Chapter 4: The Name Hidden in the Original Trust

Richard stared at the document in his hands.

For several seconds, he couldn't hear anything in the room.

Not Michael's angry breathing.

Not Vanessa's frantic whispering.

Not even the investigator asking Camille to step away from the desk.

All Richard could see was the name printed beneath the company heading.

*Evelyn Coleman.*

His late wife's name.

He slowly lowered the paper.

“Where did you get this?””

Camille swallowed.

“From Vanessa's office.””

“Why were you in her office?””

“Because she asked me to bring her some documents. I wasn't supposed to look inside the folder, but I saw your signature.””

Richard studied her face.

“Explain.””

Camille glanced at Michael.

He looked furious.

“Camille, don't,” he warned.

She flinched.

Richard noticed.

“Michael, let her speak.””

Michael stepped toward her.

“She doesn't know what she's talking about.””

Camille shook her head.

“I know exactly what I'm talking about.””

Vanessa slammed her handbag onto the desk.

“This is ridiculous. She's been having an affair with my husband, and now she wants to destroy our marriage.””

The investigator raised his hand.

“Mrs. Coleman, please remain calm.””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“I'm the victim here!””

Richard almost laughed.

Almost.

Instead, he looked at Camille.

“What did you find?””

Camille took a shaky breath.

“Vanessa told Michael that the mansion would become his once the guardianship petition was approved. She said the other properties would be transferred to a company called Evelyn Holdings.””

Richard's fingers tightened around the document.

“Evelyn Holdings?””

“Yes.””

“That company was dissolved years ago.””

Camille shook her head.

“No, sir. Vanessa said it had been reactivated.””

Richard looked at Samuel's message on his phone.

The company wasn't supposed to exist anymore.

He had created it with Evelyn twenty-five years earlier, shortly after their daughter was born.

It was meant to protect the family's original investments.

But when Evelyn died, Richard had believed the company had been absorbed into the Coleman Family Trust.

He had never questioned the paperwork.

He had trusted the attorneys handling the estate.

“Who owns it now?”” he asked.

Camille hesitated.

Then she looked directly at Vanessa.

“Your daughter-in-law.””

The room fell silent.

Richard slowly turned toward Vanessa.

“Is that true?””

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“You have no idea what you're talking about.””

“Then explain the document.””

“It's an old business arrangement.””

“Why is your name attached to it?””

“Because I was trying to protect the family.””

Richard looked at her for a long moment.

“From whom?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Michael stepped between them.

“Dad, this has gone too far.””

Richard looked at him.

“You brought a court investigator into my home to have me declared incompetent. You presented a medical report from a doctor I have never met. You tried to transfer my property using a signature I never gave you.””

His voice remained calm.

“And now you want me to believe all of this was done to protect me?””

Michael's jaw tightened.

“I never wanted things to happen this way.””

Richard nodded slowly.

“But you wanted them to happen.””

Michael looked away.

That was the answer Richard needed.

Samuel arrived twenty minutes later.

He entered the study carrying a leather briefcase and immediately approached the investigator.

“I'm Samuel Whitmore, Mr. Coleman's legal representative. I understand there is an active guardianship petition.””

The investigator nodded.

“I'm here to verify the information submitted.””

“Then I believe you'll want to see these.””

Samuel placed several documents on the desk.

The first was a certified copy of Richard's independent medical assessment.

The second contained the original security footage.

The third was a corporate ownership record for Evelyn Holdings.

Richard watched Samuel open the final document.

“Twenty-five years ago,” Samuel explained, “Richard and his late wife established this company as a separate investment vehicle. The controlling interest was placed under a protected family arrangement.””

He turned a page.

“Mrs. Evelyn Coleman retained a lifetime beneficial interest. Following her death, that interest passed according to the original trust instructions.””

Richard leaned forward.

“To whom?””

Samuel looked at him.

“Your daughter, Amelia.””

Richard stopped breathing for a moment.

Amelia.

His only child.

The daughter he had lost in a car accident when she was twenty-two.

He stared at Samuel.

“That can't be right.””

“It is.””

“Amelia never mentioned any company.””

“She wasn't required to. The arrangement was designed to protect her inheritance until she reached the age specified in the original agreement.””

Richard shook his head.

“She died before that.””

Samuel nodded.

“And that's where things become complicated.””

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

“You see? This is exactly why Richard shouldn't be making financial decisions.””

Samuel turned toward her.

“Mrs. Coleman, I strongly recommend that you stop speaking.””

She folded her arms.

“You can't tell me what to do.””

“I can certainly advise you that every additional statement you make may become relevant to a criminal investigation.””

Her expression changed.

Samuel continued.

“According to the original trust, Amelia's beneficial interest did not automatically revert to Richard upon her death.””

Richard looked confused.

“Then where did it go?””

Samuel opened the next page.

“To a contingent beneficiary.””

He turned the document toward Richard.

The name was clearly printed.

*Daniela Brooks.*

Richard frowned.

“Who is Daniela Brooks?””

Samuel removed his glasses.

“Your granddaughter.””

Richard stared at him.

For a moment, he thought he had misunderstood.

“My granddaughter?””

Samuel nodded.

“Amelia had a daughter.””

The room seemed to tilt.

Richard gripped the edge of the desk.

“No.””

Samuel spoke gently.

“Richard, the original birth record is attached to the trust file.””

