Chapter 4: The Recording That Changed Everything

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The recording continued playing.

My voice filled the dining room again.

"Richard, please wake up. I didn't mean to...""

Then came a crash.

A chair scraping against the floor.

My frightened breathing.

And Vanessa's voice.

"Don't touch him, Evelyn! Step away!""

Daniel stared at the phone.

Then he looked at me.

"Mom, what happened that night?""

I tried to speak, but my throat felt as though someone had closed a hand around it.

Vanessa folded her arms.

"Go ahead, Evelyn. Tell him.""

Daniel picked up the phone.

"Where did you get this?""

Vanessa tilted her head.

"I told you. I have a recording.""

"That's not what I asked.""

She sighed.

"Your father fell. Your mother was standing over him. She was screaming. I recorded everything because I knew nobody would believe me otherwise.""

Daniel replayed the audio.

This time, he listened more carefully.

The recording contained my voice, Richard's faint groaning, and the sound of something breaking.

Then came Vanessa's voice again.

"Don't move him! You could make it worse!""

I remembered that night.

Every detail.

The smell of burnt toast in the kitchen.

The television playing quietly.

Richard standing near the staircase, holding the railing.

He had been trying to walk without his cane.

I had asked him to wait until I could help.

But he had insisted he could manage.

Then his knees buckled.

I caught his arm, but his weight pulled us both down.

His head struck the edge of a small table.

I screamed.

Vanessa appeared seconds later.

She had been staying upstairs.

She looked at Richard, then at me.

"What did you do?""

"I didn't do anything! He fell!""

She grabbed my shoulders.

"Don't touch him!""

I had been too frightened to understand why she was behaving that way.

She called the ambulance.

But before the paramedics arrived, she took my phone and told me not to speak to anyone.

Later, she said the hospital staff had questioned her.

She told me they suspected I had pushed Richard.

I had spent months believing that one terrible accident might somehow be used against me.

Now Daniel was listening to the same recording Vanessa had used to frighten me.

"Mom?""

His voice brought me back.

"I didn't push him, sweetheart.""

Daniel immediately reached for my hand.

"I know.""

Vanessa laughed.

"How convenient.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Play the entire recording.""

Her smile disappeared.

"What?""

"The entire recording. Not the thirty seconds you've selected.""

"It's all there.""

"Then you won't mind.""

Vanessa snatched the phone.

"You're twisting everything!""

Daniel stood.

"Give me the phone.""

She backed away.

"No.""

He didn't chase her.

He simply looked toward the front entrance.

"Officer, they're here.""

Two police officers entered the dining room.

One was a tall Black woman with short natural hair. The other was a middle-aged man carrying a small notebook.

The woman introduced herself as Officer Brooks.

"Who called?""

Daniel raised his hand.

"I did. My mother and father are the victims. I have video evidence of what happened tonight, and we've discovered documents suggesting financial exploitation.""

Officer Brooks looked around the room.

Her eyes stopped at the wet floor, the metal bowl, and the loose chain near my ankle.

Then she approached me.

"Ma'am, are you hurt?""

I shook my head.

"I'm frightened.""

She crouched beside me.

"That's understandable. You're safe right now. Can you tell me what happened?""

Vanessa interrupted.

"This is a family misunderstanding. Nobody needs to make a big deal out of it.""

Officer Brooks turned.

"Ma'am, I'll speak with you in a moment.""

"But I'm his fiancée.""

"That doesn't change the situation.""

Daniel handed over his phone.

"I have the original security footage.""

Officer Brooks reviewed the recording of Vanessa pouring water over my head.

She watched the footage twice.

Then she looked at the chain.

"Who installed this?""

Vanessa answered quickly.

"It was there for safety.""

Officer Brooks raised an eyebrow.

"Safety for whom?""

Nobody answered.

The second officer began photographing the dining room.

Daniel showed them the documents from the envelope.

Officer Brooks examined the property-transfer application.

"Mrs. Carter, did you authorize this signature?""

I shook my head.

"No. I've never seen that paper.""

"Did you give anyone permission to transfer your property?""

