Chapter 3: The Son Who Wanted His Father Declared Insane

Richard didn't speak for nearly a minute.

The office seemed to shrink around him.

The sound of traffic outside disappeared beneath the pounding in his ears.

Samuel Whitmore printed the medical assessment and placed it on the desk.

“Richard, look at me.””

Richard raised his eyes.

“Did you ever meet this doctor?””

“No.””

“Did you ever consent to an evaluation?””

“No.””

“Did anyone ask you questions about your memory, your finances, or your ability to make decisions?””

Richard thought back over the previous month.

Then he remembered.

Michael had invited him to dinner at a private restaurant.

Vanessa had insisted on driving him home afterward.

During the ride, Michael had asked several strange questions.

Had Richard forgotten appointments recently?

Had he misplaced important documents?

Was he still comfortable managing his investments?

At the time, Richard had assumed his son was concerned about his age.

Now the questions sounded different.

“They were testing me,” Richard said.

Samuel nodded.

“It appears so.””

“They wanted me to say something they could use.””

“Possibly.””

Richard picked up the report.

The doctor had written that he displayed signs of confusion, poor judgment, and declining executive function.

The assessment claimed Richard had struggled to identify his own assets and had repeatedly forgotten the purpose of the examination.

He read the final paragraph.

Then he looked at Samuel.

“They're trying to make me disappear while I'm still alive.””

Samuel didn't soften the truth.

“Yes.””

Richard sat back.

For years, he had considered his son his greatest achievement.

He had paid for Michael's education.

He had helped him purchase his first home.

He had introduced him to business partners and given him a position at Coleman Development Group.

He had even defended Michael when the board questioned his judgment.

And now Michael was using the family name to strip him of his independence.

Samuel opened a fresh document.

“We need to respond carefully. The false medical report is serious. The security footage is useful. We also need to establish who submitted this application and whether any documents were forged.””

“Do it.””

“I will.””

Richard looked at the report again.

“Samuel, there's something else.””

“What?””

“I want you to find out whether my son has already transferred any of my properties.””

Samuel nodded.

“I'll have the records examined.””

“And I want every account connected to the family trust reviewed.””

“Understood.””

Richard leaned forward.

“Don't tell Michael.””

Samuel gave him a long look.

“Richard, I have represented you for twenty years. I would never expose you to unnecessary risk. But you must understand something. If your son believes he has already succeeded, he may become desperate when he discovers otherwise.””

Richard looked down at his hands.

“Then we should find out how far he's willing to go.””

At the mansion, Vanessa was preparing lunch when Michael entered the kitchen.

She was wearing a cream-colored blouse and tailored black trousers.

Her hair was perfectly styled.

A plate of sliced fruit sat on the island.

Michael poured himself coffee.

“Did you call the lawyer?””

Vanessa looked up.

“Not yet.””

“You said you would.””

“I wanted to make sure the paperwork was ready.””

Michael lowered his cup.

“What paperwork?””

Vanessa sighed.

“The emergency petition. We discussed this last night.””

Michael rubbed his jaw.

“I thought we were waiting.””

“Waiting for what?””

“To see what Dad does.””

Vanessa put down the knife.

“Michael, your father is a threat to our future.””

“He's sixty-eight, not ninety-eight.””

“And he just attacked me.””

“He didn't attack you.””

The words slipped out before Michael could stop them.

Vanessa slowly turned.

“What did you say?””

Michael looked uncomfortable.

“I said things happened quickly.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You watched him grab you?””

“I know what I saw.””

“Then why are you questioning me?””

Michael moved toward the refrigerator.

“I don't want another argument.””

Vanessa laughed once.

“Of course you don't.””

She picked up her phone and opened the security application.

The living room cameras showed Richard's study.

The room was empty.

She checked the front entrance.

Nothing.

Then she opened the hallway feed.

Mrs. Jenkins was walking toward the kitchen.

Vanessa immediately locked her phone.

“Michael?””

“What?””

