Chapter 3: The Husband Who Stayed Silent

I wanted to hate Daniel.

Maybe that would have been easier.

Anger is simple.

Pain is complicated.

Because the hardest part wasn’t that his family betrayed me.

It was that the man who promised to protect me watched it happen.

The next morning, I sat in my father’s house staring at my wedding ring.

I should have taken it off.

But my fingers wouldn’t move.

My father entered the room.

“You don’t have to decide anything today.””

I looked up.

“Why did he do it?””

My father sat across from me.

“Fear makes people choose badly.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Fear?””

I looked at him.

“He watched his mother hit me.””

My father didn’t answer.

Because there was nothing to say.

Later that afternoon, Daniel arrived.

My father’s security team stopped him at the gate.

I told them to let him in.

Daniel looked different.

Smaller.

Broken.

He stood in the doorway.

“Emma.””

I didn’t respond.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“Sorry for what?””

He swallowed.

“For not believing you.””

I shook my head.

“No. You believed me.””

His eyes moved away.

“That’s worse.””

Silence.

“You knew.””

His face changed.

I already had my answer.

“How long?””

Daniel sat down.

“My mother told me about the necklace before dinner.””

My hands went cold.

“You knew she planned this?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you stop her?””

He closed his eyes.

“Because she threatened me.””

I stared at him.

“She threatened you?””

“She said if I embarrassed her, she would cut me off.””

I laughed softly.

“So you chose money.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

The room was silent.

Daniel looked at my wedding ring.

“I loved you.””

I looked at him.

“Love without courage is just a word.””

That hurt him.

But it was true.

Before he left, he turned around.

“There’s something else you need to know.””

I waited.

“My mother wasn’t trying to get rid of you because she hated you.””

I frowned.

“Then why?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Because she found out something about your father.””

My heart tightened.

“What?””

He looked toward the door.

“She knows your father’s company.””

I stood.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“She believes your father has information that could destroy her family.””

I felt confused.

“My father?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your father’s company handled security for the Whitmore corporation years ago.””

I froze.

My father had never mentioned that.

“What information?””

Daniel looked terrified.

“I don’t know.””

Then his phone rang.

He checked the screen.

His expression changed.

“What is it?””

He showed me the message.

It was from an unknown number.

One sentence.

“Tell Emma the truth before her father finds the file.””

My stomach dropped.

“What file?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

A second message arrived.

This time, it had a photo attached.

A picture of my father.

Standing beside Richard Whitmore.

Taken fifteen years ago.

And behind them was a document folder with a name written across it.

May you like

A name I had never heard before.

“Project Eden.””
