Chapter 2: The Footage They Forgot Existed

Richard read the message three times.

He didn't recognize the number.

He didn't recognize the wording.

But he recognized the danger.

For thirty-seven years, he had run Coleman Development Group, a property investment company that had survived recessions, lawsuits, failed partnerships, and competitors who had tried to destroy him.

He had learned that the most dangerous people rarely announced themselves.

They smiled.

They offered help.

And they waited until you stopped watching.

Richard typed a reply.

*Who is this?*

The answer came almost immediately.

*Someone who knows what happened in your living room.*

Richard looked toward the study door.

“Mrs. Jenkins?””

“Yes, sir?””

“Please lock the front entrance. And don't tell Michael or Vanessa that I've received a message.””

She nodded.

“Are you sure you're all right?””

Richard looked at his hands.

“No,” he answered honestly.

“But I intend to be.””

He waited until she left before calling the number.

It rang twice.

A woman answered.

“Mr. Coleman?””

“Who am I speaking to?””

“Danielle Brooks. I work for the security company that installed the cameras in your house.””

Richard frowned.

“I know the company.””

“I was the technician assigned to your property three years ago. I recognized your address when someone tried to request footage this afternoon.””

“Who requested it?””

“Your daughter-in-law.””

Richard closed his eyes briefly.

“What did she want?””

“To delete the recordings from the living room and the main staircase.””

“And you refused?””

“Yes, sir. But she wasn't asking casually. She offered me money.””

Richard's expression hardened.

“How much?””

“Ten thousand dollars.””

The old man sat forward.

“For footage?””

“For footage that supposedly didn't exist.””

Richard looked at the security monitor.

“Can you recover it?””

“That's why I'm calling. Your system stores a backup on a separate encrypted drive. The main account can delete local recordings, but not the backup without a second authorization.””

“Send me everything.””

“I can bring it to you.””

“No. Don't come to the house.””

There was a pause.

“Why?””

“Because I no longer know who I can trust inside it.””

Danielle was quiet for a moment.

Then she said, “I understand.””

Richard gave her the address of his lawyer's office.

“Meet me there tomorrow morning. Bring the original files.””

“I'll be there.””

Before ending the call, Danielle added something.

“Mr. Coleman?””

“Yes?””

“There's something else.””

Richard waited.

“The request to erase the footage wasn't the first unusual request made under your family's account.””

“What do you mean?””

“Three weeks ago, someone asked us to change the access permissions on your private office cameras.””

Richard's stomach tightened.

“Who?””

“The request came through your son's email.””

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Then Richard ended the call.

He sat in the quiet study, staring at the dark screen.

Michael had access to the security system.

Michael had access to the family accounts.

Michael had access to almost everything.

Richard had given him those privileges because he believed a father should prepare his son to inherit responsibility.

He had never imagined his son would use that access to prepare his father's downfall.

Upstairs, Vanessa was sitting at the dressing table in the master bedroom.

She had changed into a silk robe and removed the remaining makeup from her face.

Her phone was beside a glass of champagne.

Michael stood near the window.

“You didn't have to take it that far,” he said.

Vanessa looked at him through the mirror.

“Take what that far?””

“You know what I mean.””

She picked up a cotton pad.

“Your father grabbed your arm. He frightened me.””

Michael turned.

“He barely touched you.””

Vanessa stopped moving.

For the first time that evening, her expression became genuinely cold.

“Excuse me?””

Michael rubbed his forehead.

“I just mean—”

“You mean you think I exaggerated?””

“No.””

“Then say what you mean.””

Michael looked away.

Vanessa placed the cotton pad on the table.

“Michael, your father has spent years treating you like a child. Every decision you make has to go through him. Every dollar you spend has to be explained. Every business idea you have becomes a lecture.””

“He built the company.””

“And you are supposed to inherit it.””

Michael said nothing.

Vanessa stood.

“You told me you were tired of living under his shadow.””

“I am.””

“You told me you wanted control.””

“I do.””

“Then why are you suddenly worried because he fell on a carpet?””

Michael looked at her.

“He's still my father.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“And I'm your wife.””

The words hung between them.

She touched his cheek.

“Who was standing beside you when your father called you a disappointment at Thanksgiving?””

Michael didn't answer.

