Chapter 6: The Person Behind the Door
The officer’s words stayed in the hospital room long after he stopped speaking.
“It’s someone who has been inside your house for years.””
I stared at him.
My mind searched through every person who had ever walked through that front door.
The neighbors.
The relatives.
The housekeeper.
The friends who visited during holidays.
Then my eyes moved to my father.
He looked just as confused as I felt.
“Who?”” I whispered.
The officer opened the folder in his hands.
“Before I tell you, I need you to understand something. We’re still investigating. But the evidence points to a person who had access to the kitchen, the food supplies, and the family’s private conversations.””
My fingers tightened around the blanket.
“Who?””
The officer looked directly at me.
“Your husband’s sister.””
Emily.
For a few seconds, I felt nothing.
Then everything hit at once.
Emily’s laughter at the dinner table.
Emily watching me eat from the bowl.
Emily saying, “Some people don’t even get leftovers.””
I covered my mouth.
“No.””
My father leaned forward.
“Why would she do this?””
The officer placed several printed documents on the table.
“We found messages between Emily and your mother-in-law.””
I looked at the papers.
The first message was dated months earlier.
Emily: She still thinks Daniel loves her.
Margaret: He does. That’s why we need to make her feel small.
My stomach turned.
The next message was worse.
Emily: How long do we have to keep pretending she belongs here?
Margaret: Until Daniel realizes she’s a burden.
I couldn’t breathe.
They hadn’t just been cruel.
They had planned it.
For months.
Maybe years.
My father picked up the papers.
His hands shook.
“These people lived with my daughter.””
The officer nodded.
“Yes.””
My father looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
I immediately shook my head.
“Dad, don’t.””
“I should have seen it.””
“You couldn’t.””
“I should have asked more questions.””
His voice cracked.
I reached for his hand.
The same hand that had held mine when I was a child.
“You came when I needed you.””
He looked away, wiping his eyes.
A knock came at the door.
Everyone turned.
A woman stood outside.
A nurse.
“Mrs. Carter?””
“Yes?””
“There’s someone here to see you.””
My heart immediately tightened.
“Who?””
The nurse hesitated.
“Your husband.””
My father stood up.
“No.””
The nurse looked surprised.
“He says he needs to speak with her.””
I looked at my father.
Part of me wanted him to tell the nurse to send Daniel away.
But another part of me needed answers.
I nodded.
“Let him in.””
My father looked at me.
“Are you sure?””
“No,” I whispered.
“But I need to hear him.””
A minute later, Daniel entered.
He looked exhausted.
His shirt was wrinkled.
His eyes were red.
For the first time in years, he looked afraid.
Not angry.
Not annoyed.
Afraid.
He stopped when he saw my father.
“Sir—”
My father raised his hand.
“Don’t call me that.””
Daniel swallowed.
“I know you’re angry.””
“You have no idea.””
Daniel looked at me.
“I came here because I need to explain.””
I stared at him.
“Explain what?””
He stepped closer.
“That I didn’t know what my mother and Emily were planning.””
The room went silent.
I studied his face.
“You recorded them.””
He froze.
The color drained from his face.
“You found the recordings.””
“Yes.””
“Then you know I tried to stop them.””
I laughed quietly.
A painful sound.
“Tried?””
Daniel looked down.
“I was scared.””
“Of them?””
“Yes.””
I stared at him.
“You were scared of your family, so you let them hurt me?””
His eyes filled with shame.
“I thought I could handle it.””
“You thought?””
My voice rose.
“You watched me sit on the floor.””
He looked away.
“You watched me eat that food.””
“I know.””
“You heard them insult me.””
“I know.””
“Then what exactly did you do?””
He had no answer.
That was the truth.
Daniel sat down.
“I was raised to obey my mother.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“No?””
“You were raised to protect the people you love. You just decided I wasn’t one of them.””
The words hurt him.
I saw it.
But I didn’t apologize.
Because I had spent years apologizing for pain other people caused.
Daniel wiped his face.
“There’s something else you need to know.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
He looked at the floor.
“My mother didn’t start this.””
My father stepped forward.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel whispered:
“There was someone else who encouraged her.””
The officer immediately looked up.
“Who?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then he said:
“Someone who wanted my wife gone before I even married her.””
I felt a chill.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at me.
May you like
And the name he said made my entire world shift.
“Your ex-fiancé.””
