Chapter 8: The Person Behind The Betrayal

The message came from an unknown number.

Normally, I would have ignored it.

But after everything with Claire, I had learned one thing.

Secrets rarely disappear.

They wait.

I stared at the screen.

“What does this mean?””

Claire looked terrified.

“I don’t know.””

Emma came over.

“What happened?””

I showed her the message.

Her expression changed.

“Who sent it?””

“That’s the problem.””

Nobody knew.

The number was hidden.

No name.

No profile.

Nothing.

Just a message.

“You don’t know the whole truth about what happened at that dinner.””

The timing was too perfect.

Almost intentional.

That night, after everyone left, Claire stayed behind.

“I think I know who it is.””

I looked at her.

“Who?””

She hesitated.

“My ex.””

I frowned.

“Daniel?””

Claire nodded.

Daniel was the man she had dated before.

The one who always encouraged her worst habits.

The one who convinced her that appearance mattered more than responsibility.

“What would he know?””

Claire looked uncomfortable.

“More than I wanted him to.””

That answer bothered me.

“Claire.””

She sighed.

“Before the dinner, Daniel and I had a fight.””

“About what?””

She looked down.

“He told me I was pathetic because I needed you.””

I said nothing.

“He said you didn’t respect me.””

Emma crossed her arms.

“So he convinced you to prove something?””

Claire nodded slowly.

“I wanted to show him I wasn’t dependent on you.””

My stomach tightened.

“So you attacked Emma?””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“I know how horrible that sounds.””

“It sounds exactly like what happened.””

She looked away.

“I’m not saying it’s his fault.””

Good.

Because for the first time, she wasn’t looking for someone else to blame.

“But I think he wanted me to fail.””

The next day, Daniel appeared.

At my office.

Uninvited.

I looked up from my desk.

“What are you doing here?””

He smiled.

“Relax. I just wanted to talk.””

I stood.

“We have nothing to discuss.””

He laughed.

“That’s funny.””

“Why?””

“Because you’re acting like you’re the victim.””

My expression changed.

“Excuse me?””

Daniel leaned against the door.

“Your family always made Claire feel small.””

I stared at him.

“You barely know my family.””

“Oh, I know enough.””

That angered me.

“You manipulated her.””

He smiled.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“You think you’re the hero.””

I walked toward him.

“No.””

I pointed toward the door.

“I think I’m the person who protected my wife when everyone else laughed.””

His smile disappeared.

For the first time, he looked uncomfortable.

“You really think Emma is innocent?””

I froze.

“What does that mean?””

He reached into his pocket.

Pulled out his phone.

“I have proof.””

My heart started racing.

“What proof?””

He showed me a video.

A video from the dinner.

I watched.

And immediately noticed something.

The angle.

Someone had been recording.

Someone had known something was going to happen.

Daniel looked at me.

“Interesting, right?””

I watched the footage.

Claire holding the glass.

The table laughing.

My wife standing there.

Then something I had never seen before.

Right before Claire threw the water…

Someone whispered something into her ear.

Someone sitting beside her.

Someone I never suspected.

I paused the video.

“Zoom in.””

Daniel smiled.

“I knew you’d notice.””

The image became clearer.

And my heart dropped.

Because the person who whispered to Claire wasn’t Daniel.

May you like

It wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone from my own family.
