Chapter 5: The House That Was Never Hers
Daniel didn't sleep that night.
Neither did I.
At six in the morning, he was already on the phone with his former law partner, explaining the documents, the transfers, and the attempted property loan.
I sat beside Richard's hospital bed, holding his hand.
He was awake but tired.
When Daniel finally ended the call, he walked over to us.
"I've spoken to someone who specializes in financial exploitation and property fraud.""
Richard looked at him.
"Good?""
"Yes, Dad. We're going to challenge everything.""
I squeezed my husband's hand.
"What about our house?""
Daniel pulled up a chair.
"First, we're going to establish exactly what happened. Nobody is taking anything from you without a legal fight.""
Richard nodded.
Then he pointed toward the envelope.
Daniel handed it to him.
Richard flipped through the papers and stopped at a small folded document tucked behind the property deed.
He handed it to Daniel.
Daniel unfolded it.
It was a letter from a woman named Margaret Ellis.
I recognized the handwriting immediately.
"That's Margaret's writing.""
Daniel looked up.
"Who is Margaret?""
"Your father's former accountant. She worked with us for nearly twenty years.""
Richard nodded.
"Trusted... friend.""
The letter was dated four months earlier.
It read:
Richard, I reviewed the transfers you asked me to investigate. The payments to Reed Family Holdings are not consistent with ordinary household expenses. I also found a loan application connected to your second property. I strongly recommend that you contact an independent attorney before signing anything else.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
Please don't confront Vanessa until you have secured the original records.
Daniel read it twice.
"Did Margaret know about this?""
Richard nodded.
"Help... records.""
I felt a small spark of hope.
"Where is she now?""
Daniel checked the letter.
There was a phone number.
He called immediately.
A woman answered after the third ring.
"Hello?""
"Margaret? This is Daniel Carter.""
Silence.
Then a sharp breath.
"Daniel? Oh, thank goodness.""
Daniel looked at me.
"You know what's happening?""
"I've been trying to reach your father for weeks. Vanessa told me he had been moved to a care facility.""
Richard closed his eyes.
Margaret continued.
"I knew something was wrong. I sent letters. Nobody answered.""
Daniel's voice tightened.
"Can you come to the hospital?""
"Yes. But Daniel, there's something you need to know.""
"What?""
"Your father didn't simply ask me to investigate the money.""
Daniel waited.
"He asked me to find out whether Vanessa was working with someone.""
Daniel looked at the documents.
"Who?""
Margaret hesitated.
"Her father.""
Margaret arrived two hours later.
She was in her early sixties, with silver-streaked hair and a brown leather folder tucked beneath her arm.
She greeted Richard warmly.
"Oh, Richard. I'm so sorry.""
He squeezed her hand.
She turned to me.
"Evelyn, you look exhausted.""
I tried to smile.
"I've had better weeks.""
Margaret sat down and opened her folder.
"I brought copies of everything I found.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Tell us.""
She placed several documents on the table.
"Reed Family Holdings was established by Vanessa's father, Thomas Reed. The company had been losing money for years. It was facing substantial debts.""
Daniel studied the figures.
"How substantial?""
"Enough to put several properties at risk.""
She turned another page.
"Vanessa began approaching your father shortly after his stroke. She offered to manage certain household expenses. At first, the transfers were small.""
Daniel examined the bank statements.
"Then they increased.""
"Exactly. She was using the money to support her father's company.""
I covered my mouth.
"Why would she do that?""
Margaret looked at me.
"Because the company was close to collapse. And she believed your family had enough assets to keep it alive.""
Daniel picked up a document.
"This loan application...""
Margaret nodded.
"I believe it was submitted using a forged signature.""
"Can you prove it?""
"I can show you the original signature samples and the documents submitted to the lender. A forensic examiner will need to compare them.""
Daniel looked toward his father.
"Dad, did you know about the company?""
Richard nodded.
"Found... transfers.""
"When?""
"January.""
Daniel leaned closer.
"And what did you do?""