“Where is your father?””

“In his study, probably.””

“Have you spoken to him?””

“No.””

“Did he leave the house?””

“I don't know.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“Then find out.””

Michael frowned.

“Why?””

“Because I need to know whether he has contacted anyone.””

“Who would he contact?””

Vanessa gave him a look.

“His lawyer, Michael. The man who handles all his estate documents.””

Michael's expression changed.

“You think Dad would go to Samuel?””

“I think your father is smarter than you give him credit for.””

Michael picked up his phone.

“I'll call him.””

Vanessa stopped him.

“No.””

“Why not?””

“Because if he suspects anything, he'll know we're worried.””

She walked around the island and took his hand.

“Listen to me. We need his signature on the final transfer documents. Once that happens, everything becomes much easier.””

Michael looked down at their joined hands.

“What final transfer?””

Vanessa's smile faded.

“The mansion. The commercial properties. The trust.””

“You said the transfer would happen automatically.””

“It would have, if your father had cooperated.””

Michael pulled his hand away.

“Vanessa, what exactly have you done?””

For a moment, she said nothing.

Then she opened the drawer beside the refrigerator.

She removed a thick folder and placed it in front of him.

Michael opened it.

Inside were copies of property deeds, financial authorizations, and a document bearing his father's signature.

He looked at the last page.

“This isn't his signature.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“It matches.””

“No, it doesn't.””

“Michael—”

“Look at the C. Dad never writes it like that.””

Vanessa snatched the document from him.

“You're focusing on the wrong thing.””

Michael took a step backward.

“Did you forge his signature?””

Vanessa's face hardened.

“I did what was necessary.””

Michael stared at her.

“You told me everything was legal.””

“It will be.””

“How?””

“Once the court accepts the medical assessment, your father won't be able to challenge the transfer.””

Michael looked at the report.

“You knew about the assessment?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

“Did you arrange it?””

She finally nodded.

Michael's face went pale.

“Without telling me?””

“Would you have helped me if I had told you?””

He looked away.

That was answer enough.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Michael, we are almost there. Don't become weak now.””

“That's my father.””

“And this is our life.””

“He built everything.””

“And you're the one who is supposed to inherit it.””

Michael lowered his voice.

“What if he finds out?””

Vanessa smiled.

“Then we'll make sure nobody believes him.””

At 1:20 p.m., Richard returned to the mansion.

Mrs. Jenkins opened the front door.

She took one look at him and immediately understood that something had happened.

“Mr. Coleman?””

“Is my son here?””

“In the kitchen, sir.””

“Good.””

Richard removed his coat.

He had spent the morning with Samuel, but he had deliberately left the lawyer's office without giving anyone the impression that he was preparing a legal response.

He wanted Michael to see the same father who had left the house the previous afternoon.

An old man.

A little tired.

A little shaken.

And apparently unaware of what his son was doing.

“Would you like me to prepare tea?”” Mrs. Jenkins asked.

“Not yet.””

Richard handed her his coat.

“And Mrs. Jenkins?””

“Yes, sir?””

“Did you keep the original copy of the family photographs from the study?””

She looked puzzled.

“Yes. They're in the storage cabinet.””

“Please don't move them.””

“Of course.””

Richard walked toward the kitchen.

Vanessa was standing near the island.

Michael sat on a stool with his phone in his hand.

Both looked up when Richard entered.

“Dad,” Michael said.

Richard nodded.

“Son.””

Vanessa smiled.

“Richard. I hope you're feeling better.””

“Much better, thank you.””

He looked at the fruit plate.

“May I?””

Vanessa pushed it toward him.

“Of course.””

Richard picked up a piece of apple.

Then he looked at Michael.

“I'd like to talk.””

Michael glanced at Vanessa.

“About what?””

“Yesterday.””

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“I don't think that's necessary.””

Richard ignored her.

“I want to apologize.””

Michael looked surprised.

“Dad?””

“I shouldn't have allowed things to become so heated.””

