

He stood when I arrived.

“Emily.””

I sat down.

“Why did you want to meet?””

He looked nervous.

“I want to fix this.””

I almost laughed.

“Fix what?””

“Our marriage.””

I looked at him.

“You tried to hide money from me.””

“I made mistakes.””

“You and your mother humiliated me.””

“It was a joke.””

I stared at him.

And he finally stopped saying it.

Because even he knew how empty that excuse sounded.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“My mother went too far.””

I looked away.

“No.””

He frowned.

“No?””

“She didn’t go too far.””

I looked back at him.

“She showed me exactly who she was.””

Daniel reached across the table.

“Emily, please.””

I moved my hand away.

That small movement hurt him.

I could see it.

But I also realized something.

For months, I had been afraid of hurting him.

He had never been afraid of hurting me.

Daniel whispered:

“I still love you.””

I looked at him.

“Do you?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you treat me like someone you hated?””

He had no answer.

Before he left, he said one final thing.

“My mother wants to apologize.””

I almost smiled.

“Does she?””

“Yes.””

I stood.

“Tell her I don’t need an apology.””

Daniel looked surprised.

“What do you need?””

I looked directly at him.

“The truth.””

That night, I received a message from an unknown number.

My heart stopped when I opened it.

There was a photo attached.

A photo of Daniel.

Standing outside a lawyer’s office.

May you like

The message underneath was only seven words.

“Your husband wasn’t planning to leave you.””