Richard pointed toward the notebook.
"Recorded.""
Margaret opened the notebook to a marked page.
"Richard also discovered something else. Vanessa had been telling people that he was no longer mentally capable of making financial decisions.""
Daniel frowned.
"She was trying to establish that he couldn't manage his own affairs.""
"Yes. And she had contacted a private care facility about moving him there.""
I looked toward Richard.
"She told me it was just a temporary arrangement.""
Margaret nodded sadly.
"She wanted both of you separated. It would have made controlling the finances much easier.""
Daniel's jaw tightened.
He looked at the hospital floor for several seconds.
Then he asked the question none of us had considered.
"Why did she choose our family?""
Margaret closed the folder.
"Because of your father.""
Richard looked up.
Margaret continued.
"Years ago, Thomas Reed worked for a construction company that went into bankruptcy. Richard helped purchase some of its remaining assets. Thomas believed he had been cheated out of a business opportunity.""
Richard shook his head.
"Not true.""
Margaret nodded.
"I know. Your father paid what the contracts required. But Thomas never accepted it.""
Daniel leaned back.
"So this was revenge?""
"Possibly. But I think there was more to it.""
She took out another document.
It was an email printed on white paper.
The sender was Thomas Reed.
The recipient was Vanessa.
The subject line read:
*Carter Property Strategy.*
Daniel began reading.
The email discussed the possibility of gaining control of the Carter family's assets through a combination of property-management agreements, loans, and medical authorizations.
One sentence was underlined.
Once the old man is removed from decision-making, the rest should be straightforward.
Daniel looked up.
"Removed?""
Margaret nodded.
"That is why I was concerned.""
Richard's face tightened.
I reached for his hand.
"Richard?""
He looked at me.
His eyes were frightened.
Then he slowly tapped the table.
Once.
Twice.
He pointed toward the email.
Then toward himself.
Daniel understood.
"Are you saying they wanted you out of the way?""
Richard nodded.
The room fell silent.
I felt cold.
Vanessa hadn't simply been cruel because she disliked me.
She had been following a plan.
A plan that involved my husband's vulnerability, our home, and our savings.
Daniel stood and walked to the window.
For several moments, he stared outside.
Then his phone rang.
The caller ID displayed Vanessa's name.
He answered.
"What?""
Her voice was soft.
"Daniel, can we talk?""
"No.""
"Please. I haven't slept.""
"That's not my problem.""
She began crying.
"I made mistakes.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"You made choices.""
"I was under pressure.""
"Your mother was on the floor.""
"Daniel—"
"My mother.""
Silence.
Then Vanessa whispered, "I can explain everything.""
"You've had months to explain.""
"I want to see you.""
Daniel glanced at Richard and me.
"There's nothing I need to hear from you.""
Vanessa's voice suddenly became sharp.
"Then perhaps you should hear from your father.""
Daniel frowned.
"What about him?""
"He knows what happened to your grandfather's estate.""
Richard went completely still.
Margaret slowly looked up.
Daniel's voice dropped.
"What are you talking about?""
Vanessa laughed softly.
"You think your family has been honest with you? Ask Richard why the original Carter inheritance disappeared.""
Daniel stared at his father.
"Dad?""
Richard's face had turned pale.
He reached for his cane.
Vanessa continued.
"Ask him why your grandfather left everything to your mother, and why she never received it.""
Daniel's hand tightened around the phone.
"Where are you getting this information?""
"From documents your father has been hiding.""
She paused.
Then delivered the sentence that changed everything.
"Your mother isn't the only person in this family who was cheated out of an inheritance.""
The call ended.
Daniel lowered his phone.
Margaret closed her folder slowly.
I looked at my husband.
"Richard, what is she talking about?""
He stared at the floor.
Then he reached for the small black notebook.
His fingers trembled as he turned to a page near the back.
There was an old photograph tucked inside.
A young Richard stood beside another man.
Behind them was a large brick house.
May you like
On the back, someone had written:
The day we buried the truth.
