Chapter 5: The Secret Behind The Kitchen Door
I didn’t breathe.
I couldn’t.
Daniel was standing beside my hospital bed, phone pressed to his ear.
He didn’t know I could hear.
He didn’t know the speaker was loud.
His mother’s voice filled the room.
“Daniel, are you listening?””
He looked at me.
Then quickly turned away.
“I’m here.””
Margaret lowered her voice.
“Your wife cannot talk to the police.””
My hands became cold.
Daniel whispered:
“She already did.””
There was silence.
Then Margaret said something that destroyed the last piece of hope I had left.
“Then you need to fix this.””
Fix this.
Not explain.
Not apologize.
Fix.
Daniel ended the call.
Slowly, he turned around.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then he said:
“You misunderstood.””
I almost laughed.
“Did I?””
“Yes.””
“I heard everything.””
Daniel ran his hand through his hair.
“You don’t understand what happened.””
“Then explain.””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
That silence was my answer.
A few hours later, my father returned.
One look at my face and he knew.
“He was involved?””
I didn’t answer.
I didn’t need to.
My father closed his eyes.
When he opened them, the sadness was gone.
Only anger remained.
“Your husband chose them.””
I whispered:
“I loved him.””
My father sat beside me.
“I know.””
That was the hardest part.
Love didn’t disappear just because someone hurt you.
Sometimes, it stayed there.
And that made the pain worse.
The police returned with new information.
They had searched the house.
They found containers hidden behind the kitchen cabinets.
The same chemicals found in my stomach.
My hands covered my mouth.
The officer spoke carefully.
“Mrs. Carter, we also found something else.””
“What?””
He placed a small bag on the table.
Inside was my old phone.
The one Daniel told me had been accidentally damaged months ago.
I stared at it.
“Why do you have that?””
The officer looked at my father.
“Because the phone contained recordings.””
My heart stopped.
“Recordings?””
The officer nodded.
“Your husband had saved audio files.””
I felt confused.
“Why?””
The officer looked uncomfortable.
“Because he knew what his family was doing.””
The room became silent.
Daniel didn’t just fail to protect me.
He documented it.
He knew.
My father whispered:
“Why would he keep proof?””
The officer answered:
“That’s what we’re trying to understand.””
That night, they played one recording.
Daniel’s voice filled the room.
“Mom, you can’t keep treating her like this.””
Margaret replied:
“She won’t leave. She’s too weak.””
Daniel said:
“What if something happens?””
Margaret laughed.
“Then nobody will believe her.””
I closed my eyes.
The betrayal hurt more than the poison.
Because a stranger hurting me would have been easier to accept.
But the man who promised forever had stood nearby and watched.
Then another recording began.
This one was newer.
Daniel’s voice sounded nervous.
“Mom, I think she knows.””
Margaret answered:
“Then we need to make sure she can’t tell anyone.””
My father stood up.
His face was full of fury.
But before he could speak, the officer’s phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“Are you sure?””
He looked at me.
“Mrs. Carter…”
My heart started racing.
“What?””
The officer slowly lowered the phone.
“We found another person connected to this.””
“Who?””
He looked at the paperwork in his hand.
Then he said a name I never expected.
May you like
A name that meant the entire truth was much bigger than Daniel’s family.
“It’s someone who has been inside your house for years.””
