Chapter 8: The Family Secret in the Ledger
Samuel looked older than the man in the photograph.
His silver hair was neatly combed, his dark coat was expensive, and his face carried the confident expression of someone who believed every room belonged to him.
Thomas Reed stood beside him.
He was shorter, with a broad frame and a carefully trimmed gray beard.
Daniel recognized him immediately.
Vanessa's father.
Patricia stepped toward the entrance.
"Who are you?""
Samuel ignored her.
He looked directly at Daniel.
"My son.""
Daniel didn't move.
"Don't call me that.""
Samuel's expression tightened.
"I understand you're angry.""
"You disappeared for almost forty years.""
"I had reasons.""
"You left a baby with my father.""
Samuel glanced at the ledger.
"And Richard made sure you never knew the truth.""
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"You're right. He gave me a home, a family, an education, and every birthday I ever had. Terrible man.""
Samuel looked away.
Thomas Reed stepped forward.
"Let's not turn this into an emotional argument. We have business to discuss.""
Patricia immediately interrupted.
"Any discussion involving property or estate claims should take place through legal counsel.""
Thomas smiled.
"Of course. But we're all family here.""
Daniel stared at him.
"You raised a daughter who tried to steal my mother's house.""
Thomas's smile disappeared.
"Vanessa made mistakes.""
"She restrained my mother and humiliated her.""
"That's between you and Vanessa.""
"No. Your company is connected to the fraudulent property documents.""
Thomas adjusted his coat.
"Those documents are legitimate.""
Daniel lifted the ledger.
"Then you won't mind explaining these.""
Thomas's eyes moved to the book.
For the first time, he looked nervous.
Samuel stepped forward.
"Give me that.""
Daniel held it closer to his chest.
"No.""
Samuel's voice hardened.
"That book belongs to the Carter family.""
"And apparently you spent years stealing from it.""
Samuel's face reddened.
"You have no idea what happened.""
"Then explain.""
Samuel looked toward Thomas.
Thomas gave him a small nod.
Then Samuel began speaking.
"My father trusted me with the estate. I managed everything while Richard was busy building his business.""
Daniel shook his head.
"The documents say you transferred money without authorization.""
"Your grandfather was old. He didn't understand how much money was required to maintain those properties.""
"That doesn't explain the missing funds.""
Samuel looked at him.
"Your grandfather made promises to both of us.""
Daniel opened the ledger.
"Then why did you sign the settlement agreement?""
Samuel's expression changed.
"I was forced.""
"By whom?""
Samuel glanced at Thomas again.
Patricia noticed.
"Mr. Reed, why are you involved in a private family estate?""
Thomas ignored her.
Samuel took a breath.
"Richard threatened to expose me. He told everyone I was stealing.""
Daniel looked at the ledger.
"Because you were.""
Samuel stepped closer.
"You've been listening to one side of the story.""
Daniel pointed toward the photograph.
"And what side is this?""
Samuel glanced at it.
His face turned pale.
Thomas immediately reached for the photograph.
Patricia stepped between them.
"Don't touch the evidence.""
Samuel stopped.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Daniel asked the question that had been bothering him since the hospital.
"Why did you contact me now?""
Samuel looked at him.
"Because you're entitled to your inheritance.""
Daniel laughed without humor.
"Convenient timing.""
"I'm your father.""
"No. Richard is my father.""
Samuel's jaw tightened.
"Biologically, I'm the one who gave you life.""
"And Richard is the one who stayed.""
Samuel looked as though he had been slapped.
Then Thomas interrupted.
"We're wasting time. The property transaction is scheduled for tomorrow. We need Daniel's cooperation.""
Daniel turned toward him.
"What transaction?""
Thomas pulled a document from his briefcase.
"An agreement to consolidate the remaining estate properties under one management company.""
"Your company.""
"Yes.""
"And who benefits?""
"Everyone.""
Daniel scanned the document.
It included the Lake Michigan property, the old Carter house, and several commercial buildings.
The agreement claimed to have approval from the estate's beneficiaries.
But one signature was missing.
Daniel's.
He looked at Samuel.
"Why do you need me?""
Samuel hesitated.
"Because the trust requires your approval.""
Daniel slowly understood.
They hadn't come to reconnect with him.
They needed his signature.
His biological relationship to Samuel gave them access to a claim they couldn't complete without him.
Thomas spoke smoothly.
"If you sign, we can resolve everything. Your mother keeps her home. Richard receives financial security. You receive your inheritance.""
Daniel placed the document on the desk.
"And what happens to the properties?""
"They become part of a professionally managed portfolio.""
"Controlled by Reed Family Holdings.""
"Correct.""
Daniel looked at Patricia.