“No. Amelia would have told me.””

“She may not have had the opportunity.””

Richard looked at the name again.

Daniela.

His granddaughter.

A person who had apparently existed for more than two decades without him knowing.

He turned toward Camille.

“Did Vanessa know?””

Camille nodded.

“She found out several months ago.””

Richard's expression hardened.

“How?””

“Through an estate search. She was looking for old property records when she discovered the company.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“That's a lie.””

Camille continued.

“She told Michael that if the granddaughter could be located, they could pressure her into signing away her rights.””

Michael looked at Vanessa.

“You told me the company belonged to the family.””

“It does!””

“You said the transfer was legal!””

Vanessa pointed at Camille.

“She is making all of this up!””

Samuel opened another document.

“Mrs. Coleman, your company submitted an application last month to acquire Evelyn Holdings' controlling interest.””

Vanessa went pale.

Richard looked at the paper.

The application contained an attached declaration claiming that the original beneficiary was deceased.

But Daniela was not listed as deceased.

She was listed as missing.

Richard slowly raised his eyes.

“Why would you declare my granddaughter missing?””

Vanessa's silence answered him.

The investigator requested that everyone remain in the study while he documented the evidence.

Vanessa refused.

“This is a private family matter. I am leaving.””

He stood near the doorway.

“Mrs. Coleman, I need you to remain available while I verify the documents.””

“You cannot detain me!””

“No one is detaining you. But leaving before I complete the interview may complicate matters.””

Vanessa looked at Michael.

“Tell him.””

Michael didn't move.

“Michael!””

He stared at the floor.

Richard watched his son with a strange mixture of sadness and disbelief.

“Son,” he said quietly, “when did you become so afraid of her?””

Michael's head snapped up.

“I'm not afraid of anyone.””

“Then tell the truth.””

Michael opened his mouth.

Vanessa interrupted.

“He has nothing to tell you.””

Richard turned toward her.

“I wasn't speaking to you.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked genuinely powerless.

She picked up her handbag and walked toward the door.

But before she reached it, Camille spoke.

“There's something else.””

Vanessa stopped.

Richard looked at her.

“What?””

Camille reached into her handbag and removed a small USB drive.

“I copied the files from Vanessa's private laptop.””

Vanessa spun around.

“You stole from me?””

Camille's voice trembled, but she didn't back down.

“You were going to blame everything on Michael.””

Michael looked at her.

“What are you talking about?””

Camille placed the drive on the desk.

“There's a recording.””

Samuel immediately stepped forward.

“Where did you obtain this?””

“From a folder labeled 'Final Plan.''”

Vanessa lunged toward the desk.

The investigator blocked her.

“Please step back.””

Camille looked at Richard.

“Mr. Coleman, you need to hear what she said about your granddaughter.””

Samuel connected the USB drive to his laptop.

A video appeared.

Vanessa was sitting in a hotel room.

She was wearing the same burgundy dress.

The date was from six weeks earlier.

A man's voice came from behind the camera.

“Are you sure the girl is still in the country?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She's somewhere in Georgia.””

“What if she finds out?””

“She won't.””

“And if Richard contacts her?””

Vanessa smiled.

“Richard doesn't even know she exists.””

The man laughed.

“What about the inheritance?””

Vanessa leaned forward.

“Once Michael gets control of the estate, we can make the girl disappear from the paperwork.””

Richard's face went white.

The recording continued.

Then Vanessa said something that made everyone in the study freeze.

“If Daniela ever shows up, we'll tell her grandfather that she's the reason Amelia died.””

The screen went black.

Richard sat motionless.

His granddaughter had been alive all these years.

And Vanessa had been planning to use the death of his daughter against her.

He slowly looked at his daughter-in-law.

“You knew about Amelia's child.””

Vanessa said nothing.

“You knew I had a granddaughter.””

Her lips tightened.

“And you never told me.””

Vanessa finally spoke.

“Because she would have complicated everything.””

Richard stood.

For the first time that afternoon, his voice rose.

“She is my family!””

Vanessa took a step backward.

“She is nothing to you!””

Richard stared at her.

Then he spoke with devastating calm.

“She is the last living piece of my daughter.””

He turned toward Samuel.

“Find her.””

Samuel nodded.

“I will.””

Richard looked at the investigator.

“And make sure every document concerning Evelyn Holdings is preserved.””

The investigator wrote something down.

But Richard wasn't finished.

He looked directly at Michael.

“Your mother would be ashamed of what you've become.””

Michael's face crumpled.

“Dad, please.””

Richard turned away.

“Get out of my study.””

And as Michael and Vanessa were escorted into the hallway, Richard looked down at the name on the trust document once more.

Daniela Brooks.

He had lost one daughter.

He wasn't going to lose another person from her family.

Not now.

Not ever.

Then Samuel's phone rang.

He listened for several seconds.

His expression changed.

Richard noticed immediately.

“What is it?””

Samuel slowly lowered the phone.

“We found Daniela.””

Richard's heart began pounding.

“Where?””

Samuel hesitated.

“She's been living less than forty miles from here.””

“Then let's go.””

Samuel looked at him.

“Richard, there's a problem.””

“What problem?””

“She knows about the inheritance.””

Richard's expression tightened.

“And?””

May you like

Samuel swallowed.

“She believes you abandoned her mother.””