"No.""

She wrote something in her notebook.

Then she looked at Daniel.

"We'll need to preserve all original records and determine whether any financial crimes have occurred. Don't delete anything from those devices.""

Vanessa suddenly became emotional.

"Officer, you need to understand that I've been taking care of these people. Daniel is never here. I have been doing everything.""

Officer Brooks remained calm.

"Then the evidence will help establish what happened.""

Vanessa turned toward Daniel.

"Tell them! Tell them I'm the woman you love!""

Daniel looked at her for a long moment.

Then he removed his engagement ring from his pocket.

He had taken it off during the flight home.

He placed it on the dining table.

"I don't love someone who treats my mother like this.""

Vanessa stared at the ring.

"You can't be serious.""

"The wedding is over.""

Her mouth opened.

No words came out.

Then she pointed at me.

"This is because of her!""

Daniel stepped forward.

"No. This is because of you.""

Officer Brooks asked Vanessa to remain in the living room while they continued their investigation.

She protested, but the officers maintained control of the situation.

Meanwhile, Daniel helped Richard into a more comfortable position.

A paramedic arrived to assess him.

Richard refused to let go of his son's hand.

"Daniel...""

"I'm here, Dad.""

"Mother... safe?""

Daniel looked at me.

"She's safe.""

Richard closed his eyes.

His shoulders relaxed.

For the first time that evening, he seemed able to breathe.

An hour later, Daniel sat beside me in the hospital waiting room.

The doctors had examined Richard and confirmed that he was stable. They wanted to monitor his blood pressure and review his medication.

I wore a borrowed hospital blanket.

Daniel had gone to a nearby shop to buy me dry clothes.

When he returned, he placed a paper bag beside me.

"Mom, I got your favorite sweater.""

I touched the fabric.

It was the blue one he had given me on Mother's Day years earlier.

I began crying.

Daniel sat beside me.

"I'm sorry.""

I looked at him.

"For what?""

"For being away. For not seeing what was happening.""

I shook my head.

"You had your life.""

"That doesn't excuse me from being your son.""

He took my hand.

Then he asked quietly, "Why didn't you call me from someone else's phone?""

I looked down.

"She told me you had asked her to handle everything.""

Daniel frowned.

"What?""

"She said you were overwhelmed. She told me you wanted peace before the wedding. She said if I kept complaining, you might stop visiting.""

Daniel's expression changed.

"Mom, I never said that.""

"I know that now.""

He leaned forward.

"She lied about me.""

I nodded.

"She told your father the same things.""

Daniel looked toward the hospital room where Richard was resting.

Then his phone vibrated.

An unfamiliar number appeared.

He answered.

"Hello?""

A man's voice spoke.

"Mr. Carter? My name is Michael Grant. I'm an attorney representing Reed Family Holdings.""

Daniel stood.

"Why are you calling me?""

"We've been informed that there may be a dispute regarding certain property documents.""

"What property?""

There was a pause.

"Your parents' residence.""

Daniel looked at me.

"What about it?""

"The company has already submitted a claim based on an agreement signed by your mother.""

Daniel's face hardened.

"My mother never signed anything.""

"That is a serious allegation, sir.""

"Then you should be prepared to prove the signature is genuine.""

The attorney cleared his throat.

"There's another issue. The company believes your father authorized a loan secured against a separate property.""

Daniel went silent.

"Which property?""

"The residence near Lake Michigan.""

Daniel looked at the folder.

The same property his father had secretly purchased for me.

"Who signed the loan?""

The attorney hesitated.

Then he answered.

"According to the documents, your mother did.""

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

I watched his face.

"Son?""

He looked at me.

"They've already tried to take the house.""

And then his phone received a photograph.

It showed the front door of our home.

A red notice had been attached to it.

*PROPERTY ACCESS RESTRICTED PENDING LEGAL REVIEW.*

But the worst part wasn't the notice.

It was the date.

The paperwork had been filed two days before Vanessa poured water over my head.

May you like

She hadn't been planning to leave.

She had been planning to make sure we had nowhere else to go.
