Chapter 9: The Grandchild Vanessa Stole

Richard couldn't move.

Vanessa stood at the bottom of the staircase with her handbag over one shoulder.

Michael looked between them.

“Where is the baby?””

Vanessa adjusted the strap.

“I already told you. Somewhere safe.””

“Vanessa!””

Michael's voice cracked.

“What did you do?””

She looked at him.

“Don't act like you care now.””

Richard stepped forward.

“You signed the release papers.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I did.””

“Why?””

“Because someone had to protect the child.””

“From whom?””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“From this family.””

Richard's jaw tightened.

“Don't you dare use my daughter to justify what you've done.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Your daughter was desperate, Richard. She made terrible decisions. She trusted the wrong people.””

“She was twenty-two.””

“And she was hiding a child.””

Richard stared at her.

“Where is my grandchild?””

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

“Not here.””

“Give me a name.””

She remained silent.

Michael stepped between them.

“You told me there was only Daniela.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You didn't need to know everything.””

Michael shook his head.

“You let me believe Mom had abandoned us.””

“You were a child.””

“You told me Dad was responsible.””

“He was.””

Richard turned sharply.

“What?””

Vanessa raised her chin.

“Your daughter was trying to expose the original estate fraud. She had documents that could have destroyed Edward, Samuel, and your entire company.””

Richard stared.

“Samuel?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He helped arrange the transfers.””

Michael looked stunned.

“Samuel was involved?””

Vanessa smiled faintly.

“Your father has spent twenty years trusting the wrong people.””

Richard's voice dropped.

“Where is the child?””

Vanessa looked at the front door.

Then back at Richard.

“You'll never find them.””

She walked out.

Michael started after her.

Richard grabbed his arm.

“Don't.””

Michael turned.

“Dad, she's leaving!””

“Let her.””

“But she knows where the baby is!””

Richard looked at him.

“And now we know she is afraid.””

At 11:15 p.m., Richard sat in the study with Samuel on speakerphone.

The lawyer sounded exhausted.

“Richard, I need you to understand that Vanessa's statement changes everything.””

“I understand.””

“She has admitted to signing the release papers. We need to locate the original records.””

“Can you do that?””

“I can try.””

Richard looked at the blue box.

“What about the second child?””

Samuel paused.

“I'm looking into it.””

Richard narrowed his eyes.

“Samuel, I don't want another half-truth.””

“I'm not hiding anything.””

“Then tell me why your name appears in Evelyn's letter.””

Samuel was silent.

Richard continued.

“Vanessa says you helped arrange the transfers.””

Samuel finally answered.

“I helped Evelyn move the assets away from Edward.””

Richard sat back.

“What?””

“Your wife discovered that Edward was using Michael's name to access the family trust. She knew he would eventually take control of the company.””

“Then why didn't she tell me?””

“Because she believed you were already compromised.””

Richard frowned.

“Compromised by whom?””

Samuel lowered his voice.

“By your own brother's business partners.””

Richard shook his head.

“That doesn't explain the children.””

Samuel exhaled.

“Evelyn asked me to find a safe place for Amelia's second baby.””

Richard froze.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“Where is the child?””

Samuel hesitated.

“I arranged the placement.””

Richard stood.

“Where?””

Samuel's voice cracked.

“I can't tell you over the phone.””

Richard slammed his hand onto the desk.

“Samuel!””

“I swear I was protecting the child.””

“From Vanessa?””

“From Edward. From the people who were paying him. From anyone who wanted the inheritance.””

Richard paced across the study.

“Who raised the baby?””

Samuel answered quietly.

“A couple who lived outside Savannah.””

Richard stopped.

“Do they still have the child?””

“No.””

“Where is the child now?””

Samuel took a breath.

“Richard, the child is an adult.””

Richard closed his eyes.

“How old?””

“Twenty-four.””

He sat down slowly.

Twenty-four.

A grandson or granddaughter who had lived an entire life without knowing the Coleman family existed.

“What's the name?””

Samuel looked at his notes.

“Jordan Brooks.””

Richard's heart began pounding.

“Brooks?””

“Yes.””

“Related to Daniela?””

Samuel hesitated.

“They share the same mother.””

Richard gripped the desk.

“Then they're siblings.””