Vanessa's shoulders relaxed slightly.

Richard continued.

“I know how important your marriage is to you. I don't want to come between you and your wife.””

Michael looked at him for several seconds.

Then he nodded.

“Okay.””

Richard placed the apple back on the plate.

“There's something else.””

“What?””

“I've been thinking about what you said. About the house and the estate.””

Vanessa's eyes sharpened.

Michael straightened.

Richard continued calmly.

“Perhaps it's time we discussed the future properly.””

Vanessa exchanged a quick glance with Michael.

“What do you mean?”” she asked.

Richard gave her a small smile.

“I mean that I don't want you both worrying about what happens when I'm gone.””

Michael looked down.

“Dad, you don't have to do that.””

“I'm not getting any younger.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“That's very thoughtful of you, Richard.””

He nodded.

“Samuel can prepare everything.””

The room went silent.

Vanessa's smile faltered.

“Samuel?””

“My lawyer. He's been handling the estate for years.””

Michael looked at his wife.

Vanessa quickly recovered.

“Of course. That's sensible.””

Richard picked up his coat.

“I'll arrange a meeting next week.””

He turned toward the hallway.

Behind him, Vanessa said softly, “Richard?””

He stopped.

“Yes?””

“Would you mind if we looked after the paperwork ourselves? It might save everyone some trouble.””

Richard slowly turned.

For the first time that afternoon, he looked directly into her eyes.

“No.””

Vanessa blinked.

“I beg your pardon?””

“I said no.””

Michael stood.

“Dad, she's only trying to help.””

Richard looked at his son.

“I know.””

Then he walked away.

The moment the study door closed, Vanessa turned on Michael.

“What was that?””

Michael frowned.

“What?””

“He said Samuel would prepare everything.””

“So?””

“So we cannot let Samuel get involved!””

Michael lowered his voice.

“Why are you panicking?””

Vanessa grabbed the folder from the kitchen counter.

“Because Samuel knows the original trust structure. He knows which properties are protected. If he reviews the documents, he'll notice the discrepancies.””

Michael stared at her.

“You said the documents were ready.””

“They are.””

“Then what's the problem?””

“The problem is your father has decided to involve his lawyer.””

Michael paced toward the window.

“Maybe we should stop.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“Stop?””

“Yes. We can walk away.””

She laughed.

“You think you can walk away?””

“Why not?””

“Because you already signed the authorization documents.””

Michael froze.

“What authorization documents?””

Vanessa opened the folder and pulled out a copy.

“Your name is on these.””

Michael read the page.

It was a financial power-of-attorney authorization.

His signature appeared at the bottom.

He remembered signing it.

Vanessa had told him it was a routine document to help manage his father's household expenses.

“What did you do?””

“I filed it.””

Michael's voice dropped.

“You told me it was temporary.””

“It is.””

“Then why does it say I have authority over his accounts?””

“Because that's what we need.””

Michael shoved the paper onto the counter.

“You lied to me.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Don't pretend you're innocent, Michael. You knew what we were trying to accomplish.””

“I didn't know you were forging documents!””

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

“Lower your voice.””

He looked at her.

For the first time, she seemed less like the woman he had married and more like someone he had never truly known.

“Did you forge Dad's signature on the property transfer?””

Vanessa said nothing.

Michael backed away.

“Oh my God.””

“Stop acting shocked.””

“Vanessa!””

She grabbed his wrist.

“Listen carefully. If you walk away now, you will lose everything.””

Michael pulled free.

“I don't care.””

Vanessa's voice became icy.

“You should.””

At 3:05 p.m., Richard sat alone in his study.

A folder lay open on his desk.

He had removed the old documents from the leather notebook and placed them in chronological order.

There were three property transfers.

Two bank authorizations.

One medical assessment.

And a copy of the family trust.

He had spent thirty-seven years making sure the company remained protected from anyone who might misuse it.

But he had made one mistake.

He had trusted his son with access to documents that should never have left his control.

His phone rang.