“Who defended you when he told everyone your business proposal was irresponsible?””

“You did.””

“Who has been helping you build a future?””

“You.””

Vanessa smiled gently.

“Then stop looking backward.””

Michael exhaled.

“What happens now?””

Vanessa returned to the dressing table and opened a drawer.

Inside was a folder containing several printed documents.

“Now we make sure your father understands that this house isn't his kingdom anymore.””

Michael glanced at the folder.

“What is that?””

“An emergency protection petition.””

His eyes narrowed.

“Protection from whom?””

“Your father. Given what happened today, we can claim he has become unpredictable and potentially dangerous.””

Michael stared at her.

“That's a little extreme.””

Vanessa slowly closed the folder.

“Extreme would be letting him destroy our future.””

She picked up her phone.

A new message had arrived.

*Camille: Did he believe everything?*

Vanessa typed back.

*Almost. Keep Michael distracted. We need his signature before Monday.*

She deleted the message.

Then she looked at Michael.

“Go check on Camille. She's been waiting.””

Michael hesitated.

“Why does she need me?””

Vanessa gave him a look.

“Because you told her everything would be taken care of.””

Michael picked up his phone.

“I'll be back.””

Vanessa watched him leave.

The bedroom door clicked shut.

Her expression changed instantly.

She walked to the closet, opened a locked cabinet, and removed a second folder.

This one was thicker.

On the front, someone had written:

*THE COLEMAN ESTATE TRANSFER.*

Vanessa ran her finger across the title.

Then she whispered to herself.

“Soon enough.””

At 8:15 the following morning, Richard arrived at the office of attorney Samuel Whitmore.

Samuel was seventy-one, with silver hair, wire-rimmed glasses, and the habit of listening without interrupting.

He had represented Richard for more than twenty years.

When Richard entered, Samuel stood immediately.

“Richard, what happened to your face?””

Richard placed his cane beside the chair.

“Family disagreement.””

Samuel's expression tightened.

“Did Michael do that?””

Richard looked at him.

“I need you to listen before you judge anyone.””

Samuel nodded.

“Go ahead.””

Richard explained the incident.

He described Vanessa's lipstick, the staged fall, Michael's reaction, and the security footage.

Samuel listened without interruption.

When Richard finished, the lawyer removed his glasses.

“Do you have proof?””

“Danielle Brooks is bringing the footage.””

“Good. What else?””

Richard took out the leather notebook.

“I want you to examine the family trust.””

Samuel looked down.

“Why?””

“Because I believe my son and his wife are trying to force me out of this house.””

Samuel opened the notebook.

He read the first page.

Then the second.

His expression changed.

“Richard, when was the last time you reviewed the trust documents?””

“About six months ago.””

“Have you signed anything since then?””

Richard thought carefully.

“A few routine documents Michael brought me.””

Samuel's eyes lifted.

“What kind of documents?””

“Business authorizations. Some banking paperwork.””

“Did you read every page?””

Richard didn't answer immediately.

Samuel slowly closed the notebook.

“Richard, I need to ask you something, and I need you to be completely honest.””

“Ask.””

“Has Michael been asking you to transfer ownership of the mansion?””

Richard stared at him.

“Not directly.””

“What does that mean?””

“He said the property should eventually belong to him and Vanessa. He suggested we simplify the inheritance process.””

“And what did you tell him?””

“That I would consider it.””

Samuel leaned back.

“Did you sign anything?””

“I don't remember.””

Samuel reached for his computer.

“Then we're going to find out.””

At 9:42, Danielle arrived.

She carried a small black case.

After greeting Samuel, she placed a laptop on the desk.

“I recovered the backup recordings,” she said.

Richard leaned forward.

“Show me.””

Danielle opened the file.

The living room appeared on the screen.

The timestamp showed 4:12 p.m. the previous day.

Vanessa entered the room alone.

She looked toward the staircase.

Then toward the hallway.

She took a lipstick from her purse.

Richard's fingers tightened around his cane.

On the screen, Vanessa slowly drew a red line across her cheek.

She stepped backward, checked her reflection in the dark television screen, then smiled.

Samuel whispered something under his breath.

The recording continued.

Vanessa ruffled her hair.

She pulled at her collar.

Then she looked toward the staircase again.

At 4:15, she dropped onto the carpet.

