Chapter 6: The Name on the Second File

Lauren was waiting at her sister's kitchen table when Daniel arrived.

The temporary care authorization lay between them, flattened beneath a glass paperweight.

Her sister, Monica, stood at the counter, keeping an eye on Lily in the next room.

The little girl was drawing with colored pencils, her orange safety vest incident now replaced by the familiar routine of crayons, cartoons, and a stuffed rabbit tucked under her arm.

Daniel entered and immediately reached for Lauren's hand.

“Are you all right?””

She nodded, though her eyes were swollen.

“I haven't slept.””

“Neither have I.””

He sat opposite her.

“Show me exactly what you found.””

Lauren pushed the document toward him.

“I found it inside an envelope with my hospital discharge papers. Your mother gave me the envelope when I came home. She said it contained documents I might need for Lily's medical care.””

Daniel studied the page.

The form was brief. It identified Lauren as Lily's mother and Evelyn as a temporary caregiver authorized to assist with certain decisions under specified circumstances.

But the wording was vague.

It did not clearly establish guardianship, and it contained no court order.

At the bottom, a line stated that the authorization required subsequent confirmation.

Daniel took photographs of every page.

“Melissa needs to see the original.””

“I'll give it to her.””

Lauren wrapped her arms around herself.

“Daniel, I need to tell you something else.””

He looked up.

“Go ahead.””

“After Lily was born, I was still recovering from surgery. I couldn't walk without help, and I was on medication. Your mother handled a lot of the paperwork because I trusted her to help.””

Daniel listened carefully.

“She told me one of the hospital forms had been completed incorrectly. She said the hospital needed my signature to correct it.””

“Did you sign something without reading it?””

“I thought I was signing an administrative correction. I didn't understand that she was asking me to authorize her to make decisions for Lily.””

“Why didn't you tell me about it afterward?””

“Because I forgot the details. I was exhausted. I was trying to recover, and when I finally asked her about it months later, she told me the paperwork had been discarded.””

Daniel leaned back.

“Mom told me she destroyed it, too.””

Lauren looked at him.

“She knew we would never agree to it if we understood what she wanted.””

The silence that followed was broken by a small voice.

“Mommy?””

Lily stood in the doorway holding her drawing.

Lauren immediately rose.

“Hi, sweetheart.””

“Can I show Daddy my picture?””

“Of course.””

Lily hurried over and placed the paper in front of Daniel.

It showed a blue house, a yellow sun, and three stick figures holding hands. One figure had long hair, one had a beard, and the smallest had two large circles on her head representing puff buns.

Daniel smiled despite himself.

“That's beautiful.””

“That's our house,” Lily explained.

“That's you, Mommy, and me.””

“It's perfect.””

She pointed toward the pool she had drawn beside the house.

“And that's where Camille saved me.””

Daniel's smile faded.

“I'm glad she was there.””

Lily lowered her voice.

“Daddy, are we going home?””

“Not today, sweetheart.””

“Why?””

“Because Mommy and I need to make sure everything is safe.””

Lily looked down at her drawing.

“Is Grandma going to be there?””

Daniel knelt beside her chair.

“Not while we're figuring things out.””

She considered this.

“Can I stay with Aunt Monica?””

“For as long as you need to.””

Lily wrapped her arms around him.

“Okay.””

Daniel held her for a moment longer than usual.

When she returned to the next room, he turned back to Lauren.

“We need to get the hospital's complete records.””

“I've already called.””

“What did they say?””

“They're processing the request. They said they may need to review older documents because something was added after the original record was created.””

Daniel felt the same cold uneasiness return.

“Did they tell you what was added?””

“No.””

He stood.

“Then we wait for the official records, and Melissa handles the legal side. We're not going to guess our way through this.””

Lauren nodded.

For the first time since the previous afternoon, they seemed to be working together instead of defending themselves against one another.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

It was Renee.

“Mr. Carter, I'm sorry to bother you.””

“What's happened?””

“Your mother is in the office. She's looking for something.””

“What do you mean?””

“She asked me where the old hospital papers were kept. I told her I didn't know. Then she went through the desk drawers herself.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“Did she take anything?””

“I couldn't see. But when she left, she locked the office door.””

“Did you see her leave the house?””

“Yes, sir. About ten minutes ago.””

Daniel looked at Lauren.