Samuel.

“Richard, we found something.””

Richard straightened.

“What?””

“The application to have you declared incompetent was submitted using a medical report from a clinic connected to Dr. Warren.””

“I've never met him.””

“I know. We checked the appointment records. There is no appointment under your name.””

Richard's jaw tightened.

“What else?””

“The property transfer documents were filed electronically three weeks ago.””

“Were they accepted?””

“Not fully. One of the properties was flagged because the signature verification didn't match.””

Richard closed his eyes.

“Which property?””

“The mansion.””

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then Samuel continued.

“Richard, the application also lists your son as the proposed guardian of your financial interests.””

Richard looked toward the photograph on his desk.

It showed Michael at twelve years old, standing beside him after his first baseball game.

Michael was holding a trophy.

Richard remembered the boy's excitement.

He remembered how Michael had run toward him afterward, shouting that he had won.

He remembered lifting him into his arms.

And he remembered promising him that he would always be protected.

“Samuel?””

“Yes?””

“I want the house secured. No one gets access to my private documents without my approval.””

“Done.””

“And I want you to contact the court.””

“I will.””

Richard hesitated.

“There's something else.””

“What?””

“I want you to find out who Dr. Warren really is.””

Samuel paused.

“Why?””

“Because my son wouldn't know how to arrange something like this alone.””

Richard stared at the family photograph.

“Someone taught him how.””

At 4:17 p.m., the front doorbell rang.

Mrs. Jenkins answered.

A man in a dark suit stood on the doorstep.

He carried a leather briefcase and held a sealed envelope.

“Good afternoon. I'm looking for Mr. Richard Coleman.””

“May I ask who's calling?””

“I'm an investigator representing the county court.””

Mrs. Jenkins frowned.

“Is there a problem?””

The man glanced at the envelope.

“I need to speak with Mr. Coleman regarding an emergency guardianship petition.””

Mrs. Jenkins looked toward the study.

Her face tightened.

“Please wait here.””

She walked quickly down the hallway.

Richard was standing near his desk when she entered.

“Sir, there's a gentleman at the door.””

“Who?””

“He says he's from the court.””

Richard's eyes moved to the clock.

Then to the security monitor.

The investigator stood inside the entrance.

Behind him, through the glass, Richard could see a black sedan parked at the curb.

He recognized the driver.

Michael.

Richard slowly approached the monitor.

His son was sitting behind the wheel, watching the front entrance.

And in the passenger seat sat Vanessa.

She was holding a folder.

Richard turned toward Mrs. Jenkins.

“Don't let them in yet.””

She nodded.

He picked up his phone and called Samuel.

The lawyer answered immediately.

“Richard?””

“They're here.””

“Who?””

“The court investigator.””

Samuel went silent.

Then he spoke carefully.

“Richard, do not sign anything. Do not agree to an evaluation. I'm on my way.””

Richard watched the screen.

The investigator checked his watch.

Then he knocked again.

“Mr. Coleman? We need to discuss your medical condition.””

Richard's grip tightened around the phone.

“My medical condition?””

Samuel's voice sharpened.

“Richard, did he say that?””

“Yes.””

“Don't open the door.””

But before Richard could respond, another voice came from the hallway.

“It's all right, Dad. I invited him.””

Michael.

He had entered through the side door.

Vanessa followed him.

Richard turned slowly.

His son stood in the doorway, wearing the same blue polo shirt from the previous day.

Vanessa held the folder against her chest.

Michael looked uncomfortable.

Vanessa did not.

“Dad,” Michael said, “we need to get this over with.””

Richard stared at him.

“What exactly do you want?””

Michael swallowed.

“It's for your own protection.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Richard, we just want to make sure you're safe.””

Richard looked at the folder in her hands.

Then at the investigator.

Then at his son.

He finally understood why they had been so confident.

They weren't merely trying to steal his house.

They were trying to make the world believe he was incapable of defending it.

Richard slowly placed his phone on the desk, keeping the call connected.

