Chapter 4: The Secret Lauren Buried

“There's something about Lily's birth that I never told you.””

Lauren's words hung in the living room long after Evelyn's footsteps disappeared upstairs.

Daniel stared at his wife.

“What does my mother know?””

Lauren glanced toward the staircase, then toward the living room where Camille was keeping Lily occupied with a picture book. Her hands trembled as she reached for the glass of water on the coffee table.

“I need you to promise me something first.””

“Lauren, our daughter nearly drowned today. My mother has prepared papers to take her away from us. And now you're telling me there's a secret about Lily's birth?””

“I know how that sounds.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

Lauren flinched.

Daniel immediately regretted raising his voice, but he couldn't pull the words back.

For years, he had believed that his marriage was built on honesty. He and Lauren had weathered financial setbacks, long workdays, and the exhaustion of raising a child. They had argued, apologized, and made up.

He had never imagined there was something important enough for her to hide from him.

Lauren sat down.

“When I was pregnant with Lily, your mother came to the hospital almost every day. You remember that.””

“Of course.””

“She kept telling me I wasn't eating enough. That I was too emotional. That I wasn't prepared to be a mother.””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“Mom has always been controlling.””

“She told me you were worried about me.””

“I was worried about you. You were exhausted, and the pregnancy was difficult.””

“I know. But one night, when you had gone home to shower, she came into my hospital room with a folder.””

Daniel's expression changed.

“What was in it?””

“Documents. Medical forms. Financial papers. Things I didn't understand at the time.””

“Why would she bring you financial papers in a hospital?””

“Because she said she was protecting the family.””

Lauren looked down at her hands.

“She told me that if anything happened to me during delivery, she wanted to make sure Lily would be taken care of. She said she had already spoken to a lawyer about becoming Lily's temporary guardian.””

Daniel stared at her.

“She did what?””

“She said it was only a precaution. I was heavily medicated, Daniel. I had been in labor for hours. I couldn't think clearly, and I was terrified something would happen to the baby.””

“Did you sign anything?””

Lauren hesitated.

“I signed a form acknowledging that she had discussed the possibility with me. I didn't sign away my parental rights.””

Daniel rose and began pacing.

“And you never told me?””

“I thought it was an isolated incident. After Lily was born, your mother acted as if nothing had happened. When I asked about the papers, she said she'd destroyed them.””

“Did you believe her?””

“I wanted to.””

Daniel stopped near the window.

Outside, the pool reflected the last golden light of the afternoon. The orange vest had been removed from the deck, but he could still picture Lily struggling in the water.

He turned back.

“What does that have to do with what happened today?””

“I don't know.””

“Lauren.””

“I don't know!”” she repeated, her voice breaking.

“I don't know why she brought it up tonight. I don't know what she has planned. But when she said I should ask what she discovered, I knew she was threatening me.””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“What exactly did she discover?””

Lauren's eyes filled.

“After Lily was born, I had a severe complication. I needed emergency surgery, and for a few hours, the doctors weren't sure how quickly I would recover. Your mother was there when they discussed it.””

“I remember. You were in intensive care overnight.””

“She told me later that you had been terrified. She said she had watched you fall apart, and she promised herself she would never allow our family to be vulnerable like that again.””

Daniel frowned.

“That doesn't explain anything.””

“No. But it explains why she became obsessed with having control over Lily.””

Lauren took a shaky breath.

“There was another thing.””

She reached into her handbag and removed a small, folded envelope.

Daniel recognized the handwriting on the front immediately.

His mother's.

*For Lauren. In case the truth ever comes out.*

“Where did you get that?”” he asked.

“I found it in the nursery closet three months ago. It was tucked behind a box of old baby clothes.””

“You've had it for three months?””

“I opened it. There was a letter inside, but I couldn't bring myself to show you.””

“Why not?””

“Because I was afraid of what it would do to your relationship with her.””

Daniel stared at her in disbelief.

“My relationship with her? Lauren, she tried to take our daughter away from us.””

“We didn't know that then!””

“We knew she was crossing boundaries. We knew she was making you uncomfortable. We knew she was saying things to Lily that she shouldn't have been saying.””

“I know.””

“Then why did you protect her?””

Lauren began to cry silently.

“Because every time I challenged her, she told me I was destroying your family. She said you would never forgive me if I made you choose between your mother and your wife.””

Daniel felt the anger inside him shift.

He had heard similar words from Evelyn before. She had a remarkable ability to make every disagreement sound like an act of betrayal.

But Lauren had been carrying the consequences alone.

He sat beside her.

“I'm sorry,” he said.

She looked at him through her tears.

“I should have told you.””

“Yes. You should have.””

He reached for the envelope.

“Can I read it?””

Lauren nodded.

The paper inside was yellowed at the edges, as though it had been handled many times. Daniel unfolded it carefully.

His mother's handwriting was neat and unmistakable.

Lauren,

If you're reading this, then something has happened that I could not prevent.

You have always misunderstood my intentions. I wanted to protect Daniel and the child he loves. I have watched him sacrifice everything for this family, and I refuse to stand by while someone takes what belongs to him.

Daniel's jaw tightened.

He continued.

There are things about Lily's birth that you do not understand. There were decisions made in that hospital that should never have been left to chance.

I have the original records. I have the names of the people involved. If you ever decide to turn my son against me, remember that the truth can destroy more than one life.

Evelyn.

Daniel read the letter twice.

Then a third time.

“What original records?”” he whispered.

Lauren shook her head.

“I don't know.””

“Did she ever explain what she meant?””

“No. Whenever I asked, she said I was too frightened to understand.””

Daniel folded the letter.

“Then we're going to find out.””

A faint sound came from the staircase.

They both looked up.

Evelyn stood halfway down, one hand resting on the banister.

“You really shouldn't have opened that envelope,” she said.

Daniel rose slowly.

“What's in the original records, Mom?””

Evelyn descended another step.

“Nothing that concerns you.””

“It's about my daughter. It concerns me.””

Her gaze shifted to Lauren.

“You were warned not to involve him.””

Lauren stood.

“You don't get to threaten me anymore.””

Evelyn's lips pressed together.

For a moment, the three of them stood in silence.

Then Evelyn smiled.

“You're both making a mistake. But if you insist on digging through the past, I suggest you begin at the hospital where Lily was born.””

Daniel felt a chill move down his spine.

“Why?””

His mother looked directly at him.

“Because the story you were told about that night isn't the whole story.””

She turned and continued downstairs.

Daniel stepped into her path.

“Tell me what happened.””

Evelyn lifted her chin.

“No.””

“Mom—”

“You want the truth? Find it yourself.””

She walked past him toward the kitchen.

Daniel watched her go, his hands curling into fists.

Then Lauren whispered the question that neither of them had dared to ask.

“Daniel, what if she isn't just trying to take Lily away from us?””

He looked at the letter in his hand.

“What else could she want?””

May you like

Lauren stared at the staircase.

“What if she's trying to stop us from discovering who Lily really is?””
