Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Pink Dress

Daniel read the sentence twice.

Then he looked at his father.

"Dad, what is this?""

Richard's breathing became uneven.

He reached for Daniel's hand and squeezed it.

"Read... all.""

Daniel opened the envelope.

Inside were several bank statements, copies of property records, printed emails, and a small black notebook.

The documents were organized carefully.

Every page had a date.

Every transaction had a highlighted amount.

Richard had been keeping records.

For months.

Daniel sat beside him and began reading.

The first statement showed a transfer of $18,500 from a joint household account to Reed Family Holdings.

The next showed $32,000.

Then another transfer of $47,000.

Daniel turned another page.

His expression hardened.

"These transactions were never authorized.""

Vanessa folded her arms.

"Richard agreed to them.""

Daniel looked up.

"Show me where.""

"He gave me permission.""

"Then where is the signed authorization?""

Vanessa said nothing.

Daniel continued examining the documents.

The transfers had begun shortly after Richard's stroke.

The payments were labeled as household expenses, medical support, and property maintenance.

But the receiving company was not a medical provider or a contractor.

It belonged to Vanessa's family.

Daniel turned to the final page.

A photograph was clipped to it.

It showed Vanessa standing outside a bank with a man in a gray suit.

Daniel recognized him.

"Who is this?""

Vanessa's expression flickered.

"An accountant.""

"Whose accountant?""

"Mine.""

Daniel stared at her.

"Why were you meeting with him the day after my father was hospitalized?""

She lifted her chin.

"Because somebody had to handle the finances.""

Richard made a frustrated sound.

He tapped the notebook.

Daniel opened it.

The handwriting was uneven but recognizable.

His father's entries described conversations, dates, and specific incidents.

One entry read:

March 12. Vanessa asked me to sign the property transfer. I refused. She told Evelyn she could make Daniel believe we were incapable of managing our affairs.

Another:

March 19. Evelyn's phone disappeared. Vanessa said she had lost it. I saw her place it in her bedroom drawer.

Daniel stopped reading.

He looked at me.

"She took your phone?""

I nodded.

"She said I kept calling people who were trying to scam us.""

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

He looked exhausted.

But he continued.

The next page contained a handwritten account of an incident from two weeks earlier.

Vanessa threatened to place Evelyn in a nursing home if I did not sign the papers. She said she had already spoken to someone about making it happen.

Daniel slowly lowered the notebook.

"Mom, did she ever tell you she was arranging a nursing home?""

I nodded.

"She said I was becoming too much trouble.""

Daniel's eyes filled.

He turned toward Vanessa.

"How could you?""

She threw up her hands.

"Oh, here we go. I'm the villain because I tried to help two people who can't take care of themselves.""

Daniel stood.

"You stole from my parents.""

"I borrowed money.""

"Without permission.""

"They were going to leave everything to you anyway!""

Richard suddenly struck the floor with his cane.

Vanessa turned.

"Stop that!""

Daniel stepped between them.

"Don't speak to him.""

Vanessa looked at Daniel with disbelief.

"You're choosing them over me?""

He stared at her.

"They are my parents.""

"And I'm supposed to be your wife!""

"No.""

He shook his head.

"You were supposed to be the person I trusted most.""

For a moment, Vanessa seemed unable to find an answer.

Then she changed tactics.

She began crying.

Not quietly.

Loudly enough to fill the room.

"I gave up everything for you, Daniel. I moved into this house. I handled your father's appointments.

I cooked. I cleaned. I sacrificed my own life.""

Daniel looked at the untouched dinner table.

"You made my mother eat from a metal bowl.""

"She was being disrespectful!""

"You poured water over her head.""

"She was dirty!""

"You restrained her.""

Vanessa's voice rose.

"She wouldn't listen!""

Daniel stared at her.

"She's sixty-eight years old. She's my mother. What exactly did you think she owed you?""

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

Then her expression hardened again.

"You have no idea what your father did.""

Richard looked up.

Daniel frowned.

"What does that mean?""

Vanessa glanced toward the documents.

"Ask him why he kept all this money hidden. Ask him why he never told you about the second property.""

Daniel looked at his father.

"What second property?""

Richard lowered his eyes.

For the first time that evening, he looked embarrassed.

He reached into the notebook and turned to the last page.

A property address was written there.

Daniel read it.

His eyebrows drew together.

"This is the house near Lake Michigan.""

Richard nodded.

"Your... mother.""

I looked at him in confusion.

"Richard, what are you talking about?""

My husband looked toward me.

Then he pointed to the address.

Daniel understood first.

"Mom, Dad bought that property for you?""

Richard nodded again.

"Long... time.""

I stared at him.

For forty-three years, Richard had always told me that we couldn't afford a second home.

We had lived carefully, saved money, and avoided unnecessary expenses.

I had never suspected he owned another property.

Daniel turned the page.

There was a deed.

And beneath it was a handwritten instruction.

This property belongs to Evelyn Carter. It must never be transferred, sold, or used as collateral without her direct consent.

I looked at my husband.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Richard's eyes softened.

He struggled to speak.

"Surprise... retirement.""

I covered my mouth.

Tears spilled down my cheeks.

He had bought the house years earlier, intending to give it to me when we retired.

But before he could surprise me, he suffered his stroke.

Daniel smiled sadly.

"Dad, you really kept this secret for all these years?""

Richard gave a tiny nod.

Then Daniel examined the deed more closely.

His smile disappeared.

There was a second document attached.

A transfer application.

It appeared someone had attempted to use the property as collateral for a substantial loan.

The signature at the bottom was supposed to be mine.

But I had never seen the document.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

"Did you try to mortgage my mother's property?""

She didn't answer.

"Vanessa!""

She crossed her arms.

"It was an investment opportunity.""

"Using my mother's house?""

"It would have made money.""

"For whom?""

She looked away.

Daniel picked up the application.

The date was from three weeks earlier.

That was the same week she had told me I was becoming forgetful.

The same week she had taken my identification documents.

The same week Richard had tried to call Daniel.

Everything suddenly made sense.

Vanessa hadn't simply wanted control of our household.

She wanted the house.

The savings.

The retirement accounts.

And the second property.

She had been trying to turn our entire lives into her personal investment fund.

Then the doorbell rang.

Daniel checked his phone.

"That's the police.""

Vanessa stepped toward the hallway.

"Daniel, please. We can talk about this privately.""

He shook his head.

"There's nothing left to discuss.""

She moved closer, lowering her voice.

"You don't understand. Your father isn't telling you everything.""

Daniel paused.

"What else?""

Vanessa glanced at Richard.

Then she looked directly at me.

"Ask your mother what happened the night your father had his stroke.""

The room went silent.

My hands began trembling.

Daniel turned toward me.

"Mom?""

I couldn't answer.

Because there was something Vanessa knew that I had spent six months trying to forget.

It was the night Richard collapsed.

The night I had found him unconscious beside the staircase.

The night Vanessa had insisted on calling the ambulance herself.

And the night she had told the paramedics that Richard had fallen because I had pushed him.

Daniel's face drained of color.

"Mom, what is she talking about?""

I reached for his hand.

"Daniel, I didn't push your father.""

"I know.""

But Vanessa smiled.

She reached into her handbag and pulled out her phone.

Then she placed it on the table.

"I have a recording.""

Daniel stared at the device.

Vanessa pressed play.

A familiar voice filled the dining room.

My voice.

And the first sentence I heard made my blood run cold.

"Richard, please wake up. I didn't mean to...""

Daniel slowly turned toward me.

May you like

Vanessa's smile widened.

"Now," she whispered, "let's see whether your son still believes everything his mother says.""