“Yes.””

Richard looked at the photograph of Amelia.

She had given birth to two children.

She had lost both.

And for twenty-five years, he had known nothing.

“Find Jordan,” Richard said.

Samuel nodded.

“I will.””

“And Samuel?””

“Yes?””

“If you hide anything else from me, our relationship ends.””

Samuel lowered his voice.

“I understand.””

The next morning, Daniela arrived at the mansion.

She had brought Olivia with her.

The little girl was holding the family drawing she had made.

Richard opened the front door himself.

“Daniela.””

She looked at him.

“I got your message.””

“Thank you for coming.””

Daniela glanced inside.

“Where's Michael?””

“Upstairs.””

“And Vanessa?””

“Gone.””

Daniela nodded.

She didn't ask where Vanessa had gone.

She followed Richard into the living room.

Olivia looked around.

“Wow.””

Richard smiled gently.

“Do you like the house?””

She nodded.

“It's big.””

“It used to be full of people.””

Olivia looked up at him.

“Why did they leave?””

Richard glanced at Daniela.

“That's a long story.””

Daniela sat on the sofa.

“Mr. Coleman, I spoke to my attorney.””

Richard nodded.

“Of course.””

“I want the trust documents reviewed independently.””

“You should.””

“I also want to know what Vanessa said about my mother.””

Richard sat opposite her.

“Your mother had another child.””

Daniela went completely still.

“What?””

Richard explained everything.

The hospital records.

The second transfer.

The name Jordan Brooks.

Daniela stared at him.

“My mother had another baby?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't anyone tell me?””

Richard looked down.

“I wish I had an answer.””

Daniela stood and walked toward the window.

Her hands trembled.

“All these years, I thought I was alone.””

Richard rose slowly.

“You weren't.””

She turned.

“Don't say that.””

He stopped.

“You weren't there. You didn't know what happened to her. You didn't look for me.””

Richard nodded.

“You're right.””

Daniela's eyes filled.

“You don't get to make this better with money or a house.””

“I know.””

“I don't want your estate.””

“I understand.””

“I want my mother.””

Richard's face crumpled.

“So do I.””

For a moment, they stood in silence.

Then Olivia walked toward Richard.

She held out her drawing.

“I made this for you.””

Richard accepted it.

Three figures stood beneath a yellow sun.

A little girl.

A woman.

And an older man.

He smiled through his tears.

“Thank you, sweetheart.””

Olivia pointed at the older man.

“That's you.””

Richard nodded.

“I see that.””

“And this is Mommy.””

“Yes.””

“And that's me.””

Richard looked at the picture.

“It's beautiful.””

Olivia smiled.

“Now we have a grandpa.””

Daniela closed her eyes.

Richard looked at her.

He didn't ask for forgiveness.

He didn't ask her to stay.

He simply held the drawing with both hands.

At 1:40 p.m., Samuel arrived with a new file.

Richard was in the study with Daniela.

Samuel looked surprised to see her.

“Ms. Brooks.””

Daniela nodded.

“Mr. Whitmore.””

Richard gestured toward the chair.

“What have you found?””

Samuel placed the file on the desk.

“Jordan Brooks.””

Daniela immediately leaned forward.

“Is that my sibling?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

Samuel opened the folder.

“Savannah, Georgia. Jordan is twenty-four and works as an emergency medical technician.””

Daniela stared at the photograph.

A young person with dark hair and familiar eyes looked back at her.

She covered her mouth.

“They look like my mother.””

Richard nodded.

“I see it too.””

Samuel turned another page.

“There is something else.””

Richard's expression tightened.

“What now?””

“Jordan has been trying to contact the Coleman family for the past year.””

Daniela looked up.

“Why?””

Samuel removed a letter.

“Jordan found a copy of Amelia's original birth records and discovered the connection.””

“Did Jordan contact you?””

“Yes.””

“Did you answer?””

Samuel lowered his eyes.

“No.””

Richard stood.

“Why?””

Samuel looked uncomfortable.

“Because I was instructed not to.””

Richard stared.

“By whom?””

Samuel hesitated.

Then he answered.

“Vanessa.””

Daniela's expression hardened.

“She knew?””

Samuel nodded.

