Chapter 6: The Secret My Daughter Took to Her Grave
Richard drove home in silence.
Samuel sat beside him, holding the disputed document inside a protective folder.
Neither man spoke until the mansion came into view.
The house looked exactly as it had the day Richard and Evelyn purchased it.
White columns.
Tall windows.
A sweeping driveway lined with oak trees.
The garden was still beautiful.
But Richard no longer felt that it belonged to him.
Not because of Vanessa.
Not because of Michael.
Because of what Amelia's letter had revealed.
Twenty-five years earlier, something had happened inside that house.
Something his daughter had tried to protect Daniela from.
And now the truth was returning.
“Samuel,” Richard said.
“Yes?””
“Tell me again what the document says.””
Samuel opened the folder.
“It's an assignment of controlling interest from Evelyn Holdings to Coleman Strategic Assets.””
“Who owns Coleman Strategic Assets?””
“According to the original filing, Michael Coleman.””
Richard shook his head.
“Michael was a child.””
“He was seventeen.””
“His mother was still alive.””
Samuel nodded.
“And the document carries your signature.””
Richard looked through the windshield.
“I never signed it.””
“I believe you.””
“Then who did?””
Samuel turned to the final page.
“There are two witnesses.””
Richard took the document.
The first name was familiar.
*Arthur Bell.*
His former accountant.
The second name made his stomach tighten.
*Evelyn Coleman.*
His late wife.
Richard slowly lowered the paper.
“Evelyn witnessed this?””
“According to the filing.””
“That makes no sense.””
“Why?””
“Because Evelyn would never have transferred Amelia's inheritance without telling me.””
Samuel studied the document.
“Unless she believed the transfer was temporary.””
Richard looked at him.
“What do you mean?””
Samuel pointed to a paragraph near the bottom.
“The assignment contains a condition. It states that the assets would return to the original trust if Michael failed to meet certain obligations before his twenty-fifth birthday.””
Richard frowned.
“Michael was seventeen.””
“Exactly.””
“Then why was it never reversed?””
Samuel closed the folder.
“That is what we need to find out.””
Inside the mansion, Michael was pacing the living room.
Vanessa sat on the sofa with a laptop open.
The previous day's confrontation had changed everything.
Their father had the footage.
The investigator had seen the medical report.
Camille had betrayed them.
And now Daniela Brooks was involved.
Michael stopped pacing.
“Who is Arthur Bell?””
Vanessa didn't look up.
“Why?””
“I found his name in Dad's old files.””
“An accountant.””
“Was he involved with the original trust?””
Vanessa closed the laptop.
“Michael, we have more important problems.””
“No. I want an answer.””
She sighed.
“Arthur handled some of the family's old financial arrangements.””
“What happened to him?””
“I don't know.””
Michael stared at her.
“Vanessa.””
She finally looked up.
“What?””
“Did you know about the document transferring Evelyn Holdings to me?””
Her expression became unreadable.
“Why are you asking?””
“Because Dad found it.””
Vanessa stood.
“Where?””
“With Samuel.””
She walked toward the fireplace.
“Then we need to act quickly.””
Michael laughed bitterly.
“That's always your answer.””
Vanessa turned.
“What do you want me to say?””
“The truth!””
She placed both hands on the mantel.
“Fine. The original transfer was part of an arrangement between your mother and Arthur Bell.””
Michael stared.
“What arrangement?””
“Your mother believed your father was going to sell the company. She wanted to protect certain assets.””
“By transferring them to me?””
“By putting them somewhere your father couldn't touch.””
Michael looked confused.
“Why didn't she tell me?””
“Because you were seventeen.””
“Then why does Dad think it was forged?””
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
“Because he doesn't remember everything.””
Michael stared at her.
“What?””
“Your father was under enormous pressure at the time. Your mother was sick. The company was struggling. He signed dozens of documents.””
Michael looked down.
“Dad said he never signed it.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“And now you believe him over your own wife?””
Michael shook his head.
“I don't know what to believe anymore.””
Vanessa reached for his hand.
“Then believe what you know. You signed the guardianship documents. You authorized the transfers. You are already involved.””
Michael pulled away.
“I didn't know you were going to forge anything.””
Vanessa's eyes hardened.
“You're beginning to sound like Camille.””
Michael went still.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked at him for a long moment.
Then she said something that made his blood run cold.
“Camille wasn't the only person I had to keep close to make this work.””
Michael frowned.
“Who else?””
Vanessa picked up her phone.
“Arthur Bell.””
At 3:30 p.m., Richard entered his study.
The leather notebook was still on the desk.
He opened it to the original trust records.
A small photograph slipped from between the pages.
It showed Evelyn standing beside a man outside the old Coleman Development offices.
Richard picked it up.
The man was Arthur Bell.
He looked younger, with dark hair and a broad smile.
On the back of the photograph, Evelyn had written:
Arthur knows what we have to do. Please trust him.