She shook her head almost imperceptibly.
He turned back toward the two men.
"No.""
Thomas's expression hardened.
"You should think carefully.""
"I have.""
Samuel stepped closer.
"Daniel, listen. I know I made mistakes. But I am your father. I want to make things right.""
Daniel stared at him.
"Then tell me the truth about why you disappeared.""
Samuel's eyes moved toward the basement stairs.
Then he looked back.
"I had financial problems.""
"That's not an answer.""
"I was being investigated.""
"For what?""
Samuel swallowed.
"Fraud.""
Daniel's grip tightened on the ledger.
"By whom?""
"Your grandfather.""
Daniel looked at the old letter.
Samuel continued.
"Your grandfather wanted to take everything away from me. Thomas offered to help.""
Thomas snapped.
"Samuel, stop.""
But Samuel was already speaking.
"He said we could move the properties through another company. He said nobody would notice.""
Daniel looked at Thomas.
"So you helped him.""
Thomas raised his voice.
"That was decades ago!""
Patricia stepped forward.
"Are you admitting to participating in unauthorized property transfers?""
Thomas immediately shut his mouth.
Daniel turned toward Samuel.
"And Richard?""
Samuel's eyes lowered.
"He discovered what we'd done.""
"So he paid the debts.""
Samuel nodded.
Daniel shook his head.
"You let him take responsibility for your actions while you disappeared.""
"I had no choice.""
"You always had a choice.""
Samuel's face twisted.
Then he delivered the sentence that revealed just how little he understood.
"I gave Richard the chance to raise you. He should be grateful.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Don't you dare.""
Samuel raised his hands.
"I mean it. I could have taken you with me.""
"But you didn't.""
"I was protecting you.""
"No. You were protecting yourself.""
Thomas closed his briefcase.
"This conversation is over.""
He turned toward the investigators.
"Tell your employer we'll proceed with the transaction.""
Patricia blocked his path.
"There will be no transaction until the ownership dispute is resolved.""
Thomas smiled coldly.
"You should check your facts.""
He pulled out his phone and showed her an email.
The subject line read:
*FINAL APPROVAL CONFIRMED.*
Daniel frowned.
"Who approved it?""
Thomas turned the screen.
A scanned document appeared.
The signature at the bottom was Richard Carter's.
Daniel stared.
"That's impossible.""
Thomas smiled.
"Your father signed it yesterday.""
Daniel looked toward Patricia.
She immediately examined the document.
"Mr. Reed, this signature will need independent verification.""
Thomas shrugged.
"Do whatever you want.""
Then he and Samuel left.
Daniel stood in the basement holding the ledger.
His phone vibrated.
It was a message from the hospital.
The nurse had called.
Richard had experienced a sudden medical complication.
Daniel immediately called back.
"What's happening?""
The nurse answered.
"Your father is conscious, but there's something you need to know.""
"What?""
"We found a visitor in his room shortly before his blood pressure increased.""
Daniel's stomach tightened.
"Who?""
The nurse hesitated.
Then she said a name.
"Vanessa Reed.""
Daniel drove to the hospital with Patricia.
When they arrived, Officer Brooks was already standing outside Richard's room.
"Mr. Carter, we need to speak.""
Daniel hurried inside.
Richard was awake.
His face was pale, but he reached for his son's hand.
"Daniel...""
"I'm here, Dad.""
Daniel looked toward the nurse.
"What happened?""
"Vanessa came in claiming she had permission to visit. She spoke with your father for several minutes. After she left, his blood pressure rose sharply.""
Richard shook his head.
"Threat...""
Daniel leaned closer.
"What did she threaten you with?""
Richard looked toward the bedside cabinet.
There was a small folded paper.
Daniel opened it.
The message contained only one sentence.
Sign the estate documents, or Evelyn will lose everything.
Daniel's face hardened.
He looked toward Officer Brooks.
"I want this documented.""
She nodded.
"We've already started.""
Then Richard grabbed Daniel's wrist.
He struggled to speak.
"Not... Vanessa.""
Daniel frowned.
"What?""
Richard pointed toward the paper.
Then toward the ledger.
"Samuel... not alone.""
Daniel looked at his father.
Richard's eyes filled with fear.
He whispered the final words with great effort.
"Someone... inside.""
Daniel went still.
Someone inside.
Someone who knew where the documents were.
Someone who knew about the hospital visit.
Someone who had access to our home, our records, and our family.
Daniel slowly turned toward Patricia.
She was staring at the folded paper.
Then she noticed something on the back.
A small handwritten number.
An extension number.
Patricia recognized it immediately.
May you like
It belonged to the office of the attorney who had originally prepared the estate documents.
And that attorney had been dead for eleven years.
