Chapter 5: The Trap Inside The Mansion

The accusation against me spread quickly.

By the next morning, the Whitmores had turned the story upside down.

According to them, I was a jealous outsider who attacked a wealthy family after being exposed as a thief.

They had money.

They had connections.

They had influence.

But they didn’t have one thing.

The truth.

My father gathered everyone in his office.

“We need to move carefully.””

I looked at him.

“I don’t want to hide anymore.””

He studied me.

“Are you sure?””

I nodded.

“They spent years making me feel small.””

I looked at the folder.

“I’m done being afraid.””

For the first time, my father smiled.

Not because he wanted revenge.

Because he saw his daughter standing again.

That afternoon, Daniel secretly met us.

He looked exhausted.

“My family knows I talked to you.””

“How?””

He looked down.

“They’re monitoring everyone.””

My father leaned forward.

“Why help us now?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because I realized something.””

He swallowed.

“I was protecting the people who hurt the person I loved.””

I didn’t forgive him.

Not yet.

But I listened.

Daniel placed a flash drive on the table.

“What is this?””

“Everything.””

My father picked it up.

“Where did you get it?””

“My mother’s office.””

My father looked serious.

“Do you understand what happens if they discover you took this?””

Daniel nodded.

“They’ll destroy me.””

I stared at him.

“Why risk it?””

His eyes met mine.

“Because you were the only person who ever loved me without wanting anything.””

Nobody spoke.

My father connected the drive.

Files appeared.

Financial records.

Emails.

Photos.

Then one file opened automatically.

The title made my father freeze.

“Project Eden.””

He clicked.

Inside were documents proving years of corruption.

But there was something else.

A video file.

Recorded the night I was thrown out.

We watched.

The camera angle showed Victoria and Richard in a private room.

Victoria was speaking.

“She won’t know the necklace was planted.””

Richard replied:

“And Daniel?””

“He’ll stay quiet. He always chooses comfort.””

My hands covered my mouth.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

Victoria smiled.

“If Carter comes looking for his daughter, we’ll use the old secret.””

My father stopped the video.

“What old secret?””

I looked at him.

“Dad?””

He didn’t answer.

Because he was staring at another file.

A file created years before I was born.

The name on it was not Project Eden.

It was my name.

“Emma Carter.””

My heart stopped.

“Why is there a file about me?””

My father slowly opened it.

Inside was one sentence.

A sentence that changed the entire story.

“Subject is the biological heir of the Whitmore family fortune.””

I stared at the screen.

I couldn’t breathe.

“What?””

My father looked at me.

And for the first time in my life…

he looked afraid.

May you like

Because the truth he had hidden from me was bigger than revenge.

It was the reason the Whitmores had been trying to destroy me all along.
