Chapter 3: When The Money Stops

By Monday morning, my phone was exploding.

My mother called first.

Then my father.

Then Claire.

Then my mother again.

I ignored all of them.

For once, I wasn’t rushing to fix the problem.

Because I wasn’t the person who created it.

At lunch, my father finally reached me.

“We need to talk.””

I leaned against my office window.

“About what?””

“You know exactly what.””

I waited.

Then he sighed.

“Your sister says you’re punishing everyone.””

I laughed quietly.

“Everyone?””

“She says you’re taking away the vacation because you’re angry.””

“I canceled a vacation Claire treated like her personal reward.””

My father became silent.

Then he said:

“You’re family.””

I closed my eyes.

That phrase.

Family.

People used it whenever they wanted something from me.

“She attacked my wife.””

“She made a mistake.””

“No.””

My voice became cold.

“She made a choice.””

That evening, my parents came over.

My mother looked tired.

My father looked disappointed.

Neither looked sorry.

Emma sat beside me.

My mother reached for her hand.

“Claire feels terrible.””

Emma looked at her.

“She hasn’t apologized.””

My mother opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Exactly.

My father sighed.

“She’s embarrassed.””

I looked at him.

“She should be.””

My mother frowned.

“You’re being cruel.””

I stared at her.

“Cruel?””

The room went quiet.

“I paid for my sister’s car because she said she needed help. I paid for renovations because you said you were struggling. I paid for this vacation because I wanted everyone together.””

I looked at each of them.

“And when Claire hurt my wife, nobody defended her.””

My mother looked down.

That was the answer.

The next day, Claire posted online.

A vague message.

“Crazy how people forget everything you’ve done for them when they get married.””

Within an hour, relatives were messaging me.

Apparently, Claire had created a story where she was the victim.

So I did something I had never done.

I told the truth.

I posted the payment records.

Not private details.

Just enough.

The car.

The vacation.

The apartment assistance.

The family members who had benefited from my generosity suddenly went quiet.

Claire called me immediately.

“You embarrassed me.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“I embarrassed you?””

“Yes!””

She was crying now.

“You made me look bad.””

I looked at the phone.

“You did that yourself.””

“You’re my brother.””

“And you’re my sister.””

A pause.

“Then why are you treating me like this?””

I answered honestly.

“Because I finally started treating you the way you treated me.””

She went silent.

Then she whispered:

“You’re really done helping me?””

I looked toward Emma, who was sleeping peacefully on the couch.

My answer was simple.

“Yes.””

But I didn’t know yet that Claire had one last card to play.

Because the next morning, I received a message from someone I never expected.

Someone who knew a secret about Claire.

A secret that could destroy everything she had built.
