Chapter 4: The Secret Behind The Smile

The message came from Claire’s best friend, Megan.

I almost deleted it.

Almost.

The first line stopped me.

“I know what Claire did. You deserve to know.””

I read the entire message twice.

Then I handed my phone to Emma.

She read silently.

Her expression changed.

“What?””

I swallowed.

“Megan says Claire wasn’t angry about the vacation.””

Emma looked up.

“Then why did she do it?””

I stared at the message.

Because the truth was worse.

Claire was jealous.

Not of the baby.

Not of the vacation.

Of us.

Megan explained that Claire had been telling people for months that I would always choose her over my wife.

She believed she was the most important woman in my life.

And when Emma became pregnant, Claire felt replaced.

The glass of water wasn’t an accident.

It was a message.

Emma put the phone down.

“That’s disturbing.””

“Yes.””

That afternoon, Claire called.

Her voice was different.

Less angry.

More desperate.

“Can we talk?””

I almost refused.

But I agreed.

We met at a coffee shop.

Claire looked exhausted.

For the first time in years, she didn’t look confident.

“I know you hate me right now.””

“I don’t hate you.””

She looked surprised.

“I’m just disappointed.””

She looked down.

“I was jealous.””

The honesty caught me off guard.

“I hated that everyone was excited about your baby.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

She wiped her eyes.

“Because I felt like I was losing you.””

I shook my head.

“Claire, I was never yours to lose.””

She started crying.

“I know I messed up.””

“Yes.””

“I’m sorry.””

I waited.

Because an apology mattered.

But an apology without change meant nothing.

“I should never have done that to Emma.””

That was the first real thing she said.

I nodded.

“You should have apologized that night.””

“I was embarrassed.””

“You were embarrassed?””

She looked away.

“I didn’t know how to admit I was wrong.””

I sat back.

For a moment, I saw my little sister.

The child who used to follow me around.

But then I remembered my wife standing there soaked and humiliated.

“I need time.””

Claire nodded.

“I understand.””

But when I stood up to leave, she grabbed my arm.

“Please don’t tell Mom and Dad about the other thing.””

I stopped.

“The other thing?””

Her face went pale.

Too late.

She realized what she had done.

“What other thing, Claire?””

She released my arm.

“I…”

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

From Megan.

Attached was a photo.

A document.

A document with Claire’s name on it.

And when I opened it, I realized the water thrown at my wife wasn’t the biggest betrayal that night.