The recording captured every second.

Her scream.

Richard's confusion.

Michael rushing downstairs.

The accusation.

And the moment Michael shoved his father.

Richard looked away.

Samuel paused the recording.

“That's enough.””

“No,” Richard said.

His voice was low.

“Keep going.””

The footage continued until Vanessa stood behind Michael and smiled at the fallen old man.

Samuel stared at the screen.

“Good Lord.””

Danielle opened another recording.

“This one is from the hallway outside the master bedroom.””

The timestamp was from three nights earlier.

Vanessa and Camille appeared near the doorway.

They were speaking quietly.

Danielle increased the volume.

Camille's voice came through the speakers.

“What if Richard refuses?””

Vanessa answered without hesitation.

“He won't have a choice once Michael takes control.””

“And if he finds out?””

“He won't.””

Camille hesitated.

“What about the trust?””

Vanessa laughed.

“Michael will sign everything. His father will be too busy defending himself to notice.””

Richard felt a chill travel down his spine.

Samuel stopped the recording.

“Who is Camille?””

Richard looked at the screen.

“Someone I thought was a family friend.””

Danielle opened another file.

This one showed Michael entering his father's study.

He sat at the desk, opened a drawer, and removed a document.

Then he photographed several pages with his phone.

Richard recognized the folder.

It contained the original estate documents.

Samuel leaned closer.

“Can you identify the date?””

Danielle zoomed in.

The timestamp was from two weeks earlier.

Richard slowly shook his head.

“Michael told me he was looking for the property tax statement.””

Samuel looked at him.

“Richard, I think we have a much bigger problem than a false assault accusation.””

Danielle nodded.

“There is one more file.””

She opened it.

The image showed Vanessa entering the study the following morning.

She carried a small envelope.

She placed it inside Richard's desk drawer.

Then she left.

Samuel stared at the screen.

“What did she put in there?””

Richard stood.

“I don't know.””

“Do you want us to check?””

Richard looked toward the office window.

Beyond it, the city was moving through another ordinary morning.

Cars passed.

People hurried to work.

The world continued as if nothing had happened.

But his world had changed.

“Yes,” he said.

“Find out what was in that envelope.””

Samuel turned back to Danielle.

“Can you get the next recording?””

Danielle clicked another file.

The screen went black for two seconds.

Then an image appeared.

Michael was standing inside the study, holding a document.

He turned toward the camera and said something that made Richard's blood run cold.

“Once Dad is declared incompetent, nobody will question the transfer.””

Richard slowly lowered himself into his chair.

Samuel looked at him.

“Did you hear that?””

Richard nodded.

Then Danielle paused the footage and zoomed in on the document in Michael's hand.

A signature was visible at the bottom.

It was Richard's signature.

But Richard had never signed that page.

At 10:30, Samuel called his associate.

At 10:45, he requested copies of every recent property and trust filing.

At 11:10, he placed a temporary hold on any transfer that might affect Richard's estate.

But Richard was no longer thinking about paperwork.

He was thinking about the envelope Vanessa had placed in his desk.

He remembered the small sound it had made when it landed.

He remembered the way she had looked around before leaving.

And he remembered something else.

The day before the staged accusation, Vanessa had asked him an unusual question over breakfast.

“Richard, do you still keep all your original documents in the study?””

He had laughed.

“Of course. I'm old-fashioned.””

She had smiled.

“That's actually sweet.””

Now the memory made his stomach turn.

Samuel's phone rang.

He answered.

“Yes?””

A pause.

Then his expression darkened.

“What do you mean the document has already been filed?””

Richard stood.

“What is it?””

Samuel slowly lowered the phone.

“Richard, someone has submitted an application to have you declared mentally incapable of managing your financial affairs.””

Richard stared at him.

“Who?””

Samuel turned his computer toward him.

The application contained two names.

Michael Coleman.

And Vanessa Coleman.

But it was the final attachment that made Richard's blood run cold.

A medical assessment.

With a doctor's signature.

And a date from the previous week.

Richard had never visited that doctor.

He had never undergone that examination.

He had never authorized anyone to examine him.

Samuel enlarged the signature.

“Do you recognize this physician?””

Richard stared at the name.

May you like

Then he whispered:

“That's Michael's personal doctor.””
