Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Smile
By six that evening, the mansion had become a place where nobody wanted to speak above a whisper.
Lily sat on the living-room sofa in dry clothes, a blanket tucked around her legs. Camille stayed beside her, reading the same picture book for the third time because the little girl kept asking her not to stop.
Renee stood near the kitchen doorway, watching the hall.
Daniel had called his wife, Lauren, and told her to come home immediately.
He had not told her everything.
Not over the phone.
He couldn't bear to say the words while she was still driving.
When Lauren arrived, she found Daniel standing beside the fireplace, holding a glass of water he had barely touched.
“Where's Lily?””
“Living room. Camille's with her.””
Lauren dropped her handbag onto a chair.
“Daniel, what happened?””
He looked at her.
“Something happened at the pool.””
Her face drained of color.
“Is she hurt?””
“She's awake. She's talking. I'm arranging for her to be checked, but she's safe right now.””
“Then why are you looking at me like that?””
Daniel took a breath.
“Renee called me. She said my mother was trying to kill Lily.””
Lauren didn't move.
For several seconds, she simply stared at him.
Then she shook her head.
“No.””
“Lauren—”
“No. Don't say something like that unless you know what you're talking about.””
“I know what Renee told me.””
“And what does Evelyn say?””
“She says she didn't do anything.””
Lauren pressed a hand against her forehead.
“Of course she does.””
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Lauren looked toward the living room, making sure Lily couldn't hear them.
“It means your mother has been making me feel crazy for months.””
The glass slipped slightly in Daniel's hand.
“What are you talking about?””
Lauren lowered her voice.
“Remember the bracelet Lily wore at Christmas? The gold one your mother gave her?””
“Yeah.””
“She told Lily it was a special family heirloom. Then, a few weeks later, I found it in Evelyn's bedroom.””
Daniel blinked.
“Maybe she was keeping it safe.””
“That's what I told myself.””
Lauren's expression tightened.
“Then there was the medication incident. Lily came home from Evelyn's house one afternoon with a headache and said Grandma had given her something to make her sleepy. When I asked Evelyn about it, she said Lily was exaggerating.””
Daniel set the glass down.
“What did she give her?””
“I never found out. Evelyn told me I was being hysterical, and you said she would never do anything to hurt Lily.””
He remembered.
He remembered sitting at the kitchen island, tired after a twelve-hour workday, telling his wife to let it go.
He remembered how grateful he had been when the argument ended.
“Why didn't you tell me again?””
“I did.””
Lauren's voice cracked.
“I told you again and again. Every time, you explained her behavior for her.””
Daniel looked down.
There was no defense that could make that sound better.
“I was wrong,” he said.
Lauren's eyes filled, but she didn't cry.
“Then don't make the same mistake tonight.””
From the living room, Lily called for her mother.
Lauren rushed to her.
The moment Lily saw her, she climbed off the sofa and ran into her arms.
“Mommy!””
“Oh, baby.””
Lauren dropped to her knees and hugged her daughter so tightly that Lily squeaked.
“I was scared.””
“I know. I'm here.””
“Grandma's mad.””
Lauren pulled back.
“Why do you think that?””
Lily looked at Daniel, then at Camille.
Her small hands twisted the edge of her shirt.
“Because I didn't do what she wanted.””
Lauren went still.
“What did she want, sweetheart?””
Lily swallowed.
“She said if I lived with her, I could have a room with pink walls and a big princess bed. She said Daddy would be busy with work, and you would be busy worrying about everything.””
Daniel crouched beside them.
“Lily, you don't have to choose where you live. That's for Mommy and Daddy to decide.””
“But Grandma said I should tell you I wanted her.””
Lauren closed her eyes.
“How long has she been saying things like that?””
Lily looked confused.
“I don't know.””
“Was it just today?””
The little girl hesitated.
Then she shook her head.
“She said it when you were at the store. And when Daddy went to his office.””
Daniel felt a sickening weight settle in his stomach.
“How many times, Lily?””
“I don't know, Daddy.””
She began to cry again.
“I'm sorry. I didn't want to make Grandma mad.””
Daniel pulled her into his arms.
“You never have to be sorry for telling us the truth.””
Lauren looked at him over their daughter's head.
There was no anger in her face now.
Only exhaustion.
And the terrible knowledge that they had both allowed Evelyn too close to their child without asking what she wanted in return.
That evening, Daniel asked Renee and Camille to stay while he reviewed the household security footage.
The mansion had cameras covering the driveway, front entrance, side garden, and several outdoor areas. For privacy reasons, there were none inside the bedrooms or bathrooms, but the pool area was clearly visible.
Daniel opened the security application on his laptop.
His fingers hovered above the keyboard.
“Are you sure you want to see this?”” Lauren asked.
“No,” he admitted.
“But I need to know what happened.””
He selected the backyard camera and rewound the footage.
The image showed Evelyn walking onto the patio at 3:12 p.m.
She carried her handbag and looked toward the house.
Then she approached the pool chair.
Daniel leaned closer to the screen.
His mother picked up the orange vest and held it in front of her.