Richard sat down.
He remembered Arthur.
The accountant had been more than an employee.
He had been a close friend.
He had attended Amelia's birthday parties.
He had helped Evelyn organize the company's early investments.
And after Evelyn's death, Arthur had disappeared.
Richard had assumed he had moved to another state.
He had never investigated.
His phone rang.
An unfamiliar number.
Richard answered.
“Hello?””
A man's voice spoke.
“Richard Coleman?””
“Who is this?””
“My name is Arthur Bell.””
Richard stood so quickly that the chair struck the wall.
“Arthur?””
“Yes.””
“Where have you been?””
There was a long silence.
Then Arthur said:
“I've been trying to stay alive.””
Richard felt a chill.
“What?””
“Listen carefully. I know you've discovered the old transfer document.””
“How do you know?””
“Because Vanessa called me this morning.””
Richard tightened his grip on the phone.
“What did she want?””
“She wants me to confirm that the transfer was legitimate.””
“Was it?””
Arthur exhaled.
“No.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“Then who forged it?””
Arthur's voice dropped.
“Not Vanessa.””
Richard froze.
“Who?””
“Your wife.””
The words struck him like a physical blow.
Richard couldn't speak.
Arthur continued.
“Evelyn signed the transfer herself, but she did it under a condition. She was trying to protect Amelia.””
“Protect her from what?””
“From someone inside the family.””
Richard gripped the edge of the desk.
“Who?””
Arthur hesitated.
Then he whispered:
“Your brother.””
Richard sat down.
He had one brother.
Edward Coleman.
They had grown up together, built their first business together, and fought over money until Richard finally bought Edward out.
They hadn't spoken in nearly twenty years.
Edward had left the company after a bitter disagreement.
Richard had believed the matter was finished.
“What did Edward do?”” Richard asked.
Arthur's voice sounded strained.
“He wanted control of Evelyn Holdings. He believed your wife had hidden money from him.””
“That company belonged to Evelyn and me.””
“Not according to Edward.””
Richard shook his head.
“He had no claim.””
“He knew that. But he also knew something about the original estate that you didn't.””
Richard looked at the photograph.
“What?””
Arthur took a breath.
“Your father created the company before you were born. He divided the original shares between you and Edward.””
Richard went completely still.
“That isn't true.””
“It is.””
“My father left everything to me.””
“That's what the will said. But the corporate records were different.””
Richard stared at the wall.
His father had died when Richard was twenty-six.
He remembered the funeral.
He remembered Edward refusing to attend.
He remembered the lawyer reading the will.
Everything had seemed straightforward.
But Arthur was saying there had been another arrangement.
“Why didn't anyone tell me?””
“Because Evelyn discovered the discrepancy years later.””
Richard's voice became rough.
“And Amelia?””
“She found the records.””
Richard closed his eyes.
The memory came back.
Amelia had visited his office shortly before she disappeared.
She had been upset.
She had asked him whether he knew Edward was trying to contact her.
Richard had dismissed it.
He had told her to stay out of business matters.
He had been busy.
Too busy to listen.
“Arthur,” he whispered.
“What happened to my daughter?””
Arthur didn't answer immediately.
Then he said:
“She wasn't supposed to be in that car.””
Richard's knees weakened.
“What?””
“The night of the accident, Amelia was supposed to meet me. She had the original documents. She wanted to give them to you.””
Richard stared at the phone.
“But she never arrived.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Arthur's voice cracked.
“Because someone followed her.””
Richard felt his chest tighten.
“Who?””
“I don't know.””
“Arthur, tell me!””
“I saw the car afterward. I saw what happened. But I didn't see who was driving the other vehicle.””
Richard gripped the desk.
“Why didn't you come to me?””
“Because Edward threatened me.””
“Edward is dead.””
“I know.””
Richard went silent.
Arthur continued.
“Your brother died three years ago. But before he died, he gave someone the original records.””
“Who?””
“I don't know.””
Richard stared at the document.
Then he asked the question he had been afraid to ask.
“Was Evelyn involved in the accident?””
Arthur's answer came slowly.
“No.””
Richard exhaled.
“But she knew what happened.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“And she never told me?””
“She was trying to protect you.””
“From my own brother?””
“From the people working for him.””
Richard sat in silence.
Then Arthur spoke again.
“Richard, there's something you need to understand about Vanessa.””
Richard's eyes opened.
“What?””
“She didn't discover Evelyn Holdings by accident.””
“Explain.””
“Someone gave her the original records.””
“Who?””
Arthur hesitated.
Then he said:
“Michael.””
Richard's blood ran cold.
“My son?””
“Your son contacted me four years ago. He wanted information about the original estate. I refused to help him.””
Richard shook his head.
“Why would Michael know about any of this?””
“Because Edward left him something.””
Richard stared at the wall.
“What?””
“A letter.””
Arthur lowered his voice.