“Very well,” he said.

Michael looked relieved.

Vanessa smiled.

Richard pulled out a chair.

“Let's hear what the court has to say.””

The investigator entered and opened his briefcase.

He removed several documents.

“Mr. Coleman, this petition alleges that you are no longer capable of independently managing your personal and financial affairs.””

Richard nodded.

“I see.””

The investigator continued.

“It also includes statements from family members and a medical evaluation.””

Richard looked at Michael.

“Family members?””

Michael shifted his weight.

“Dad, don't make this difficult.””

Richard turned back to the investigator.

“Who signed the medical report?””

The investigator checked the page.

“Dr. Warren.””

Richard nodded slowly.

“And who requested the examination?””

The investigator hesitated.

“Your son and daughter-in-law.””

Richard looked at Vanessa.

She smiled.

“It's because we love you.””

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Richard leaned forward.

“Before you proceed, I would like you to examine one document.””

He reached into his desk drawer and removed a sealed envelope.

Samuel had instructed him to keep it with him.

The investigator accepted it.

“What is this?””

“An independent medical assessment conducted by a physician of my choosing yesterday morning.””

Michael's face changed.

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

Richard continued.

“It confirms that I am fully capable of managing my affairs.””

The investigator opened the envelope.

Inside were the results, the physician's credentials, and a signed statement.

He read the first page.

Then the second.

His expression became increasingly serious.

“Mr. Coleman, may I ask why you obtained this assessment?””

Richard looked directly at his son.

“Because someone is trying to convince the court that I'm losing my mind.””

Michael stepped forward.

“Dad, that's not what this is about.””

Richard raised one hand.

“Please. Let the gentleman finish.””

The investigator turned another page.

Then he stopped.

His eyes moved to a separate document attached to the assessment.

“What is this?””

Richard looked at it.

“A copy of the security footage from my living room.””

Vanessa went pale.

Michael stared at the envelope.

Richard spoke quietly.

“It shows exactly what happened yesterday.””

The investigator looked at the laptop Danielle had prepared.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“Mrs. Coleman, would you like to explain why the footage shows you applying lipstick to your own cheek before making the accusation?””

Vanessa's lips parted.

No sound came out.

Michael turned toward her.

“Vanessa?””

She looked at him.

And for the first time, the woman who had controlled every conversation in that house had absolutely nothing to say.

But Richard wasn't finished.

He removed one final document from the drawer.

It was a copy of the forged property transfer.

He placed it on the desk.

“There's something else,” he said.

The investigator looked down.

Richard pointed to the signature at the bottom.

“That is not my signature.””

Michael's face drained of color.

Vanessa took one step backward.

Richard looked at both of them.

“And I believe I know who forged it.””

His phone vibrated.

Samuel was still on the line.

A new message appeared.

*Richard, we found the original beneficiary record. Michael isn't the only person listed on the forged transfer.*

Richard opened the attachment.

His eyes moved to the second name.

Then he looked up at Camille, who had just entered the study through the hallway.

She was no longer wearing her black dress.

She carried a small handbag and looked terrified.

Richard stared at her.

“Camille?””

She lowered her eyes.

The investigator closed his briefcase.

Michael turned toward the woman.

“Why are you here?””

Camille's voice trembled.

“Because I can't keep lying anymore.””

Vanessa stepped toward her.

“Don't you dare.””

Camille took a folded document from her handbag.

She placed it on Richard's desk.

Then she whispered:

“Mr. Coleman, Michael didn't plan this alone. Vanessa promised him the mansion, but she promised someone else something much bigger.””

Richard unfolded the document.

At the top was the name of the company that would receive ownership of the Coleman estate.

And beneath it was a signature he recognized immediately.

His own.

But this time, the signature wasn't forged.

It was from a document he had signed twenty-five years earlier.

May you like

A document that could change everything.

*Because Vanessa had just made one fatal mistake: she had chosen to steal an estate that Richard had never legally owned alone.*
