Chapter 6: The Secret Bloodline
The room felt smaller after those words appeared on the screen.
“Subject is the biological heir of the Whitmore family fortune.””
I read the sentence again.
And again.
But no matter how many times I looked at it, the letters refused to make sense.
I looked at my father.
“Dad…”
My voice barely came out.
“What does that mean?””
Alexander Carter stood completely still.
For the first time in my life, I saw something I had never seen before.
Fear.
Not anger.
Not determination.
Fear.
He closed the laptop.
“Emma, there are things you need to know.””
I stepped back.
“No.””
The word came out before I could stop it.
“No, you don’t get to say that.””
My father looked hurt.
“You hid this from me.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“Everyone says that when they take away your choice.””
The silence between us was painful.
Daniel stood near the door, watching.
Even he looked shocked.
My father walked toward the window.
“When you were born, your mother and I were not who people thought we were.””
I frowned.
“My mother?””
He nodded.
“Your mother was Elizabeth Whitmore.””
The name hit me like a physical blow.
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.””
“She was Richard Whitmore’s older sister.””
I stared at him.
The entire world shifted.
“My mother was a Whitmore?””
“Yes.””
I sat down slowly.
The woman whose picture I barely remembered had been connected to the family that spent years making me feel worthless.
My father continued.
“Elizabeth discovered what Richard was doing with the family company. She wanted to expose him.””
“And?””
“She disappeared.””
My chest tightened.
“You mean she died?””
My father didn’t answer immediately.
That was answer enough.
I covered my face.
“All these years…”
My father sat beside me.
“I found evidence that Richard had been manipulating the family trust. Your mother was the rightful heir to a large portion of the Whitmore estate.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“So Emma…”
My father looked at him.
“Emma is not an outsider.””
The words felt strange.
Because that was exactly what they had called me.
An outsider.
A gold digger.
A mistake.
But all along, I was connected to the very family that looked down on me.
My phone suddenly buzzed.
Unknown number.
A message.
*You finally found out. Ask your father what happened the night your mother disappeared.*
My hands shook.
Daniel noticed.
“What is it?””
I showed him.
My father’s expression darkened.
“Don’t respond.””
“Who sent this?””
“I don’t know.””
But I knew he was lying.
“You do.””
He looked away.
“Dad.””
After a long pause, he finally spoke.
“Your mother’s disappearance was never investigated properly.””
“Why?””
“Because powerful people made sure it wasn’t.””
I stood.
“So you knew Richard Whitmore could be dangerous, and you still let me marry into his family?””
My father looked devastated.
“I didn’t know Daniel was connected to them when you met.””
“But once you knew?””
He had no answer.
That hurt.
Because everyone had been protecting me by hiding the truth.
Everyone except me.
That night, I couldn’t sleep.
I walked through my father’s house until I found an old room filled with boxes.
My childhood memories.
Photos.
Letters.
I opened one box.
Inside was a small envelope.
My name was written on it.
*For Emma, when she is old enough.*
My heart stopped.
I opened it.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
But I knew immediately who it was.
My mother.
Emma,
If you are reading this, it means the truth finally reached you.
I wanted you to grow up without fear. I wanted you to know love before knowing power.
The Whitmore name carries wealth, but it also carries darkness.
Never let anyone convince you that your worth comes from what you inherit.
Your heart is your greatest possession.
Tears filled my eyes.
At the bottom was one final sentence.
But if Richard ever comes for you, remember this: he is afraid of what you can become.
I heard footsteps behind me.
My father.
He looked at the letter.
“You found it.””
“Why didn’t you give this to me?””
“Because I hoped you would never need it.””
I turned around.
“Dad.””
“Yes?””
“Who really caused my mother’s death?””
He looked down.
Then my father said something that froze me.
“I think Richard Whitmore didn’t act alone.””
Before I could ask more, every light in the house went out.
The security alarms started screaming.
My father immediately moved.
“Everyone down!””
The sound of breaking glass came from downstairs.
Daniel grabbed my arm.
“Emma, we need to move.””
My father’s guards rushed through the hallway.
Then one of them shouted:
“Mr. Carter!””
My father turned.
“What?””
The guard’s face was pale.
“Someone entered the security room.””
My father’s expression changed.
“Impossible.””
The guard swallowed.
“They used Emma’s access code.””
I felt cold.
“My access code?””
My father looked at me.
Then toward the dark hallway.
May you like
Because someone inside the house had just used my identity.
And they knew secrets even my father tried to bury.