“She knew Jordan's identity. She knew where Jordan lived. She also knew about Daniela.””

Richard slowly sat down.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Samuel looked at him.

“Because Vanessa threatened to expose the original trust arrangement if I interfered.””

Richard laughed bitterly.

“You were protecting yourself.””

Samuel didn't deny it.

Daniela picked up the letter.

“What does Jordan want?””

Samuel opened it.

The handwriting was neat.

My name is Jordan Brooks. I believe Amelia Coleman was my biological mother. I have been trying to find my sister for years. I don't know whether she wants to meet me, but I would like the chance to know her.

Daniela's eyes filled.

She looked at Richard.

“I want to meet them.””

Richard nodded.

“I'll arrange it.””

Samuel closed the folder.

“There's one complication.””

Richard's jaw tightened.

“Of course there is.””

“Jordan is currently staying with someone connected to Vanessa.””

Daniela frowned.

“Who?””

Samuel looked at the photograph.

Then he turned it over.

A name was written on the back.

*Dr. Warren.*

Richard stood so quickly that the chair fell backward.

“Where is Jordan?””

Samuel took a breath.

“Dr. Warren's private residence.””

Daniela shook her head.

“Why would my sibling be staying with him?””

Samuel opened another document.

“Because Dr. Warren claims he is Jordan's legal guardian.””

Richard stared.

“Jordan is twenty-four.””

“I know.””

“Then how can he be a guardian?””

“He can't. But he has been managing Jordan's medical and financial records for years.””

Daniela looked at the photograph again.

“Why would Jordan allow that?””

Samuel turned to the final page.

“Because Jordan was told that their biological family had rejected them.””

Richard closed his eyes.

The same lie.

The same cruelty.

The same strategy.

Vanessa had taken two children from Amelia and made each believe they were unwanted.

Daniela stood.

“I'm going to Savannah.””

Richard nodded.

“So am I.””

At 5:30 p.m., Richard received a call from an unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A man's voice spoke.

“Mr. Coleman, this is Dr. Warren.””

Richard's expression hardened.

“What do you want?””

“I believe we need to discuss Jordan.””

“Where are they?””

“Safe.””

“Put them on the phone.””

The doctor laughed softly.

“That won't be possible.””

Richard gripped the phone.

“You have no legal authority over my grandchild.””

“Perhaps not. But I have something you want.””

“What?””

“The original medical file from the night Amelia died.””

Richard went silent.

Dr. Warren continued.

“It contains the truth about your daughter's final hours.””

“Send it to me.””

“I'd rather meet.””

Richard glanced at Daniela.

“When?””

“Tomorrow morning.””

“Where?””

“Northlake's old administrative building.””

Richard's voice became cold.

“And Jordan?””

“They'll be there.””

The call ended.

Daniela stared at him.

“Was that him?””

Richard nodded.

“Dr. Warren.””

“Did he say Jordan would be there?””

“Yes.””

Daniela picked up her coat.

“Then we're going.””

Richard reached for her hand.

“Not without protection.””

She looked at him.

“I'm not letting another person disappear from my family.””

Richard nodded.

“Neither am I.””

That night, Vanessa sat in the back of a black sedan.

The city lights moved across the window.

Her phone rang.

She answered.

“Did he agree?””

Dr. Warren spoke.

“Yes.””

“Good.””

“What happens if Richard brings the police?””

Vanessa looked at her reflection.

“Then we give him what he wants.””

“The medical file?””

“Not the whole file.””

“And Jordan?””

Vanessa smiled.

“Jordan will tell him exactly what we need.””

Dr. Warren hesitated.

“You're taking a risk.””

Vanessa looked down at the second phone in her handbag.

A photograph was displayed on the screen.

It showed Amelia.

Alive.

Older.

Sitting in a wheelchair.

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

“After tomorrow, Richard Coleman will finally understand why his daughter never came home.””

She ended the call.

Then she opened a message from an unsaved contact.

*The original recording is ready.*

Vanessa typed back.

*Make sure Richard sees it.*

A second message arrived.

*Are you sure you want him to know who was driving the car?*

Vanessa stared at the screen.

Then she replied.

*He deserves to know.*

She placed the phone away.

May you like

And whispered:

“Especially because it was his own son.””
