Chapter 7: The Betrayal Before My Marriage

For a moment, nobody moved.

The room felt frozen.

“My ex-fiancé?””

The words left my mouth like I didn’t understand their meaning.

Daniel nodded slowly.

“His name is Michael.””

I stared at him.

Michael.

A name I had buried years ago.

A person I thought was part of my past.

“How does he have anything to do with this?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Because he never stopped blaming you.””

My father’s expression darkened.

“What are you talking about?””

I looked at Daniel.

“Tell me.””

Daniel took a deep breath.

“Before we got married, Michael contacted my family.””

My heart dropped.

“Why?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because he wanted revenge.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Michael had been my college sweetheart.

We were engaged for two years.

Then I discovered he had been cheating.

Not once.

Not accidentally.

For months.

When I ended the engagement, he begged me to stay.

I refused.

He told me I would regret leaving him.

But I never imagined this.

“He wanted revenge because you embarrassed him,” Daniel said quietly.

I laughed bitterly.

“Embarrassed him?””

My father stepped closer.

“She left because he betrayed her.””

Daniel nodded.

“I know.””

“Then why did your family listen to him?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Because he lied.””

“How?””

“He told my mother you married me to use my family.””

I felt sick.

“What?””

“He told them you were only interested in money.””

My father looked furious.

“That’s a lie.””

“Yes,” Daniel said.

“I know that now.””

I looked at him.

“Now?””

That word hurt.

“Daniel, you have known me for six years.””

“I know.””

“You watched me cook, clean, and sacrifice everything.””

“I know.””

“Did you ever believe that?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

That silence was painful.

Finally, he whispered:

“No.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

“I didn’t believe it completely. But I let myself wonder.””

I looked away.

Because somehow that hurt more than anger.

He had questioned my love.

The man I married had allowed someone else’s lies to poison our marriage.

The officer cleared his throat.

“We need to understand the connection between Michael and your husband’s family.””

Daniel nodded.

“There are emails.””

My eyes widened.

“What emails?””

“Between Michael and my mother.””

The officer looked interested.

“Where?””

“On my mother’s laptop.””

My father stepped forward.

“Then we get it.””

The officer nodded.

“We already requested a search warrant.””

The next day, we sat in a conference room at the police station.

I felt like I was watching someone else’s life.

My marriage.

My home.

My family.

Everything had become evidence.

A detective placed photographs on the table.

“We found communications between Michael and Margaret Carter.””

I looked at the pictures.

Messages.

Plans.

Conversations.

Then one sentence caught my eye.

Michael: Once Daniel sees how difficult she is, he’ll leave her.

Margaret: Don’t worry. We know how to break people.

I closed my eyes.

My hands trembled.

The detective continued.

“There’s more.””

He placed another document down.

“A payment record.””

My father leaned forward.

“Payment?””

The detective nodded.

“Michael transferred money to Emily.””

My stomach turned.

“How much?””

The detective looked serious.

“Enough to make this a criminal matter.””

I stared at the paper.

The truth was finally appearing.

Piece by piece.

But there was one thing I couldn’t understand.

I turned to Daniel.

“You knew about Michael.””

Daniel looked down.

“I suspected.””

“When?””

“Two years ago.””

My heart stopped.

“Two years ago?””

He nodded.

“I found some messages.””

I felt numb.

“You knew?””

“I didn’t know everything.””

“But you knew something was wrong.””

“Yes.””

“And you stayed silent.””

Daniel started crying.

“I was a coward.””

I looked at him.

For the first time, I believed him.

But believing someone’s regret didn’t erase what they had done.

A detective entered the room suddenly.

“Sorry to interrupt.””

Everyone turned.

“We found something else at the Carter house.””

“What?”” Daniel asked.

The detective held a small evidence bag.

Inside was a handwritten note.

My name was written on the front.

I felt my heart stop.

“Where did you find that?””

The detective looked at me.

“Hidden inside the kitchen cabinet.””

My father grabbed my hand.

The detective placed the note on the table.

“We believe this was meant for you.””

My fingers shook as I opened it.

There were only six words written inside.

May you like

Six words that made my blood run cold.

*“You should have disappeared years ago.””*