“Can you stay here with Lily?””

“Of course.””

He called Melissa, explained the situation, and asked what he should do.

“Don't break into anything or confront her physically,” the attorney said.

“If you believe she removed relevant documents, preserve the security footage and make a record of what Renee observed. We'll address the rest through proper channels.””

Daniel thanked her and ended the call.

Then he returned to the mansion.

Evelyn's car was gone.

The office door was locked, but the security system showed no signs of forced entry. Daniel used his own key to open it.

The desk drawers were open.

Several folders lay scattered across the carpet.

On the desktop sat an empty space where the manila envelope had been.

Daniel checked the box.

The envelope was missing.

He called Renee into the room.

“Did you see her take it?””

“No, sir. I saw her searching the desk, but I didn't see what she carried out.””

“Did she say where she was going?””

“No. She just told me she had an appointment.””

Daniel stood in the middle of the office.

His mother had spent the previous evening insisting that he had misunderstood her. She had claimed the hospital papers were meaningless, then searched for them as soon as she realized he had found them.

He photographed the room and the scattered documents.

Then he checked the security footage.

The camera showed Evelyn entering the office at 12:42 p.m. She opened the desk drawers, removed several folders, and examined their contents.

At 12:49, she slipped a manila envelope into her handbag.

At 12:53, she left the room.

Daniel saved the original recording and created a separate copy for Melissa.

He was about to close the security application when he noticed another recording from the previous evening.

It showed Evelyn walking through the hallway after everyone had gone to bed.

She paused outside Lily's bedroom.

Then she entered.

Daniel leaned toward the screen.

The camera captured only the doorway and part of the room. He couldn't see what Evelyn did inside, but she remained there for nearly four minutes.

When she emerged, she was carrying something small.

A white envelope.

Daniel felt his heartbeat quicken.

He searched the following recordings.

At 1:17 a.m., Evelyn returned to the office.

She opened the desk drawer, removed a second folder, and placed the white envelope inside.

Then she locked the drawer and left.

Daniel sat back.

What had she taken from Lily's room?

And what had she hidden in the office?

He called Lauren.

“I'm coming to get you and Lily. We're going to stay somewhere else tonight.””

“What happened?””

“My mother searched the office and took the hospital envelope. I also found footage of her entering Lily's bedroom last night.””

Lauren went silent.

“Daniel, what was she doing in there?””

“I don't know.””

“Did she take something?””

“Yes.””

“Then we need to find out what.””

Daniel returned to the office and checked the remaining drawers.

The bottom drawer contained old insurance files and a stack of property records. Behind them, he discovered a thin black folder that hadn't been there before—or that he had simply overlooked.

Inside were several printed emails, copies of legal correspondence, and a document bearing the name of a woman he didn't recognize.

*Dr. Patricia Wells.*

Beneath the name was the heading:

*Confidential Consultation — Family Identity Review.*

Daniel read the first page.

It referenced a request for clarification concerning the original newborn records from the night Lily was born.

The document did not establish what the discrepancy was, or whether any mistake had actually occurred.

But a handwritten note in the margin caught his eye.

Do not disclose until verification is complete.

The note was signed with his mother's initials.

E.C.

Daniel sat motionless.

The file contained a telephone number and a dated appointment confirmation. He photographed the pages and sent them to Melissa, who replied that she would investigate the document's provenance before drawing any conclusions.

Daniel kept reading.

The final page was a copy of a letter addressed to Evelyn.

Mrs. Carter,

We cannot confirm the conclusion you have suggested on the basis of the information currently available. The historical record requires formal review, and any determination must be supported by verified documentation.

Please do not represent this preliminary inquiry as an established finding.

Daniel read the paragraph twice.

His mother had been investigating Lily's identity.

But the letter specifically said that nothing had been established.

A preliminary inquiry was not proof of anything.

He took a photograph of the letter and placed the folder in a secure drawer.

Then he noticed a final sheet tucked into the back cover.

It was a handwritten note in Evelyn's unmistakable script.

If Daniel discovers the file, he must never see the second report.

Daniel's breath caught.

Below the sentence was an address, a date, and a name.

Dr. Patricia Wells.

The appointment was scheduled for the following morning.

And beneath it, in darker ink, Evelyn had written six words that made Daniel's blood run cold.

Ask her who Lily's biological father is.
