Chapter 2: The Signature That Wasn't Mine
Daniel didn't move for several seconds.
His eyes remained fixed on the document.
Then he carefully stood and turned toward Vanessa.
"What is this?""
Vanessa swallowed.
"Business paperwork.""
Daniel picked it up.
"Why is my name on it?""
"It's just a property authorization. Richard needed help managing some things.""
Daniel scanned the first page.
His jaw tightened.
"Mom, did you sign this?""
I shook my head.
"No, sweetheart.""
Richard struck his cane against the floor.
Daniel immediately looked toward him.
"Dad?""
Richard raised one trembling hand and pointed at the document.
Then he pointed at Vanessa.
His lips moved.
"She... took...""
Vanessa interrupted.
"Richard is confused. You know how his condition affects him.""
Daniel slowly turned toward her.
"My father's stroke affected his speech. It didn't erase his intelligence.""
He looked at the document again.
The first page was a power-of-attorney authorization. The second transferred significant property-management rights to a company called Reed Family Holdings.
Daniel read the company name twice.
"Reed Family Holdings?""
Vanessa folded her arms.
"It's a family investment company.""
"Your family?""
"Yes.""
"And why would my father transfer management of his assets to it?""
"Because someone has to take responsibility. You live hundreds of miles away. Your mother can't manage everything.""
Daniel placed the document on the table.
"Then why didn't you discuss it with me?""
Vanessa's expression changed.
For a moment, her beautiful smile disappeared.
"Because you're always busy. I was trying to help.""
Daniel looked at the metal bowl on the floor.
Then at the chain.
"Is this how you help?""
Vanessa sighed dramatically.
"Oh, please. She was being difficult. I asked her to calm down, and she started acting like I was abusing her.""
I reached for Daniel's hand.
"Son, please.""
He turned toward me immediately.
"What is it, Mom?""
I hesitated.
I was afraid.
That fear had become so familiar that even with my son standing beside me, I couldn't shake it.
"She told me you wouldn't believe me.""
Daniel's face changed.
"She told you that?""
I nodded.
"She said you would believe her because you were going to marry her.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
For the first time since entering the room, he looked as though someone had physically struck him.
He knelt again.
"Mom, listen to me. I don't care what she told you. I believe you.""
Vanessa laughed.
"Daniel, don't be ridiculous. You're making a scene over nothing.""
He stood.
"Nothing?""
He pointed toward the wet floor.
"She's sitting in a puddle of water with a chain around her ankle.""
"She wasn't hurt!""
"That is your defense?""
"I never hit her!""
Daniel's voice rose.
"You don't get credit for not hitting someone while you're humiliating them.""
Richard struggled to move his wheelchair.
Daniel noticed and hurried toward him.
"Dad, stay there. I'll help you.""
He checked his father's position, then carefully moved the cane within reach.
Richard grabbed his son's wrist.
His eyes were wet.
"Daniel...""
"I'm here, Dad.""
Richard looked toward me.
Then he pointed toward Vanessa.
"Lock... door.""
Daniel frowned.
"What do you mean?""
Richard tried again.
"She... locked...""
I understood.
"Daniel, she changed the locks. She wouldn't let me leave the house.""
Vanessa snapped.
"That is a lie!""
Daniel took out his phone.
"Then you won't mind explaining it to the police.""
Vanessa's face went pale.
"You're calling the police on me?""
"I'm calling emergency services for my parents.""
She stepped toward him.
"Daniel, think about what you're doing. We are supposed to get married in three weeks.""
He stared at her.
"Not anymore.""
The words seemed to empty the room of air.
Vanessa shook her head.
"You can't cancel our wedding because of a misunderstanding.""
"A misunderstanding?""
He looked at me.
Then at Richard.
"Do you think my parents are props in your little performance?""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
But they were not the frightened tears of someone who had been caught doing something wrong.
They were angry tears.
"You have no idea what I've sacrificed for you.""
Daniel didn't answer.
He dialed the emergency number.
While he spoke, I noticed Vanessa's eyes moving around the room.