Her body blocked part of the camera's view, but the recording clearly showed her glancing repeatedly toward the French doors and the garden path.
Then she lowered the vest onto the chair and bent over it.
Daniel paused the footage.
“Can you zoom in?””
“I can enlarge the image,” Renee said, “but we may not be able to see her hands clearly.””
He enlarged the frame.
The picture became grainier.
Evelyn's face was unmistakable. Her expression was focused, her jaw set, her eyes flicking toward the house.
Daniel felt his stomach twist.
He resumed the recording.
Evelyn straightened, lifted the vest, and called Lily over.
The next minutes were worse.
The footage showed Lily entering the shallow section of the pool. It showed Evelyn standing nearby, watching the girl.
It showed the vest begin to sag.
It showed Lily turn toward her grandmother.
And it showed Evelyn walk away.
Daniel stopped the video.
Nobody spoke.
Lauren covered her mouth with one hand.
Camille stared at the frozen image.
Renee's eyes filled with tears.
“That's what I saw,” she whispered.
Daniel stared at his mother's face on the screen.
He had spent his life believing that love meant giving family the benefit of the doubt.
Now he understood how easily that belief could become permission.
“Save the footage,” he said.
“Make a copy. Don't delete anything.””
“I'll do it,” Renee replied.
Daniel closed the laptop halfway.
“I'm calling the police.””
Lauren nodded immediately.
“Good.””
But before he could reach for his phone, footsteps sounded on the staircase.
Evelyn appeared in the hallway.
She had changed into a pale-blue blouse and carried a small leather folder beneath one arm.
Her expression was composed.
“Daniel,” she said, “we need to talk privately.””
He stood.
“About what?””
Evelyn glanced at Lauren.
“Family matters.””
Lauren rose from the sofa.
“If it concerns Lily, I'm staying.””
For a moment, Evelyn looked genuinely irritated.
Then she smiled.
“Of course, darling. You're her mother.””
She placed the folder on the coffee table.
“I've been thinking about what happened today. Everyone is upset, and I don't want this misunderstanding to destroy our family.””
Daniel didn't touch the folder.
“What misunderstanding?””
Evelyn opened it herself.
Inside were neatly organized papers, several printed photographs of Lily, and a document bearing Lauren's name.
Lauren stepped forward.
“What is that?””
“Something I prepared because I care about Lily's future.””
Evelyn slid the document across the table.
Daniel picked it up.
The heading made his blood run cold.
*PETITION FOR TEMPORARY GUARDIANSHIP.*
Lauren stared at her own name.
“Why am I on this?””
Evelyn folded her hands.
“Because a child needs stability. And because, unfortunately, not every mother is equipped to provide it.””
Daniel looked up slowly.
“Are you trying to take our daughter away from us?””
“Don't be dramatic.””
“You prepared legal papers naming yourself as Lily's guardian.””
“I prepared options.””
Lauren's voice trembled with fury.
“After what happened at the pool?””
Evelyn's eyes sharpened.
“Precisely because of what happened at the pool.””
The room fell silent.
Daniel stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Evelyn lifted her chin.
“Children have accidents. Parents panic. Household employees exaggerate. Someone needs to make rational decisions when emotions take over.””
“You left Lily struggling in the water,” Daniel said.
“I did not.””
“The camera recorded you walking away.””
For the first time, Evelyn's composure cracked.
Her fingers tightened around the edge of the folder.
“You have no idea what you think you saw.””
“I watched the footage.””
Evelyn's eyes moved to the laptop.
Then to Renee.
Then to Camille.
Her face hardened.
“So this is what you've done,” she said.
“You've turned my own family against me.””
“No,” Lauren replied.
“We're finally listening to our daughter.””
Evelyn laughed once, without warmth.
“Your daughter is six years old. She doesn't understand what she needs.””
“She understands when she's frightened.””
“Children are easily influenced.””
Lauren stepped closer.
“Are you saying we influenced her into being afraid of you?””
Evelyn didn't answer.
Daniel moved between his mother and the coffee table.
“Leave the papers here.””
She stared at him.
“Excuse me?””
“Leave them. Don't take anything else from this room.””
For a long moment, mother and son looked at each other.
Then Evelyn closed the folder with a sharp snap.
“You will regret humiliating me.””
Daniel didn't move.
“Maybe. But I'm not sending Lily anywhere with you.””
Evelyn picked up her handbag.
At the doorway, she stopped and turned back.
“You think you know everything because you've watched a few minutes of video.””
Her gaze settled on Lauren.
“Ask your wife what she was doing the week before Lily was born. Ask her why she begged me not to tell you what I discovered.””
Lauren's face turned white.
Daniel looked at his wife.
“What is she talking about?””
Lauren's lips parted.
Nothing came out.
Evelyn watched the silence spread across the room, and the corner of her mouth lifted.
Then she walked upstairs.
Daniel turned fully toward Lauren.
“What did my mother discover?””
Lauren stared at the staircase.
When she finally looked back at him, there were tears in her eyes.
May you like
“Daniel,” she whispered, “there's something about Lily's birth that I never told you.””
And before she could say another word, a door slammed upstairs.