“A letter addressed to Michael, explaining who really owned the Coleman estate.””
At 5:10 p.m., Michael was standing outside the mansion when his phone rang.
He looked at the caller ID.
Arthur Bell.
He answered immediately.
“Where have you been?””
Arthur spoke quietly.
“Your father knows.””
Michael closed his eyes.
“Knows what?””
“Everything.””
Michael looked through the glass doors.
Vanessa was inside, watching him.
“Did you tell him?””
“I told him the truth.””
Michael's jaw tightened.
“You had no right.””
“Neither did you.””
Michael turned away.
“You don't understand.””
“I understand perfectly. I told you four years ago to leave those documents alone.””
Michael lowered his voice.
“You promised my uncle you'd help me.””
Arthur went silent.
Then he said:
“Your uncle is dead, Michael.””
Michael swallowed.
“And the promise?””
“The promise was to protect your family. Not destroy it.””
Michael looked toward the driveway.
“What do you want?””
“I want you to tell your father where the original letter is.””
Michael's face went pale.
“It's gone.””
“Don't lie.””
“I burned it.””
Arthur paused.
Then he said:
“That's unfortunate.””
Michael frowned.
“Why?””
“Because the original letter wasn't the only copy.””
Michael's stomach dropped.
“What are you talking about?””
Arthur answered with five words.
“Your mother kept another copy.””
The call ended.
Michael stood motionless.
Then he rushed into the house.
“Vanessa!””
She looked up.
“What?””
“Where is the blue box?””
Vanessa frowned.
“What blue box?””
“The one from my mother's bedroom.””
Vanessa's expression changed.
“Why?””
“Because I need it.””
She slowly closed her laptop.
“Michael, what did Arthur say?””
Michael stared at her.
“How do you know I spoke to Arthur?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
He stepped closer.
“Where is the box?””
Vanessa walked toward the staircase.
“It's in the attic.””
Michael followed.
“Did you open it?””
“No.””
“Are you sure?””
She stopped on the stairs.
Then she turned.
“Why are you asking?””
Michael lowered his voice.
“Because my mother kept a copy of the original letter.””
Vanessa's face lost its color.
For the first time, Michael realized she was afraid.
Not of Richard.
Not of the investigator.
Not even of the court.
She was afraid of something inside that blue box.
Richard arrived at the mansion just after six.
Mrs. Jenkins met him at the entrance.
“Mr. Coleman, there's something you need to see.””
She handed him a small envelope.
“Where did you find this?””
“In the old guest bedroom. It was pushed underneath the door.””
Richard opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A younger Michael stood beside Edward Coleman.
Richard recognized the location immediately.
His brother's old office.
On the back was a handwritten message.
The boy knows the truth. Ask him what happened to Amelia.
Richard stared at the photograph.
Then he heard footsteps on the staircase.
Michael appeared.
He was holding a small blue wooden box.
Vanessa stood behind him.
Richard looked at the box.
“Where did you get that?””
Michael swallowed.
“Dad, we need to talk.””
Richard placed the photograph on the table.
“Yes,” he said.
“We do.””
Michael descended the stairs slowly.
“I didn't know what was in it.””
Richard looked at his son.
“Then open it.””
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“Michael, don't.””
Richard turned toward her.
“Why not?””
She said nothing.
Michael opened the box.
Inside were several old letters, a photograph of Amelia, and a sealed envelope.
Richard recognized Evelyn's handwriting.
His hands began to tremble.
He picked up the envelope.
On the front were five words.
*To Richard, if Amelia is gone.*
He broke the seal.
The first line made his heart stop.
Richard, if you are reading this, then I have failed to protect our daughter.
He continued.
There is something I should have told you years ago. Amelia did not disappear because she wanted to leave you. She left because she discovered what Edward had done to our family.
Richard looked up.
Michael was watching him.
Vanessa had gone completely still.
He read the next paragraph.
Edward did not act alone. Someone inside our home helped him access the original trust. Someone we trusted with our business, our money, and our family.
Richard's eyes moved to the final sentence.
And if that person is still alive, Richard, do not let him near Michael.
Richard slowly lowered the letter.
He looked at his son.
Then at Vanessa.
Then back at Michael.
“Your mother knew,” he whispered.
Michael's face crumpled.
“Knew what?””
Richard held up the letter.
“She knew someone was using you.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“That's enough.””
Richard ignored her.
He turned the final page over.
There was another handwritten note.
A name.
A name that Richard had not seen in more than twenty years.
*Samuel Whitmore.*
Richard looked toward the staircase.
His lawyer.
His oldest friend.
The man who had helped him investigate the forged documents.
The man who had been standing beside him through every revelation.
Richard's phone vibrated.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
*Don't trust Samuel. He knows exactly what happened to Amelia.*
May you like
Richard slowly raised his eyes.
And for the first time since this nightmare began, he wondered whether the man helping him uncover the truth had been hiding it all along.