She looked at the hallway.
Then the kitchen.
Then the front entrance.
She was calculating something.
I recognized that expression.
It was the same look she'd worn whenever she wanted to make sure nobody was watching before she spoke cruelly to me.
When Daniel finished the call, he returned to my side.
"Let's get you somewhere comfortable.""
He carefully examined the restraint without pulling on my ankle.
"Does it hurt?""
"No, sweetheart.""
"Can you stand?""
I tried.
My knees trembled.
Daniel immediately supported me.
"Take your time.""
He helped me into a chair, wrapped his jacket more securely around my shoulders, and asked Richard whether he needed anything.
Richard shook his head.
Then he pointed toward Daniel's phone.
Daniel looked at him.
"What is it, Dad?""
Richard gestured toward the hallway.
"Camera.""
Daniel's expression sharpened.
"What camera?""
I remembered.
Six months earlier, Richard had installed security cameras throughout the property after a package disappeared from the porch.
Vanessa had claimed the system was malfunctioning.
She told us she had disconnected it.
But Richard had never trusted her explanation.
He had quietly asked the technician to preserve the recordings on a separate account.
Daniel immediately opened his phone.
He had the security application installed because he had helped his father set it up years earlier.
"Let's see if it still works.""
Vanessa moved toward him.
"Daniel, don't.""
He raised one hand.
"Stay where you are.""
The application loaded.
A series of camera feeds appeared.
The dining room.
The hallway.
The kitchen.
The front entrance.
Daniel tapped the dining-room recording.
A video from earlier that evening began playing.
There was Vanessa, carrying the metal bowl.
There was me, standing near the table.
And there was Richard, trying to intervene.
The recording showed Vanessa grabbing my arm and forcing me toward the floor.
Daniel's mouth tightened.
He continued watching.
The camera captured the pasta dropping into the bowl.
It captured Vanessa smiling.
It captured the water being poured over my head.
And then it captured something that made Daniel stop breathing for a moment.
Vanessa walked toward Richard.
She leaned down beside his wheelchair.
Her lips moved.
The recording had no audio, but her expression was unmistakable.
She was threatening him.
Daniel rewound the footage.
Then he opened another recording.
The camera in the hallway had captured the conversation clearly enough to show what happened afterward.
Vanessa stood outside Richard's bedroom, holding a folder.
"Sign it tomorrow," she said.
"If you don't, I'll tell Daniel you've been having memory problems. He'll put you somewhere you don't want to be.""
Richard shook his head.
Vanessa slammed the folder against the wall.
"You're making this very difficult.""
Daniel's hand tightened around his phone.
"How long has this been happening?""
I looked down.
"Months.""
He turned toward me.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
I started crying.
"Because she said she'd make you choose.""
Daniel knelt and took both my hands.
"Mom, you never have to protect me from the truth.""
Vanessa suddenly grabbed her handbag.
"I'm leaving.""
Daniel stood immediately.
"The police are on their way. You're not going to interfere with anything here.""
"You can't keep me prisoner!""
"I'm not touching you. I'm asking you to stay until the officers arrive.""
She pointed a manicured finger at him.
"You'll regret this.""
He didn't respond.
Instead, he checked the camera application again.
A notification appeared.
*Motion detected: Study room.*
Daniel opened the recording.
At first, the room appeared empty.
Then he saw Vanessa entering the study.
She walked straight to Richard's desk, opened the bottom drawer, and removed a thick envelope.
Daniel looked toward her.
"What did you take?""
Vanessa froze.
"Nothing.""
He turned his phone toward her.
The video continued.
She placed the envelope inside her handbag.
Daniel's voice became dangerously calm.
"Put it back.""
Vanessa stared at him.
Then she slowly opened her bag.
Inside was the envelope.
And on its front, in Richard's handwriting, were three words:
*Daniel's inheritance documents.*
But when Daniel opened the envelope, he discovered something far worse than a stolen document.

His father's handwritten note began with a sentence that made his face turn white.
If anything happens to me, do not trust the woman you are about to marry.
